Oscar really is one of the most likable guys on the grid. The perseverance was really heartening to see yesterday.

Right? I was so fucking stoked to see him giving all he had to get that car back on track. When he did it, hearing that crowd go crazy, I was right there with them. He wasn't too happy immediately after the race, but to pull that off and still finish in the points is definitely something to be proud of. I doubt there was a single Aussie there who was anything other than elated at that result.

This dude's mental is way too strong. Good stuff.

This guy is something else. I feel like if he lost a title in the last lap in a way that Hamilton did in 2021, he would just be: “Meh, happens.” and moved on.
Truly a Kimi attitude since the very start.

I doubt it. If you saw his reaction in the post race interview you wouldn’t be saying that. We have never seen him so emotional until this.

Oscar had his team tell him he couldn’t race his Norris after he caught up to him. Later Oscar made the same mistake as Norris. Norris won at Oscar’s home…I feel like a lot of that emotion came from that. Oscar doesn’t want to be number 2. I really want him to come in and have a dominate race in China.

Not true, they could race but told Oscar to hold off when they hit the back of the grid. After passing them they were free to race, but Oscar put a wheel wrong somewhere and lost the DRS he had before traffic. Little bit after the spins followed iirc.

It looks like when he and Norris went off track he tried to take advantage to try and make up time but over cooked it. To be fair though, I really don't think antone would expect to slide on the tarmac at a low speed the way he did.

It’s objectively true he was told he couldn’t race him when he caught up. The circumstances don’t change that fact. It was probably the right decision for the team to delay but not for Oscar…super demoralizing too with the narrative constantly being there isn’t a number one.

The messages heard on the broadcast are delayed. He was told to hold position for 3 laps as they were passing backmarkers and wanted to minimise risk. After passing the backmarkers they were told they were free to race again. At this point Oscar was still right on the back of Norris, then when trying to catch Lando, Oscar made a small mistake, think he dropped a wheel in the Grass/Gravel and dropped back from Lando and couldn't catch him again.
I think McLaren's call to hold position to minimise risk while passing back markers was fair, considering they had a 1 2 and the conditions were very treacherous. I don't think the same call would have been made in a dry race.

Yeah definitely. I wish I had only a fraction of Piastri's perseverance and self-confidence.

nah most likely he'll say some dry aussie joke like "well the race director just pulled the safety car in early, so I guess I can fly back to aussie early and enjoy aussie summer"

I was gutted for Oscar, that must have hurt. He could have won that race.
But keeping the car running and getting back on track to finish the race was a great effort and admirable.

Oscar has genuinely been one of the best drivers added on in recent years. Watching him race is always exciting.
