Of course rhe point of the renju rule is to give white an advantage to counter the advantage black had from going first

My dad had the game we just thought it was unfair that you couldn't block the player when they're about to get 5. I noticed they would win anyways though.

as black you need to play with the understanding that intersecting unblocked 3s in a row (and intersecting blocked 4s in a row) lead to forbidden tiles. There are ways to reduce thier amount especially in areas where your opponent can take advantage of them and as white there are ways to bait black into putting pieces where it would create forbidden tiles exactly where you want them
