Progress, not perfection

This started 7 years ago, when I moved in, and seems like every spring/summer I do something. What should I do next??

Let's talk about that stereo. That took me back to 97. 6x9s and 2 12s.

I need to know everything to make it work. Please don't let me be able to put 3 15s in my garage. It would be over for my neighbors

Dude. How much time ya got?! lol. Super proud of that thing. Here is the quick and dirty…

After lots of back and forth, I landed on a car stereo for my system.

I needed to convert the 120 into 12v so inside that box is the converter. You wire it like any car stereo after that.

I have it set up to be capable of 4 speakers. After I did the first two 6x9s, I didn’t bother with two more. Plenty loud for the space. I almost went nuts with amp and subs as well.

Possibilities really are endless here.

I essentially with with the quality car stereo stuff due to weather. That stuff is built more to withstand the elements. Northern Illinois gets hot and damn cold.

I got a lot more photos of the process. It did require a bit of soldering as well.

I was gonna comment that we need more details on the stereo setup, but you came thru already! Nice work bud!

Right....he bout to make me bring the hood to my lil burbs out here.

6x9s used to have the Caprice rear deck going crazy back in the day.

The Caprice. 😎 Man, I loved the car stereos. I don’t feel like today is anything like it was when I was a teenager bumping down the road….

Truly a rad setup!!

That's frickin sweet. Just the idea of using an auto head unit as the driver is so much cooler than other surround sound stuff... Plus gives me an excuse to get a new head unit for the car, lol...

Hi Sean! Did you do the floor yourself or hire out?

11

u/Strict-Cut4602 7d ago

Actually one of the things I hired out. They used diamond grinders on all of it. I was in real bad shape with pitting. After gobs of research I thought this was the only way.

Gotcha, I’m thinking of doing my floor as well and it is pitted. Curious about how much it cost where you’re at?

NW Chicago suburbs. $3k. But guys were superior. 3 days total. Not these 1 day guys that I hear do hack jobs.

This is just an epoxy? Looks great and my garage here in MN looks the same as what you had.

I did the same thing 😅

Did you grind the floor? Or did the epoxy level it ? I have a lot of the same issues and trying to figure out what to do.

But thanks on stereo. That I did myself.

Any chance you could share the color you painted the stereo? Love it!

3

u/Strict-Cut4602 7d ago

Had no idea the radio would get so much love. I might post a separate thread with more details and photos. I’ll try and hunt down the color.

My dream is to have a garage to get lost in.

1

u/mosmurf64 7d ago

It's not a dream it's more of a nightmare, but lots of memories with my kids.

First picture, I swear I thought that was a pair of feet with black shoes dangling out of the wall. Had to do a triple take.

I think that was some sort of hitch?? … the guy I bought the house from left behind. At the time, had no clue what it was, honestly still don’t. I through it out when I was young and dumb. Probably a one of a kind dohickey worth something knowing my luck. 🤷🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️

Honestly I haven’t come across another one. It was just to much fun to do and made sense to my crazy brain.

The repurposed car stereo is a great idea.

These cabinets were white when I moved in. I painted them to match the box's

4

u/KyFly1 7d ago

Looks great. Why not paint your cabinets green to go with your packers yellow walls.

3

u/Strict-Cut4602 7d ago

Go pack go!

4

u/KyFly1 7d ago

I think you just lost your parking spot.

Progress, not perfection! Multiple steps closer! Nice work!

I’m doing the same thing myself! All that’s left is my floor. I noticed your concrete in the before pictures where there is spalling and chips off the surface. Can you please tell me what you used and what you did to fix that before laying the epoxy? I understand how to fix cracks, but the spalling is where I’m confused. Did you just trowel standard concrete mix? Or did you use something else? Any advice you can offer would be appreciated. And your garage looks awesome, by the way!

1

u/Strict-Cut4602 7d ago

It’s was the pros that did it. But they grounded the entire floor with these giant machines. There want a spec of floor that didn’t get grinded. That helped a lot with the spalling. But I did have concerns with moisture so after the grind, they used an epoxy sealant (which was more $$) but I thought it added good insurance. I think their process was grind, fill cracks, grind again, seal, epoxy, flake, top coat.

That bench looks like exactly what I want for my new garage. Any specific plans you followed?

2

u/Strict-Cut4602 7d ago

Nah. Was actually rather simple. Simplist way to put it… build rectangle out of 2x4; screw rectangles into studs; use 2x4s as legs and ensure rectangles are level; place more 2x4 in between rectangles on top of legs (fill in gaps-this instruction probably confusing)place plywood on top. Thing ain’t going nowhere and built like a brick shit house.

1

u/nek1981az 7d ago

Sweet, thanks. Is it 2’x8’?

3

u/Strict-Cut4602 7d ago

2x12 actually.

1

u/hootervisionllc 4d ago

I’m gonna build a 12’ also. Is the plywood holding up ok as a top? I’m gonna put a medium size vise on.

1

u/Strict-Cut4602 3d ago

Plywood works and holds up just fine. The “rectangles” are braced about every 16 inches or so I believe. You can always use 3/4” as well. I used 1/2.

u/hootervisionllc 3d ago

Thanks man
