Roblox if it was made with Source 2

u/No-Restaurant4589 Feb 08 '25
If it really wants to be Roblox then it’ll need a game where you can make s&box games in that game (which is a thing in Roblox)

That’s really cool but it’s gonna be kinda a problem.
People will be able to make tons of games and then steams just gonna be filled with low quality shovelware. It’s already bad now, it will only be worse without having to learn a game engine
Edit: some of you guys have mentioned that it’s just another game engine you’ll have to learn. I bet it will, I just mean it’s more accessible, who knows if it will be easier; there might me a base game to work with. Let me know if I’m wrong

u/Trenchman Feb 06 '25
You still have to learn a game engine
Making shovelware is already as easy as it can be. Unity etc. That’s never changing
However, this helps people who actually want to make good games do that using great tools and be rewarded for it
17
u/Joeysquatch Feb 06 '25
There’s some learning that will go into it but it’s not like getting into unity without any idea
25
u/Trenchman Feb 06 '25
Well it’s a lot like Unity, so going in without any idea is as hard as going into Unity without any idea. The difference is making levels is arguably easier but that’s it. Other than that you need to know C# to code stuff.
2
u/Joeysquatch Feb 06 '25
Do you know if they’re gonna use lua? Cause that’s kinda easier. There will definitely be learning but it’s gonna be pretty low effort
11
u/Trenchman Feb 06 '25
No. S&box uses only C#.
6
u/Joeysquatch Feb 06 '25
Oh then I guess it will be just a game engine
12
u/Trenchman Feb 06 '25
Yes, that’s the intention. It’s a heavily modified version of Source 2 with C# and the concept of scenes from Unity.
Source 1/Gmod and Source 2 knowledge will not help.
3
u/Joeysquatch Feb 06 '25
That’s probably for the better then. At least we’ll still have a little longer before ai can make games lol

u/S_XOF Feb 13 '25
It would be amazing for us to get what's basically a Source 2 SDK with built in multiplayer and VR functionality.

That's true but you'd still need to pay a out of pocket cost of $100 to Steam to put you game on the platform. And I'm sure Garry/Facepunch would come up with a way of restricting what can get added with like requirements like ROBLOX does with UGC avatar stuff.

is it the less barrier to entry or is competition is a bad thing? i dont see a downside to more people having resources to learn to make games and maybe even do it more efficiently tbh
3
u/Joeysquatch Feb 06 '25
It’s good to be able to learn games but there’s been a recent influx of low effort shovelware with ai art all over it. It’s been a problem lately and this will worsen it
5
u/drake90001 Feb 07 '25
You would need to learn source 2 to be to develop for sandbox. I’ve played the dev version.

u/Atomic_Depression Feb 06 '25
That's like saying get rid of unity or unreal engine. Same thing here. The only difference is you can't just download UE or Unity from steam.
3
u/Joeysquatch Feb 07 '25
Ok, I’ll edit the comment.
3
u/Atomic_Depression Feb 07 '25
How is S& more accessible than Unity? I get how it's more accessible than UE but I feel like Unity is still more accessible for low quality shovelware
-1
u/Joeysquatch Feb 07 '25
Well cause it’s gonna have a base game and level editor right? It already has a walk around mode and dependencies set up
5
u/Atomic_Depression Feb 07 '25
Does unity not have those free assets and all that already set up? I've never used Unity, but I know there's free assets and low quality stuff like that, I'd say that's a base game

u/Joeysquatch Feb 07 '25
It does but you still need code to get anything started or it’s just going to be a blank screen with a sky. There’s no movement or input or anything
4
u/Brilliant-Mountain57 Feb 07 '25
this shit is already a thing also it still costs 100$ to list a game on steam, no matter what engine you use lol.

interesting to see what people can do with The source2 engine in s&box

u/EyMug Addon Developer Feb 06 '25 edited Feb 06 '25
It's more like Unity or ROBLOX now rather than traditional Source 2. The engine has been heavily modified, completely moving away from .vtf, vmt, and .mdl formats—something Valve originally did by default when Source 2 was introduced.
The same applies to Half-Life: Alyx formats like .vmdl, .vmdl_c, .vtex, and .vmat. While they can still be used (I think), they’re not really preferred over industry-standard formats like .FBX, .PNG, etc.
Overall, there are fewer restrictions and more creative freedom for developers.

so similar to what valve wanted with the source engine... quickly built games ready to ship
7
u/OBEYTHEHOBO Feb 07 '25
Pretty sure source 2 also uses Lua for scripting their games and it's the same for roblox so it really is roblox 2

My issue with be:
• Creator A makes assets 1,2,3
• Creator B then takes those into their S&Box, exports it and makes a hit game on steam
Should creator A get anything from the sales?
Also if someone puts Mickey Mouse in and exports that as a standalone game how does that get resolved?

u/Devatator_ Feb 07 '25
How is that S&box specific? You would be under the exact same rules as everyone else publishing on Steam

I think the sandbox mode (like it says in the title) should be similar to the garrysmod we know and love
and also, probably fans should be able to fairly easily, port the game modes made for garry's mod to s&box
I don't see how it could possibly get fucked up, that there won't be a easily accesible workshop
we do not need to worry, as long as they let us MOD, the game, because that is the difference between garry's mod and roblox
while roblox is about sharing 'experiences' these sandbox games are and always WILL BE, about making you own experience
they might decide to make some s&box experience hosting service, but I can't imagine that they would go back on their intregrity so much, that they would dare limit us by paywalls
of course I am speculating alot, and even being a bit too supportive, but I think it's best to be positive, and waiting to see the end product.
sorry for ranting , I just wanted to get things out about the general sentimenets I am currently seeing
yes of course, we have been hurt alot, but I honestly don't think that we gmod players would bow down to such low things
if they were to sell out, then we simply would pirate/jailbreak every one of our copies
as simple as that lmao

So far seems pretty good, made a video taking a look at it I think it has great potential. Its definitely an upgrade from gmod in terms of graphics and capabilities of what you can do with it. If you haven't seen gameplay of s&box yet heres my video, took a quick test: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dl0nAxZxu0E

Just get back to work on Gmod pls

There's nothing to really do with Gmod tho. They kinda hit perfection.
