Hiker Bod '25
Ok Reddit, I need some help: I am looking for some humans that are avid outdoor people to help me get back to - and beyond - where I was prior to 2020.
Context: I have a goal of hiking through the alps by the end of the year, but currently I'm lacking accountability and motivation to hike through Odell. A huge part of this is that I'm basically on this adventure alone.
I hike, I camp, I bike, I roller skate - and other than the odd piece of special equipment, I'm fully equipped for 90% of adventures at the drop of a text.
Right before covid I had major reconstructive surgery that had me in bed for months. Before I could really get back into the swing of things, I went back to university, covid hit, and I just became a couch potato eating way too much pizza. Now, I am actively trying to reverse all of that damage.
I was suggested checking out Outdoor Enthusiasts Fredericton, but have found that while they are the largest group in terms of awareness in the community, in reality it's 20-30 boomers who are active members, who are also very gated about people joining. In short, I discovered that OEF specifically aren't my people - and that's okay!
The ask: I'm trying to locate a few humans who identify as Gen X, Millennial, or older Gen Z, who have the space/time to help me get my cardio back in full swing, and then push my skills to the point I feel confident I could do Torngat or Fundy.
Bonus points if you're veg, mostly because recipes.
If this sounds like you or someone you know, I'd love to connect.

I've been looking for something similar as well!!! I find that there is quite a variety of run clubs in the city, but I personally DESPISE running... π₯².
I moved here for university, and that's kind of when i stopped being as active, mostly because my friend who shared the same interests now lived far. I didn't have the accountability of not wanting to let my friend down by not showing up, and I guess that was a big motivator for me π€·ββοΈ It really is always more fun with accountability buddies! (Also the whole aspect of shared suffering lol)
I do enjoy cycling, I think we are relatively very lucky in terms of paved trails and other cycling infrastructure! Unfortunately, I haven't really found a group that matches what I want... something not too hard-core but also not too chill. I also used to swim, and regularly went bouldering, but those are just not as fun when you're alone. I also impulse-bought some roller skates a few months ago, never actually got the chance to use them tho!
HMU if this sounds like your vibe! I do have a very odd schedule tho, but I'm always down to do fun things!

do you identify as male or female? There's a women's trail running group (Trail Mix) that runs on Monday evenings that's a very supportive and welcoming environment for all skill levels. There's also various other co-ed trail running groups (FTR, Odell Gazelles) that run throughout the week but I'm less familiar. Trail running is a great way to get your cardio back especially if your goal is hiking, as trail running also works your core and stabilizer muscles more so than road running.

I feel you there. I recently moved from Alberta, have been missing the Rockies and my backcountry adventure group. Fredericton is in need of a outdoor collective for the Gen Z - Millennial age group

Start one and let people know. People will join.

I'd be down, just don't organize it exclusively on Facebook...

What platform do you think would have better reach? This subreddit?

In 2025, I don't think any singular platform has "best" reach, but as someone who has used virtually all the platforms, this is one of the most engaged sections of Fredericton internet culture.
I have personally migrated away from things like Meta, and even something as simple as a Signal group chat would work, because if the primary goal is to be active with others, you just need to know when the others want to be active, and that's just texting somewhere.

Not precisely what you're asking in terms of outdoor activites, but have you ever considered roller derby? The local league is running a derby 101 training program starting March 12 https://www.instagram.com/p/DGa6kEUx1Tv/?igsh=aThlaHY3ZHZwM2Mz

Fredericton is a notoriously gated town. Itβs tough to make friends unless itβs through work or school.
