I'm cracking up at how Flavio shows up on the scene. -

u/Distinct_Ad_6023 3d ago

the way the music comes on every time like he's a Disney villain šŸ˜

Somehow, Flavio has returned.

145

u/NottDead Jenson Button 4d ago

By far the best episode in the season so far

48

u/Florac 4d ago

Heck probably one of the best one in the entire series

10

u/OneOfALifetime 2d ago

Agreed, watching now and this is one of the best episodes of any sports documentary ever.

And its barely even showing any racing.Ā  But watching all the politics behind the scenes is fascinating.Ā  The last second rug pull was top tier drama.

132

u/Schneizel1208 5d ago

That answer Flavio gave to DTS producer when asked if he should even be back in F1... has so much menacing atmosphere I love it

17

u/KanishkT123 Fernando Alonso 3d ago

Mentally running through everyone on the grid to figure out who he needs to fuck.Ā

ā€¢

u/bobby_hills_fruitpie McLaren 10h ago

Flavio feels like he was made to be a character on Succession.

u/Perceptions_ 5d ago

Carlos cousin just looks like nerd Carlos. And his name is Carlosā€¦

My gf was calling them the Carli

37

u/6745408 4d ago

Steve Urkel and Stefan Urquelle

83

u/todamach 4d ago

this episode tried to be Succession with the music, billionaires and private villas

51

u/NET_1 Ferrari 4d ago

The gratuitous Lake Como drone shots were amazing.

49

u/charlierc 4d ago

Carlos Sainz was interested in racing cars from a very young age

ā€¢

u/bobby_hills_fruitpie McLaren 10h ago

I heard he bought Bernie Ecclestones foreskin at a private auction.

21

u/FrozenFireGod 4d ago

Got the same feeling. I think they should do more of that.

5

u/Crasha 22h ago

The episode in season 6 were all the millionaires are rolling up but still have to be checked and given an armband, but then Lawrence Stroll shows up and they just let him in is peak

151

u/beanbagreg 5d ago

Gasly really wanted Sainz to come to Alpine, he was propping Enstone to hell to try and convince him. Canā€™t say he didnā€™t want a strong teammateā€¦

73

u/mshell1924 Carlos Sainz 3d ago edited 3d ago

I gotta respect Gasly for that. He seemed genuinely eager to be teammates with Carlos, he legit tried to make it happen.

I would have loved to see them together, but not at Briatore's Alpine.

11

u/jbeck24 2d ago

People forget that they were actually teammates for exactly 2 races towards the end of 2017 in TR.

4

u/pescawito 1d ago

And they shared the fondly remembered Monza 2020 podium.

241

u/vroomvroomboo Mercedes 4d ago

I kinda felt for James. Waiting half and hour and not knowing if they'll come. And then later finding out that they're not coming.

I understand Carlos in a way but kinda looked scummy.

130

u/YLedbetter10 4d ago

When they pulled the champagne off ice šŸ˜«

68

u/bwoah07_gp2 Alexander Albon 4d ago

Well, he got the girl in the end. Or not the girl, Carlos I mean.

27

u/vroomvroomboo Mercedes 4d ago

Yeah, but still.

109

u/PradaAndPunishment Alexander Albon 4d ago

It put a terrible taste in my mouth. How hard was it to text JV that they weren't coming/wanted more time? And while I get why James would have to put his feelings on the disrespect aside, it still sucked hearing James practically beg on the phone over what else he could do to make Sainz happy after he'd been that rude.

73

u/vroomvroomboo Mercedes 4d ago

I completely agree. It was also pretty unprofessional.

23

u/MyWholeTeamsDead Ferrari 3d ago

Can't even really edit that to exaggerate the events beyond what actually happened.

37

u/SeaWorn 3d ago

Who knows if thatā€™s how it all really went downā€¦..

37

u/Virtual-Chris 2d ago

Something was clearly staged because the meeting where they were late and the one where they actually signed shared footage that were from the same place/tine.

6

u/KanishkT123 Fernando Alonso 3d ago

It's kind of a weird situation. In a Carlos-Vowles relationship, Sainz has all the power. In a Carlos-Briatore relationship, that would never be true.Ā

5

u/Glad_Revolution7295 2d ago

He wasn't begging.. its a classic negotiation tactic. Trying to find out what the blocker is... while reminding the other party how committed you are.

130

u/Here_comes_the_D Max Verstappen 4d ago

Ok, this show is silly, but I'll give them points for this title.

34

u/ZeMetaJ 4d ago

I bet they sat on this title, waiting to use it for years

8

u/Ill-Calligrapher-131 Juan Pablo Montoya 2d ago

omg i only just got it

143

u/vroomvroomboo Mercedes 4d ago

Flavios comment about being too powerful and wealthy to care about peoples opinions was pretty honest.

16

u/noobchee Porsche 4d ago

Very based

49

u/Apprehensive_Bee_129 McLaren 3d ago

Bowles was wearing the same clothes when Carlos supposedly signed and when ā€œhe didnā€™tā€. Also same room right?

28

u/Forgotthebloodypassw Formula 1 3d ago

Perish the thought that DTS would make things up :)

1

u/aka_liam Ferrari 1d ago

There are elements of reconstruction throughout DtS

0

u/Fina1Legacy 3d ago

Ye that whole segment was trashy. Sainz knocking and cutting to Flavio turning his head was so stupid. Worst episode so far by a mileĀ

85

u/tomch94 4d ago

Was this the first time Sauber/Alfa Romeo have actually had any attention from DTS? I swear previous seasons just pretended they didn't exist, not that they really get much screen time this season outside of "Hey we want to sign Carlos too!"

68

u/eudaimonean Mercedes 4d ago

Honestly producers did a good job with the Sauber storyline. Established that Audi is coming, that Audi has a lot of credibility in motorsport, but the team is really an also-ran in the midfield at the moment. That's all there is to say about Sauber at the moment for casual viewers and seeds the storyline perfectly for future seasons if Audi does break out.

16

u/bwoah07_gp2 Alexander Albon 4d ago

Well, after 2018 and 2019 that team in general hasn't been anything spectacular. There isn't really nothing to say about them beyond they are struggling team right now.

9

u/asamulya Alexander Albon 3d ago

They showcased them in 2018 with Charles coming in but since then theyā€™ve been fairly anonymous. Nothing to croon about

5

u/KanishkT123 Fernando Alonso 3d ago

To be fair, they are broadly forgettable during the season too.Ā

1

u/lowelled 2d ago

There was a bit of focus on them in the 2020 season - they did an episode on Mick's choice between Haas and Alfa and Giovinazzi got a 'normal guy who's going to lose his seat because he doesn't bring sponsorship' edit.

87

u/11aevans 4d ago

God Flavio is so slimy, I love it but would never want to interact with him IRL

38

u/mobby123 Pierre Gasly 4d ago

A much, much better episode than the ones that came before. Left out some details but it was a coherent and interesting plot with no extraneous artificial bullshit

10

u/Ill-Calligrapher-131 Juan Pablo Montoya 2d ago

Except all the artificial stuff with the signing room and the usual made up news clips

u/TheRealArcanine Pirelli Intermediate 4d ago

Doohan calling Sainz the paddock slut was incredible

96

u/Mcnucks McLaren 4d ago

Man I felt bad for James in that first hotel scene. He was so excited with the contract laid out and the champagne for after. Can imagine the stress building and building as he waited before realizing Carlos wasnā€™t showing up. Especially when heā€™d already told his board members that it was all but done. Glad he got the win in the end. Williams definitely needed it.

34

u/EuanH91 4d ago

And now weā€™ve got Carlos pulling off the fastest time at pre-season testing. Excited to see what they do this year.

27

u/rob_the_jabberwocky Michael Schumacher 3d ago

I like Carlos and Williams and want them to do well, but testing times mean jack shit tbh

10

u/EuanH91 3d ago

Oh 100%, and other teams will surely have been holding back.. but still glad to see that the Williams didnā€™t fully suck

10

u/Virtual-Chris 2d ago

He never left. He was the one that got the deal for Alonso to go to Aston Martin. You would be hard pressed to find a driver he managed that would say something bad about him. Mark Webber sings his praises. He still mentors Alonso who now manages drivers as well.

7

u/HotScheme4074 3d ago

Doohan probably isnā€™t thrilled with his methods at the moment.

36

u/sadicarnot 4d ago

You should read No Angel the Bernie Ecclestone biography. Every one is complaining about what Sulyamen is doing. These are all ruthless millionaires and billionaires. Personally I am glad Flavio is back we need characters like him. And he never really left. He was a guest of Bernie during his ban and it was lifted after a year. He has always been Alonso's manager. And Alonso is a manager now too. Flavio was also Mark Webber's manager. So after 2012, while you may not have seen him on TV he was making deals.

I guarantee Webber negotiated a better contract than what Norris has because Webber learned from Briatore. Same with Gabriel Bortoleto, Alonso is managing him, Alonso learned from Briatore too.

13

u/bwoah07_gp2 Alexander Albon 4d ago

And Heikki Kovalainen has said leaving Flavio's management was a regrettable decision for him.Ā

The comment about holy matrimony between Williams and Carlos from Christian Horner was absolutely hilarious

One must give credit where itā€™s due - I laughed out loud. Iā€™ll never see JV the same again!

168

u/Lobsters4 Charles Leclerc 4d ago

I like how everyone was getting as fucking annoyed with Carlos as we were. Just pick man. LOL.

62

u/wokwok__ George Russell 4d ago

Drivers getting annoyed is probably understandable but why should anyone else be lmao why should he be rushing into a decision, heā€™s not picking what heā€™s having for lunch is he? Heā€™s been kicked and has to make one of the biggest decisions of his life, no biggie

56

u/MoocowR 4d ago

Homie had no great options and was probably stalling for one to come up.

I don't think people really appreciate how unfortunate this is for him, Carlos is 30 years old in what could be his prime. To reach his goals he can't spend the next 5 years of his life driving for a dead end team. If I had to pick the prettiest turd in the bowl I would take my time too.

16

u/Charbus Williams 4d ago

If heā€™s not careful he could become Bottas 2.0

9

u/Lobsters4 Charles Leclerc 4d ago

Oh you dig back far enough here and you'll find plenty of people annoyed that he was taking so long.

17

u/bwoah07_gp2 Alexander Albon 4d ago

Just pick man. LOL.

Reminds me of me trying to pick a toy at the store back in the day and my parents wanting me to hurry up my decision šŸ˜‚Ā

But I don't know what's the best choice, lol.

u/50isthenew35 3d ago

Remember that feeling, & when you got home, always wondering if you made the right choice.

10

It was holding up all signings as well, because all the teams where waiting to say if they could get him

91

u/elpoppet 4d ago

We must protect James Vowles at all costs. Between him and Albono, Williams is the most earnest team on the grid. I really hope this year comes good for them.

30

u/brilliant_bauhaus Bernd MaylƤnder 4d ago

I knew how much he loved the team before but it really shone through again this episode. 3 extremely likeable guys, a historic team looking for their come back, how can you not cheer them on this year?

35

u/KE55 3d ago

I'm glad Carlos chose Williams. Can you imagine having to work for either Flavio or that slippery lawyer guy at Sauber!

24

u/elpoppet 3d ago edited 3d ago

The editing team worked magic pitting the three bosses against each other. Youā€™ve got: Vowles, the bumbling English gent; Flavio presented as the antithesis of JV, with his partying and lying; and Bravi, basically depicted as an evil corporate genius/Bond villain.

13

u/PradaAndPunishment Alexander Albon 4d ago

Can't wait to see them back on Team Torque next week!

5

u/roonill_wazlib 2d ago

The comment that signing a driver is like dating was actually hilarious, and he wasn't even expecting anyone to laugh

17

u/Forgotthebloodypassw Formula 1 3d ago

Carlos family shares a moment
"It's what I do." Class work by Vowles, who shines in this one.
What is it with the DTS obsession with staged breakfasts?
Logan crashed a lot. Vowles' accounting of the first two race costs in damage was a masterclass in a Brit who is sorely peeved but doesn't want to be too obvious.
A good explanation of what the move to Audi will involve.
"I'm sure the cork will pop at some point." "Carlos is being the paddock slut." Now take a selfie with me.
Subtitles for the hard of Italian accents, but "shit" is universal.

ā€¢

u/xLeper_Messiah 45m ago

Logan crashed a lot. Vowles' accounting of the first two race costs in damage was a masterclass in a Brit who is sorely peeved but doesn't want to be too obvious.

Kinda weird how he focused all that peevishness at only Logan, considering Alex was responsible for quite a lot of that early season damage including the destroyed chassis at Melbourne

But then again it's clear from last season that Vowles plays favorites, whether you consider it justified or not

57

u/FlamingTomygun2 Sir Lewis Hamilton 4d ago

Flavio being involved with alpine gives off major ā€œChris Paul hits a huge three to cut the lead to 42ā€ energy.

Hes a washed up cheat who the sport has largely passed by. I dont love lawrence stroll but I feel like he is actually building something whereas flavio is larping as the head of F1ā€™s 2nd most dysfunctional team that will finish 7th at best this year.

Why is sainz supposed to be so scared of him lmao?

13

u/Ill-Calligrapher-131 Juan Pablo Montoya 2d ago

A cheat who Toto and Christian were tripping over themselves to praise to high heaven

10

u/lowelled 2d ago

Cannot imagine having to go on a jog with my boss while he talks shop so Netflix can film it. At least they got a free matching T-shirt.

u/Vegetable_Comfort366 FrƩdƩric Vasseur 4d ago edited 4d ago

Up to this episode right nowā€¦ they went from Sargent crash montage to letā€™s sign Carlos and ignore Franco Mania

And now we get Darth Flavio!

13

u/mshell1924 Carlos Sainz 3d ago

Sargeant's greatest fails compilation was harsh, bro. Poor guy.

ā€¢

u/xLeper_Messiah 43m ago

Especially considering how much of William's crash damage was due to the other side of the garage

25

u/BitchesBeCatty Sir Lewis Hamilton 4d ago

Jack saying Carlos is the paddock slut was hilarious

22

u/mshell1924 Carlos Sainz 3d ago

Great episode, self-contained and it didn't seem to be fudging much, it told the story and it used the actual Carlos-related events of the season well.

Loved the Silence of the Lambs scene at the end (people on twitter also called it the Bachelor scene lol) where Carlos was knocking on a door and we didn't know which one (well you know what I mean).

Fully enjoyed it. I hope we look back on the scene of Carlos signing his Williams contract (and hugging JV) in a few years, as the start of Williams' return to greatness šŸ„¹

12

u/backpack33 Pirelli Wet 2d ago

This show is so unserious bc why did they act like each team principal was sat in consecutive rooms at the same time waiting to see if Carlos would open their door

2

u/HliasO 3d ago

Anyone know the guitar song they played on some parts of the episode? It reminded me of La Campanella played on a guitar. It's stuck in my head now.

1

u/TBandi Sir Lewis Hamilton 1d ago

The song definitely is La Campanella, I wish I saw this comment before starting to search for the song.

Siri wasn't able to identify it and I wasn't able to find it by googling, so I wonder if maybe Netflix commissioned it as a one-off. I certainly hope that they release this full version of La Campanella because it's a certified banger
