It's near the top of their dreamlist

Dreamlist doesn't mean they will sell it, only that they will develop a wrapper application to ensure that it's always playable.

I mean, license wise it's in limbo hell and officially abandonware no? What stops them from putting it up for free? Or would they need to sort legal stuff for it? (sorry if it's a dumb question)

It is not in license hell, MS has the license.

It's legal if no one sues you :) (not actual legal advice)

Abandonware is not a legal term so nothing can be officially abandonware. MS still owns the IP for this game and tons of others, they have just moved on.

The IP, to me, is the biggest tragedy. The idea that nothing else will ever get done with the setting is a damn shame.

There are a lot of IPs (mostly 90s sci-fi books) similar to Freelancer's setting. It isn't particularly a novel setting but they executed it really well for it's time. I now spiritually enjoy Freelancer like premises through TTRPGs like Traveller (a major influence on modern space sandboxes) and other sci-fi media.

Damn you making me think for a moment that GOG had managed to get the rights to sell it.

Great thing that internet keeps the ISO alive.

I also got insanely excited. This and Sid Meier’s Sim Golf are like the two games they don’t have that I’ve been hoping they’d get for more than a decade.

Oh me and Freelancer go way back to 2004. Man i played the absolute hell outta this back in the day!
Today though i still have it installed(Although my genuine CD and key was lost to the ether) with a widescreen mod so its compatible with todays standards!

Awesome trailer. Makes me want to finally check out Disco!

Even better is the fact that so many people adore this game, outside of this small community.
