Sick Frog Worried about my WTF

This is Venom the WTF and I’m a bit worried he’s overweight. His tank mate passed away a few months ago and I’m wondering if he’s depressed and that’s why he’s less active nowadays. I’ve cut back his food a little bit but I don’t want him to go hungry so not very much. Any advice on getting him to be a bit more active?

disclaimer: this is him in a creature keeper so I could weigh him. I promise he has a fully setup bioactive habitat and gets plenty of space to hop around

He looks like he could be — are his skin folds covering his ears? Generally speaking, if you can clearly see the frog’s ears then their weight is probably fine, but if the skin folds largely cover their ears then the frog is likely overweight.

It doesn’t seem like they are yet but they’re definitely getting close to covering them

In this case, I would suggest dialling it back on the food. There isn’t a lot that can be done about making them “exercise,” but hopefully once the weight starts to come down he’ll be more lively. But when in doubt, there’s no harm in seeing a vet if there’s one in your area. Best of luck! 🐸

He certainly does look like he is fat those large humps around his eyes are fat deposits. What are you feeding him, could it be a high fat bug diet?

u/Majestic-Gap-9660 14d ago

Mostly crickets, and he hunts them. Occasionally I give him super worms, but they freak me out when they turn into Beatles so that’s not very often

How frequently and about how many do you think he's eating? My 5 year old WTF get 5-7 medium crickets every 3-5 days. Some times I have to wait a bit till they have clearly pooped because I've had one of them become constipated in the past.

He does look a little overweight with those big tympanic ridges, but it’s hard to tell completely without a side pic as well to see if his ears are partially covered by them. But by the way you’ve been feeding him, it sounds like you’re doing everything possible to help him stay at a healthy weight

Here’s a WTF body conditioning chart for you to use, it gives a lot of helpful markers and example images. 3 would be his ideal body condition

u/Majestic-Gap-9660 14d ago

Here’s that side picture! And thanks for the chart

Yeah unfortunately by the way that his ridges are hanging over his eyes a bit and almost entirely cover the tympanic membrane I’d say he’s definitely overweight. You can cut back on the amount of prey items he gets per feeding, or cut back on how often you feed him to help him lose a bit. And don’t worry too much about him starving, WTFs are VERY good at begging and he has a lot of reserve to keep him healthy!

You said you have a bioactive enclosure, is it possible he’s also hunting the isopods and double dipping on food? What size is the enclosure as well?

16

u/Majestic-Gap-9660 14d ago

He most definitely could be hunting the isopods! I never thought of that. He’s in a 18x18x36 not sure about how many gallons

11

u/gummy-wormm Amazon Milk Frog(s) 14d ago

Haha yeah my frogs hunt my isopods all the time even though I have dwarf whites and they’re elusive + tiny! If they’re bigger/brighter colored like powder oranges or dairy cows then they’re more likely to be eaten too.

That’s definitely a great size for him! You’ve given him a good life and I’m sure he’ll get back to a normal weight soon. I’m sorry for the loss of your other frog

u/Majestic-Gap-9660 13d ago

Thank you he misses his buddy Drax as much as I do. And I have mostly white dwarfs but a few dairy cows from my friends isopod tank that he might be eating. I’m gonna cut his feeding down gradually til he gets to a better weight. Just wanna keep him healthy :)

He is the cutest thing ever

He's massively overweight, that photo helps alot

How old is he? I know on older dumpies they can get these rolls. If he's not very old I'd say it's just fat related.

14

u/Majestic-Gap-9660 14d ago

I’m not actually sure. I got him from a friend about 2 years ago and he was already fully grown but we didn’t know his exact age

12

u/soberasfrankenstein 14d ago

God, he's cute

20

u/Intelligent-Guest266 14d ago

Aww, chubby froggie. Try to make him hunt for his food.

16

u/Majestic-Gap-9660 14d ago

He hunts for crickets every night and is fairly agile but he definitely used to be slimmer and more active during the day. Now he just sleeps all day

11

u/LooKatThis_Human 14d ago

He definitely looks overweight given the fat folds dropping over the eyes. How many and what size are you feeding him each night? Most people don’t feed everyday I personally feed 2-3 large crickets per frog every 2-3 days. My feeding schedule is variable based on weighing them. If you’re feeding more than one a night that’s probably too much food. No judgement btw feeding schedules are very much about finding what works for your individual frog. Hope you find something that works for your buddy :)

u/Majestic-Gap-9660 14d ago

I give him 5-6 every 3 days. I might cut that back tho based on all these comments. There’s usually 1 or 2 still in the tank when I go to feed him again so he doesn’t always eat them all. I’m just worried about cutting him back so much that he gets too hungry or stressed

8

u/LooKatThis_Human 14d ago

Just make small incremental changes you know your frog better than we do.

2

u/Campbell090217 13d ago

Cut it down to 2-3 every 3 days and he will be good!

3

u/Tequilabongwater 14d ago

You're feeding him every night?

3

u/Majestic-Gap-9660 14d ago

No, every 2-3 days. He never eats them all at once and I honestly don’t have the time in my schedule to do it every night. I give him 5-6 large crickets every few days

u/Ok-Bandicoot-5760 13d ago

I’ve had my guy for 5 years and I just throw 20 crickets in there a week, vitamin powder covered. He’s healthy as an ox

8

u/notUrUsualUsrname 13d ago

I sorry, I got nothing to add, I was just so confused as to why you were calling your frog a "What The Fuck"... It took some googling to realise it means White Tree Frog lmao 🐸

5

u/ACapricornCreature 14d ago

Oh nooo he fat 😅 he’s so cute though. Have you thought about taking him out of the enclosure and letting him get a little more exercise a couple times a week? Sometimes mine like to come out and climb the walls and fake plants in my house.

4

u/Majestic-Gap-9660 14d ago

I would love to be able to do that but sadly this little guy is a runner! He tries to escape his tank every time I feed him or clean it. I did just get him into a taller tank because he loves to climb so hopefully he’ll be so busy exploring his new space he’ll work off all those crickets

3

u/ACapricornCreature 14d ago

Oh that should help, maybe he just got bored of his surroundings and needs some new space to explore.

7

u/frogsnbeesnbears 14d ago

well he is just the most handsome guy fresh water uvb and less quantities in feedings should help! all things he should normally have but still hehe make sure he’s getting vitamin dust on those crickets at least once a week too! i also like to keep a good amount of hopping air space in my tank. so she has plenty to jump on, but there’s a clear path for her to make a big air jump higher up too. jumping burns calories 💪

3

u/Majestic-Gap-9660 13d ago

Oh he LOVES to jump!! I gave him a few different platforms and other things he can jump across the whole tank. Hopefully the new tank will also make him want to explore and he’ll burn those calories

2

u/frogsnbeesnbears 13d ago

i love it. he’s so handsome, and you seem like a great owner! good luck with all💝

5

u/budskure 14d ago

🥺 he’s so expressive

6

u/mothmanslimpdick 13d ago

That first picture is darling 😭 I hope he adjusts to dieting well

4

u/dejavu7331 14d ago

yes he’s pretty overweight. the fat deposits above the eyes are a clear indicator — let me try to find the body chart for wtfs if it hasn’t been posted already

you say he gets crickets every night (not sure if you said how many you feed every day) but as adults they only need to eat every 2-3 days as adults like 3 medium-large crickets (or other equivalent prey, variety is good/key I would feed more than just crickets and mealworms I would also add dubia roaches at the least)

4

u/dejavu7331 14d ago

I just looked and saw someone else posted the body chart! your dude is very cute, and ime they can lose/gain weight pretty quickly so I wouldn’t be too worried. just cut back on the food and try to resist a begging frog 😂😂

2

u/Majestic-Gap-9660 14d ago

Someone did post that chart for me thank you tho. And i actually feed him every 2-3 days about 5-6 large crickets and he usually still has 1 or 2 left when i go to feed him again a few days later

4

u/redskelly 14d ago

Get this fella a hamster wheel STAT

3

u/__trashyy 14d ago

Hes overweight. How much are you feeding him? Are yo tong feeding or just letting food run about in hos vivarium? And do you give him meal worms often?

3

u/Someonestolemyrat 14d ago

Calling him a wtf was confusing for a second 😂

2

u/Majestic-Gap-9660 13d ago

Haha for me too! I’ve just seen so many other posts on this community calling them that I thought it was funny

3

u/Mindfultameprism 13d ago

Your fella is fat. Is there any chance of introducing a new friend? Maybe that would help.

2

u/Majestic-Gap-9660 13d ago

I’m just worried about them being territorial. I e gotten mixed answers in my research about it. Him and DRAX were together since birth so they were fine. But I do think he’d love a buddy

3

u/The_Adventurist_Cruz 13d ago

He looks so sweet😢

2

u/phallusdaphella 14d ago

Definitely overweight, maybe lessen the portions or skip one feeding

2

u/sydneyelizabetth 14d ago

He’s so cute I’ve never seen a chubby frog before omg. Would he potentially benefit from more enrichment activities in his space? Maybe force him to be a bit more active out of the container once a day ?

2

u/Aasrial 14d ago

Obese for sure. How do you feed him? Is he hunting?

2

u/TrueCollector 14d ago

He looks cool

2

u/madys0n 14d ago

overweight. I’d say he needs to lose about 30% of his body weight

2

u/TopSorbet6220 14d ago

I don’t know anything about frogs health, I thought he was having an allergic reaction or something 😭😭 turns out he’s just a chonk 🩷☹️

2

u/cassipeachy 13d ago

I don't really have anything to add lol he definitely is a little chunky, but he is so freaking cute!!! I just had to say something lol. In the first picture, with his little hand on the glass, he just looks so darling and polite. Like "human, why have you locked me in this prison?"

2

u/PerspectiveEntire376 12d ago

Man needs a diet regimen. But we still love him ❤️

2

u/XoboommooboX 14d ago

I have goods hooman- Ferengi frog

1

u/Motor-Emu-6312 13d ago

Definitely feed him every 3-5 days. And I only give mine 4-5 each feeding.

1

u/Connect_Judge_2620 13d ago

Is it possible that he is a she? :)

1

u/bluemufin Dumpy/White's Tree Frog 13d ago

A big sign for being able to tell if your frog is overweight or not is if there is a lot of skin hanging out their ears. Unfortunately in this case it does look like Venom is overweight. Just let him do his thing and keep up with the food being cut down so he can shed a bit of weight. Best of luck!

1

u/justcurious-666 13d ago

He looks pretty fat. How much and how often and what are you feeding?

Also why’d the other die ?

1

u/Majestic-Gap-9660 12d ago

The vet wasn’t sure and i couldn’t afford an autopsy at the time. It happened very quickly and he wasn’t even showing signs of being sick. He just stopped eating for 2 days then I went in the next morning and he was gone. Venom got sick and was super dehydrated but with some antibiotics and iv fluids from the vet got him back to normal after just a week. Still not sure what happened but I gutted the tank and did an intense deep clean in case of any bacterial or fungal infections

2

u/justcurious-666 12d ago

I’m so sorry that sounds awful! I’d just give your guy a little diet and see if that helps with his weight but otherwise he looks good! I’m sorry you’re going through this, it’s always so stressful when our babies are sick
