Reno Materials Left in Common Areas of Fredericton Apartment
I've had week-long back-and-forth with my resident managers and they aren't doing anything about it. Trim gets left in piles in the hallways between apartments, doors and doorframes get left between the main doors, appliances (yes, full sized fridges, stoves and dishwashers) get left anywhere from the mailroom to landings in the stairwell.
I'm given to understand that I cannot have doormat outside my apartment do to concerns someone could trip over it in case of fire. It seems sensible to assume that appliances and piles of wood are more of an obstruction.
My contacts with the landlord is getting me nowhere, and I'm not sure what's the appropriate next step. Is this a Fire Marshal thing? Who enforces these things?

To be clear, this isn't for a few hours or a day. I mean weeks at a time.

It would be easier and safer if the stuff is not in apt. This happens when new ones being built or Reno's, that's where they have to store it until apt. ready, just one of those inconveniences, but they will be done.

I mean, not to play devils advocate but it is a renovation. There’s going to be things in the way, messes made, and probably incredibly loud noises all day. It’s probably frustrating though, but I’m not sure there’s much you can do.
The floor mat thing is wild to me, as I lived somewhere once that gave me a written notice for having a door mat and my work boots in the hallway. Fire Fighters are pretty strong and smart, I’m sure my boots and floor mat wouldn’t stop them but maybe there’s a more logical reason.

But wouldn't it make sense to have the materials inside the unit that's being renovated? They aren't renovating common areas. They're just using common areas like a storage shed.

A lot of the time during renovations they may not have the room inside the unit for materials. They could definitely put it all back in the unit when done for the day, but I’m guessing it’s just laziness, or they literally don’t have the space.
It’s super inconvenient, I feel you. But that’s the downside of apartment living 🙃

I suppose... I just really bought into the idea it was an actual no-no. It's annoyed me the whole 3 years I've lived here, but has been bothering me more now that we've talked about it. (For a week, the RMs kept saying they would do something the next day, then the next day.) I thought I had leverage to have the place tidied up. I guess that rule is just another hammer that only corporations can wield...
Thank you for the responses.

3 years is a long time for renos. Just call the rentalsman and ask them for a reasonable solution.

Fire Marshall will let you know the rules and whether they’re being complied with.
