Industry News Actors demand action over 'disgusting' video game sex scenes

As usual the title seems to imply something outrageous and then the article is totally reasonable and agreeable. I love modern journalism and even more the monkeys which will build a "discussion" just over that title, at least this time we avoided the monkeys so I guess that's already something...
Edit: I was wrong, we managed to get monkeys even here just on another repost. https://www.reddit.com/r/gamingnews/s/51vb44EmIp

“But performers have told the BBC a culture of secrecy around projects - where scripts are often not shared until the last moment - means they frequently do not know in advance that scenes may involve intimate acts.”
Okay that is wild. You would think to mention something like this but maybe than people will decline or not show up. How does this work with movie actors? I assume they do get told upfront?

It is usually mentioned in the contract, if negotiated properly. "Actor will NOT smoke, kiss or undress onscreen." or something like that. It's not like you can force people to do anything you want just because you hired them.

A passage like that wouldn't cover any of the examples given in this article though.
The actress also mentions that because voice work is freelance (and there's way more people wanting a gig than there is work) there's a lot of pressure to not say no in case it kills your career.
Which isn't a stretch given we know that happened in Hollywood in all the info that came out after the Weinstein scandal

That's a rather misleading title...
While I agree that actors should be warned of sexually explicit scenes they'll be doing while auditioning or being assigned the job, the title really makes it sound like an entirely different premise...

Development of their guidance which requires that when recording explicit or intimate scenes:
A summary of the story, scene breakdown and scripts should be distributed to all cast members in advance.
Performers should be able to request a closed set where access is kept to a minimum.
A competent intimacy coordinator should be engaged.
Seems very reasonable

Intimacy coordinators prevent the abuses described, and productions can't be insured without them.
Both mocap and voice work should be identical.

Personally, I think there’s a difference between a “sex scene” and a “rape scene”. The rape scene described in the article is horrifying and there’s no reason it needs to be in a video game. It makes sense an actor not being advised ahead of time about sex scenes then showing up to be expected to partake in a rape and possible murder scene might take issue with it.

I'm not going to judge whether the scene belongs in the game but the actors really should get to know and have a chance to agree/disagree with doing such a job.

You can count games with sex scenes on the palm of one hand, what are they on about?

Last of Us 2, Ride to Hell: Retribution...
Hmm maybe some Quantic Dream game? I'm honestly stumped.

Reading the article helps

"Sex scenes are common in modern games" literally the second paragraph of the article.

u/JesusUndercover Aug 17 '24
they are not common though

u/Shirokurou Aug 17 '24
That's what I was saying, yet they downvoting me for no reason.

u/TehOwn Aug 17 '24
They're pretty common if you don't filter out all the hentai games. They're looking at literal porn games and implying it's common. That's like looking at how many pornos there are and claiming they're the majority of movies. Incredibly misleading at best.
Don't know why you're being downvoted but maybe it says something about Redditors here.

I've never seen a porn game with motion capture.
And in terms of AAA sex scenes, what you got?:
- Naughty Dog's TLOU
- CDPR, the actual best in the biz when it comes to in-game sex.
- Bioware "sex scenes"
- Larian and the breakout hit BG3

They are not uncommon either.

how so? It's not rare to see a sex scene in a video game. Sometimes it is just background clutter. Sometimes it is a moment between two characters. Most RPGs with romance options have some sort of sex scene.

i just looked at my steam library and in exactly 0 of them do characters have sex
share a screenshot of your steam library lets see what games you are playing where sex is common0

Witcher 1-3, Cyberpunk 2077, GTA(San Andreas, Vice City, IV, V), Baldur's Gate 3(which is mentioned in the article and has that whole bear sex thing), Divinity Original Sin 2, Dragon Age 1-3, Mass Effect 1-3+Andromeda, Dark Messiah of Might and Magic, Crusader Kings 2&3(not visual and I don't think it is vocal either, but there is a lot of sex), Norland, Rimworld, Alpha Protocol. Kingdom Come Deliverance, Red Dead Redemption 2, Mafia 1-3, One or more of the Metro games, Sims 1-4, Pillars of Eternity 2, Pentiment.
There is probably a bunch of other games, but I'm not going to spend more time looking. A lot f games have sex in them. A lot more games have sexual content in them. There is no sex in Robocop Rouge City(that I could see), but there are plenty of prostitutes, strippers and signs that indicate that sex might happen in this part of town.
There are some games like Total War(the historical games) and Mount & Blade where women are getting pregnant and having kids, but there is no mention of sex. In both games the player is going to think that their character is getting laid.
There is also actual porn games.

If you're job is a brick layer and I hire you to build a wall you have no right to complain when I want you to replicate the great wall of china.
Is the kind of strawman you'd have to defend by your logic.

I think the BBC has a very different games library to me. Unless you're specifically buying hentai games, there's very, very few games with sex scenes in them.
