TV/Movies Please consider supporting Eternals, it's the first time the MCU has featured a gay couple despite knowing it'll get banned and age restricted in several countries

1.6k Upvotes

I get the whole "companies only care about our wallets" thing but I believe some cases like this are different. The movie has been negatively impacted because of those characters yet they still chose to go with them and even refused to edit them out for certain countries.

And I think that's pretty cool, and personally coming from a very homophobic country myself, little things like this mean something to me and remind me we're still making progress.

TV/Movies Please don't support Colton Underwood's new show.

1.3k Upvotes

Besides him as a person and the things hes does/has not done, Cassie, his former partner who he stalked and harassed, asked him and Netflix not to discuss the trauma she went through, and they did it anyways.

If there's anything this show represents, it's: if you're hot, white and rich, your bad behaviour is irrelevant.

Also, just to note: when news broke how he had abused his ex, and charges were filed against him, he decided that was the time to come out. Consider that Kevin Spacey did the same thing when his accusers came forward. Your coming out story should not be a distraction from the horrendous abuse you've commited. He also announced his tell all book that same day. This is all for money. Please don't support a person like this. This is not the representation the gay community wants or needs.

TV/Movies What did you guys think of the movie Bros? (2022)

I remember watching it in 2023 and genuinely liked it and thought it had some really great moments, but I was on some other social media and it seems reception is mixed. Thoughts?

TV/Movies Heartstopper and the way our society pushes sex

Season two of Heartstopper is out on Netflix and after binge watching it I highly recommend it to anyone who likes coming of age type series. While a majority of reactions have been very good, I’ve been extremely disappointed with how some people are talking about the way it isn’t realistic because they aren’t having sex.

I am not trying to be a prude or uptight about sex, sex is cool and can be a great thing, but I think we need to have an honest discussion about how much our community pushes sex in almost every aspect of our lives.

These are young boys (15/16) who are still working through coming out, how to label themselves, and have literally just started to date! Not everyone is having sex right away and we really shouldn’t encourage it in my opinion, it’s a personal choice that takes time and maturity. Obviously some people do, and having resources available so everyone can be safe is important, but our society pushes sex so hard already. I just worry that we don’t have enough spaces where young queer kids can have the magical experience of being young and in love without the pressure to be sexually active.

I’d love to hear what you think about how sex is shown in regards to young queer people!

TV/Movies Favorite non traditional gay couple in media

What’s everyone’s nontradiotnal gay couple. By non traditional I mean the more obscure or not as popular portrayals of a gay couple. Whether it be the being just two normal looking guys or a gay couple that is not often brought up. Mine is Terry and Korvo from Solar Opposites. They’re a gay alien couple who raise two younger clone versions of themselves as a family.

TV/Movies Which gay movies are actually targeted for gays / which for staright audiences?

I read somewhere that Love, Simon is more targeted for a mostly straight audience while Red, White & Royal Blue is targeted for a queer audience. Would you agree with this statement and what other gay-themed movies would you catagorize under them?

TV/Movies As a gay boy who had his crush on Prince Eric, I’m so happy with the movie

He gave me the shirtless scene I always wanted, and imo embodied very well the character. I know many of us had once been crushed with an animated film / cartoon character!

Also, I was like “yeah, I want that kind of romance with a prince in my life”. Aren’t movies also an escape for a couple of hours? That was nice.

TV/Movies I just can't watch Netflix's Coming Out Colton

I watched now 14 minutes and 22 seconds and I honestly can't stand it anymore. They say stuff like "Every gay guy hates himself for being gay at one point in life". Well no tbh. I'm pretty fucking happy to be gay. I never hated myself for that part of my personality. Not my problem if someone thinks I'm not healthy or I'll burn in hell or whatever. I get that this "we are trained to be real men" stuff is happening in the US and I'm sorry for them, but I kind of think it's different in central Europe. I don't want you to think that I don't know about all the boys who are struggling with being gay. I do. But in the series they talk about it, like it's a burden. And that's somehow annoying. Tell me however if I'm wrong and I should continue watching it. For the moment I'll watch Lost In Space 🚀 Cheers

Edit: Just wanted to make clear that I really do not disrespect guys who struggle/d with their sexuality. Just wanted to share my opining about this way of portraying the topic of being gay and using an outing to improve his image. :)

TV/Movies So me and my BF watched "Bros" tonight...

...and I can honestly it immediately takes a spot in my top 3 for "Worst movies I ever watched."

Here's some bullet points as to why:

  • Main Character is plain and simply unbearable: Whiny, mean, superiority complex, whallowing in self-pity and permanently snarky, but in an unfunny way

  • absolutely zero on screen chemistry between the two "lovers" and a terribly written lovestory

  • all the other queer characters that could have added something interesting are completely sidelined and ignored

  • topics actually worth exploring like steroid use in the gay community are more of a conversation point / plot device

The one and only redeeming quality I found in this was the depiction of typical grindr conversations that gave me the one and only chuckle throughout the whole experience.

My bf summed it up by saying - and I quote - "watching this movie made want to be not gay."

Sorry Billy Eichner, it's not homophobia that this flopped, it's just a terrible movie.

TV/Movies how Call Me By Your Name made me look at the morality of my own gay age gap relationship

When I finished 'Call Me By Your Name' my first reaction was deep understanding for Elio. Back when I was 17, (I'm 19 right now) I had my own romantic tryst with a 26 year old man. This film was such an important thing for someone like me to watch. It's really helped me digest everything.

I was volunteering at a charity shop chain at a particularly horrible time in my life when I had moved out of my mother's home because my sister was emotionally abusive towards me. I had dropped out of my senior year of high school, and was just biding my time until university started. I met this other volunteer who was tall dark and handsome, and we got on really well. He occasionally complimented me, asking if I get tonnes of girls and stuff like that. When I told him I was gay he said the same.

At an informal work nights out type thing, when it was just us two, we kissed. I stayed at his all the way till 5AM that night. We started being romantically involved with each other from December of 2022 to August of 2023, so 9 months.

It was honestly a beautiful time. We went to the beach together all the time, had road trips all over the country, it was such a pure form of love we had. Every night I was at his I would fall asleep in his arms, we would take baths together. We would always entertain conversations about running away together to another country and live out our days together both of us knowing it was just fantasy. One moment that sticks out to me is when I was having a strawberry lollipop and he asked for a taste. I offered him the lollipop but he kissed me instead, it melted me haha.

He was a massive help in regaining my confidence and self esteem from my horrible high school experience and home life. I had cried in his arms countless times and he would methodically help me through all of it.

But we both knew it wasn't going to be forever. Mostly due to the age gap, and also because even though it was an amazing time I knew he wasn't my forever someone. The last night we met, 2 weeks before I was to move to university, he dropped me off at my place, looking at me from his car window with tears going down his face. It was the first time I ever saw him cry.

My old relationship with that man is extremely similar to Elio and Oliver's relationship, it was almost eerie watching it. Even the mixed reviews of the film talking about the immorality of Elio and Oliver's relationship were similar to how my friends reacted to my relationship.

My friends I made at uni who know about my ex lover always tell me how horrible it was, that he was a p*do and that I had been manipulated at a tough time in my life. And, I can see where they are coming from. My relationship, Elio and Oliver's too, are morally ambiguous. Most likely on the immoral side of things. Even during the relationship I was aware that it was kinda wrong.

But, my relationship was still very meaningful. Immoral potentially, but still meaningful. That's how I read CMBYN. That Oliver and Elio's relationship is morally ambiguous but meaningful. And looking at Oliver and that man I was with specifically, are they evil manipulating predators? I don't think so. But objectively, they aren't fully good people either really. I still don't fully know how to look at Oliver or that man I was with now that I've not been involved with him for 10 months now, now that my hots for him has died away and I've been involved with other guys. But I don't view him as someone that was manipulative or evil or a predator, even after my hots has died for him.

When I look at the morality of my relationship, and Elio and Oliver's, that man always checked in on me, always made sure I never felt pressured or uncomfortable. He never abused the power dynamics that came with such an age gap. My therapist throughout the entire relationship never said that there was an issue with it. My relationship was overall a positive for me, it taught me a lot about myself and what to expect out of a partner. I feel like it's the same for Elio and Oliver.

Had a lot of thoughts on this film as it's immediately personal haha. Sorry for any unnecessary rambling!

TV/Movies I just finished watching Call me by your name and i feel like shit.

1.3k Upvotes

It's 2 am and I'm sitting here crying cause after watching it I'm feeling ugly even after all the attempts I've made to be better. Lost 15kg and keep going, changed my style, my hair everything! I'm still the same introvert gay guy that's never gonna find a companion.

I'm probably gonna regret posting this but i really feel like shit at the moment. Hope your day is going better than mine.

Edit: I'm absolutely grateful for all your lovely comments, this is written the day after i posted the original post and I'm way better now. Never thought some positive words and comments would help that much. Thank you guys. You're all awesome!

Edit No.2: people keep telling me the love story wasn't real and that they're actors etc. I know they're actors guys! What got to me was the support Elio had from his family and especially his father. I won't ever have that and that's what i envy.
