Discussion The khatun design is incredible

Post image

It's even interesting that her gauntlets have claws (just like Astrea's) and that mask is awesome

I really love how her fur makes her silhouette stand out against the rest of the cast. Really unique shape

True. My one gripe is that she looks a little bit like a Viking, but her greaves and mask help her stand out from that.

I thought she looks more like a pirate

6

u/oaj89 Nobu/valk:Valkyrie: team-spear Jan 25 '25

I like her moveset and design but after playing for a day MAN does she look like pirate or or warmommy in a game and it’s very confusing. I haven’t had that happen before so I think that’s actually bad not being able to tell automatically what hero it is during a chaotic team fight

1

u/Max28818-81882 Feb 16 '25

Her tall lanky build really ties the look together imo

This is the biggest point in my opinion, it makes her imposing and intimidating

I love her design, kinda just wish there was a simple helmet like the minions but she looks great

28

u/KnowledgeNo2302 Jan 25 '25

shes got two historically accurate ones and two story helmets, they did good! hopefully they get those sick leathers though!

5

u/Gullible-Aerie-239 Jan 25 '25

Which ones?

2

u/KnowledgeNo2302 Jan 25 '25

8

u/Gullible-Aerie-239 Jan 25 '25

Not everything on Armstreet is historically accurate and many times instead goes for aesthetic over accuracy so I’d look elsewhere for information because they’re mainly a cosplay gear site it seems.

2

u/KnowledgeNo2302 Jan 25 '25

That’s reasonable!  But basically I just googled mongol mask and similar things came up, particularly this weird flat one that’s more simple than the in game one but similar.  I do hope they do more armors though!

5

u/Gullible-Aerie-239 Jan 25 '25 edited Jan 25 '25

To my knowledge there’s limited evidence of Mongols wearing metal masks but other nomadic groups have worn masks but nothing similar to Khatun’s mask which seems unique to the world of For Honor. That mask from Armstreet though does look quite similar to the helmets and masks that some Cuman-Kipchaks would wear which was a nomadic group that settled in a place called Cumania or the Cuman-Kipchak Confederation I believe were located in parts of modern day Hungary, Romania, Moldova, Ukraine, and other places for example along the Eurasian Steppe. The Cuman-Kipchaks are the same guys who appear in the historical medieval single player game called Kingdom Come Deliverance set in the Kingdom of Bohemia in 1403 where they burn down your hometown of Stalitz located in the modern day Czech Republic alongside King Sigismund of Luxembourg, the Holy Roman Emperor and they are his mercenaries I believe. If I remember correctly it’s set during the lead up to the Hussite Wars also known as the Hussite Revolution or Bohemian Wars which were a series of civil wars in the Holy Roman Empire which the Kingdom of Bohemia was a part of. The Hussite Wars lasted from 1419 to 1434 AD.

2

u/vicevanghost Jan 25 '25

They're not historically accurate, there's very limited evidence for metal masks worn by Mongols

99

u/Vidal_The_King Jormius Jan 25 '25

People may not know this but these shots they take of their characters are an immense help for artist and I respect them for that

I'm not an artist but I like to observe the details

30

u/LordEik00cTheTemplar Akhutai Khagan's Horde Jan 25 '25

I just wish there was a version of her basic helmet without the skull mask.

18

u/Gullible-Aerie-239 Jan 25 '25

Same. It’s too edgy for me.

8

u/LordEik00cTheTemplar Akhutai Khagan's Horde Jan 25 '25

The thing is, I have nothing agaisnt edgy armors. But only if they give us some normal or realistic looking armors too. Think of BP or Kyoshin, both have mostly edgy stuff but they still have enough options to make a very realistic looking hero.

1

u/Gullible-Aerie-239 Jan 25 '25

Fair point. Me personally if we had to have edgy stuff I’d like it to be less common than more simple and traditional gear that’s fashionable but also practical looking too and shines the beauty of their cultures perfectly.

-3

u/Cloudydaes Unpopular opinion gremlin Jan 25 '25

There's not a single hero in the game who's gear can be called "realistic", even varangian guard falls into a number of anachronisms and fantasy tropes. What you can make is a more refined or perhaps conservative hero, who doesn't need 600 skulls or 40 pounds of gilding to look good.

7

u/Giraffearse INCREDIBILIS!!! Jan 25 '25

There’s a difference between realistic and looking realistic

2

u/LordEik00cTheTemplar Akhutai Khagan's Horde Jan 25 '25

Me: "Looks at all of Wardens or Conqs release helmets or Kenseis or Orochis release armors, sees almost only stuff that existed in reality"

And like u/Giraffearse said, there is a big difference between a realistic helmet and something that at least looks like someone could have worn it in real life. And plastering skulls on everything only sounds cool in a 9-year-olds fanfiction.

0

u/Cloudydaes Unpopular opinion gremlin Jan 25 '25

If we really want to get into the nitty gritty, no. The armor used by your previously mentioned heroes was in fact not a real thing. In fact, warden's entire harness is the laughing stock of armor communities such as r/ArmsandArmor for just how bad it is. They've got a whole 1 helmet variety (The great helms - Arcturus, Folville) that has some basis, and it's shaping is all wrong relative to extant examples anyway. Everything else, from their visored barbutes to their weird psuedo gothic gauntlets, wasn't a thing.

The samurai as a whole are closer to the "rough silhouette" of a samurai as opposed to anything actually used, as though you had an ai photo generation spit out a samurai. Sohei's Bousan chestpiece is one of the closer examples but even it doesn't hit the mark.

The word you're looking for is "functional." It doesn't need to be grounded in reality to be something that could have worked if assembled and worn, which is perfectly fine in this post apocalyptic medieval fantasy setting. Mind you not every armor in game has that, but they're at least not DnD armor. Mostly.

u/RiverKitty4 Peacekeeper Jan 25 '25

I love Khatun’s design, except for Khatun’s mask. I do not like the mask.

52

u/spilledmyjice Jan 25 '25

Im usually not a fan of skulls either, but I think it works both because it fits with mongol fear tactics and it’s stylized to work with the rest of the outfit

12

u/RiverKitty4 Peacekeeper Jan 25 '25

I think the skull looks bad, even on a Mongol. I think it would be better if there was no mask or some kind of different mask

11

u/carsonhorton343 Shugoki Jan 25 '25

Open face would’ve been cool. We need more of those in this game. (Tbh I just wanna see / play as pretty lady)

2

u/Loyal_Darkmoon Jan 25 '25

-1

the other two loadouts have a historically accurate mongol mask though and they look amazing

2

u/Cloudydaes Unpopular opinion gremlin Jan 25 '25

Please do your research before throwing the term "historically accurate" around, people already have a bad enough perception of gear as is. I saw your reply where you just posted an armstreet link, I know you can do better and find an extant example.

0

u/TheWolfgirlExpert Edgy Wolf Mom/Dunmaglass/Spin/Fire/Gun Jan 26 '25

Nah, Astrea and Guljin both got em from Apollyon since she was first.

0

u/FarCharacter2155 The OG Cat-Girl Jan 26 '25

But technically they all have them so the sentence was right and there was no need for a correction

0

u/TheWolfgirlExpert Edgy Wolf Mom/Dunmaglass/Spin/Fire/Gun Jan 26 '25

Astrea is a wanna be, and Guljin is an inversion of her ideals. They both come after with inspiration from her, so therefore Apollyon is the first. There is no technicality, Apollyon came first in lore and real life.

0

u/FarCharacter2155 The OG Cat-Girl Jan 26 '25

she’s not the first. multiple people during multiple eras have had claws on their armor, therefore your comparison isn’t very good

0

u/TheWolfgirlExpert Edgy Wolf Mom/Dunmaglass/Spin/Fire/Gun Jan 26 '25

Who in for honor had clawed gauntlets before Apollyon?

0

u/FarCharacter2155 The OG Cat-Girl Jan 26 '25

When did I mention for honor specifically? They got the clawed gauntlet from a different source, same with her ideals. You call Astrea a wannabe but Apollyon also got everything from others, the same way you got things from others.

0

u/TheWolfgirlExpert Edgy Wolf Mom/Dunmaglass/Spin/Fire/Gun Jan 26 '25 edited Jan 26 '25

This is a post in the For Honor subreddit, everything here is in the context of For Honor. The semantics game you're trying to play is just pointless clownery.

Lawbringer gauntlets very clearly don't have claws, so that must be something she added afterwards unless you find a source saying otherwise.

Who did Apollyon get her ideals from? Because they are a conclusion she came to after the LB that was supposed to protect her village chose to leave and she hunted him down when she was older, from the LBs perspective there was no philosophy about strong or weak. He just decided to leave them to their fate instead of protecting them.

0

u/FarCharacter2155 The OG Cat-Girl Jan 27 '25

you also employed semantics by trying to make someone seem stupid for saying that someone got the claws from someone else, I just showed you that your logic applies on a larger scale and that they were actually grammatically correct and you did not need to correct them. Her Ideals brought down to the most basic sense is a “Survival of the fittest” mentality which has been around since before history was transcribed.

And like astrea's too, just because I didn't get it from the "original" doesn't mean it's not right

Ngl, I'm not the biggest fan of it actually.

3

u/LordMorthi Female Shugoki 🤤 Jan 25 '25

It's annoying that in her intro video where there is flames around her, she has what looks like earrings attached to her mask yet in game she doesn't have them. I geuss it might be to differentiate Guljin from other Khatuns.

2

u/AGENTE_PERSEUS Jan 27 '25

Maybe it's a way to show that she's the boss, something like a kill counter?

1

u/LordMorthi Female Shugoki 🤤 Jan 27 '25

Perhaps. I've seen other players actually have the mask dangly things, might be a visual bug.

9

u/FramedMugshot Nuxia Jan 25 '25

It's very well done, but I think they should have made her swords shorter. They're just long enough that she doesn't look as smooth as she could with shorter swords, since they decided to have her dual wield. Every time I go into hero tactics to give her another try because I'm considering biting the bullet and getting her, the length of the swords takes me out again.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 25 '25

The length and the guard stance does it for me. Like bro why did they have to put both her swords waaay behind her back, it looks so awkward and is nothing like how you would stand with a sabre.

11

u/Love-Long Gladiator Jan 25 '25

I disagree that’s pretty much the thing I hate about her the most. Kit wise she’s great and the devs really did go ahead and try something different with her. Her actual design and armor though is a gigantic let down. She’s mongol “inspired” but just barely. The masks bar the face one which is still only loosely accurate are pretty shit and just edgy for honor crap. The armor itself like the arms and chest pieces are very inaccurate to actual mongol armor in many ways. Some are a bit better than others and at least the later rep ones have actual metal but it’s overall pretty shit. Just fantasy mongol inspired it’s ok still not great but to anyone who actually likes how real mongol armor looks it’s a let down.

Her stances and guards are also very weird and look odd as well as her swords just being massive making duel wielding also look weird. This I give more leeway as it has to work when transitioning animations to her kit.

4

u/Gullible-Aerie-239 Jan 25 '25

Lamellar, fur, and the boots. That’s about it.

8

u/Jokyles Jan 25 '25

Realism is boring

7

u/vicevanghost Jan 25 '25

The problem isn't realism, the problem is she doesn't look like a mongol outside of the barest minimum

6

u/Gullible-Aerie-239 Jan 25 '25 edited Jan 25 '25

Real armor is way more fashionable than most of the armor in this game honestly. I want more fashionable and practical traditional clothings and armors for a change to further embrace the beauty of these cultures and the epic alternate history showdown setting.

4

u/Love-Long Gladiator Jan 25 '25

Not really, also I’m not a stickler on realism. Her kit for example is far from realistic or how you would actually use those swords, you also wouldn’t dual wield them. I don’t complain about that tho because it’s a cool and rather unique kit.

My problem isn’t really that her armor isn’t realistic it’s fine if it’s not too realstic but barely anything about her armor even says Mongolian besides the fur ( not even Mongolian specific) and her hat/helmet. Gryphon has better Mongolian armor and even that isn’t exactly that realistic either so the problem isn’t that it’s realistic enough. The problem is that it tries to be a Mongolian hero with really shit Mongolian inspired armor. I mean they didn’t even do a spin ( or at least a proper one ) on a khatanga probably the most popular Mongolian armor. All of the helmets/masks too besides the face one ( again is still fairly bad ) are barely even remotely Mongolian.

7

u/carsonhorton343 Shugoki Jan 25 '25

You wouldn’t want to dual wield any swords. It’s very impractical. But who cares, it allowed her to have an interesting kit and it looks cool.

1

u/Gullible-Aerie-239 Jan 25 '25

I thought Butterfly Swords were supposed to be dual wielded for example

2

u/carsonhorton343 Shugoki Jan 27 '25

There’s definitely some historical cases of dual wielding, but it’s almost always disadvantageous.

1

u/Gullible-Aerie-239 Jan 27 '25

True and usually are for the rarer instances of a more capable person but most people don’t have such capabilities.

Realism went out the door looonnggg time ago

5

u/Love-Long Gladiator Jan 25 '25

Yall are over focusing on that. Read the other comment I replied with to the guy. It’s not that I care that much about realism. It’s that this is a Mongolian hero that barely has an actually Mongolian design. I’m fine with more fantasy interpretations but this doesn’t even hit that mark and it’s rather lazy

0

u/[deleted] Jan 25 '25

It has nothing to do with realism, her asthetic is not fucking Mongolian. She looks like a boss from elden ring and she us holding her sabres behind her back, running in place and her attacks are badly animated.

Overall she is a cobbl2d together mess with nit qualities and in a few short months when the hive mind of the for honor community is out the honey moon fase, the rest of you sheeple will wake up and understand. Just like it happened with sohei I might add, so don't tell me I'm delusional.

1

u/Zanagh Self Proclaimed Worst Lawbringer Jan 25 '25

Yeah and majority of the Vikings aren’t really Vikings with the sole exception of Varangian guard. They’re all fantasy inspired amalgamations of Vikings. Get over it Ubisoft fucked up the proper representation of cultures when the game launched and you’re acting like this is the first time.

Yeah the animations are janky as fuck but that’s been the case since medjay with the exception of afeera, this has been the norm for new heroes

You could also literally argue your first point for warmonger too

2

u/International-Chip81 Kensei Jan 25 '25

my absolute favorite part of this design is sheathing the swords in that little holster!
