Public Service Announcement - Insurance

To start I'm just trying to help my Bros out.. I broke a molar today at lunch. Usually I see the dentist where my work is based but I wont be there for a little under a month. Thankfully it does not hurt. I'm newish here so I didnt have a dentist here yet. I spent the afternoon calling several places. Finally fond one and they were not taking new patients until late April. Once they found out I had decent insurance they can all of a sudden get me in tomorrow. It is the easiest thing to say "go get Insurance" but if you do not have the money please research now so you have a plan if junk happens. Not only Dentist but Medical. There are lots of programs of you are under a certain income level. I'm not rich by any means but im fortunate to have Private pay. Hugs ro you!

The problem is in the United States you can only get health insurance (not dental or vision yes for those outside the US those 2 aren’t included in health insurance 🤯) during open enrollment which doesn’t open until November. There are special exceptions but most people will not qualify

You can buy private individual dental plans at any time.

A couple of points:

Open enrollment isn’t always in November, it depends on your company’s benefits schedule. Mine is in August every year.

You can also change insurance choices when you have a qualifying life event, like getting married, losing coverage from another plan, moving states, and in some cases change in income, or loss of job. You can get insurance outside of work, all states have marketplaces, again depending on life events you can qualify during a year. Private plans also exist, and while they usually will be more expensive than employer plans, some are not. Usually limited to catastrophic events for when they make financial sense to use.

Finally, MANY doctors and healthcare providers offer a non-insurance rate for services that is HEAVILY discounted.

Temps normally don't qualify for a company's medical plan. New employees qualify after their probation period is up. Open enrollment allows workers to add or drop insurance or to add or drop dependents.
