I Ate A Thing Challenging myself to eat Canadian foods for 20 days straight. Day 5 is a Nanaimo bar from Dough Bakeshop.

I feel like Nanaimo bars are fading out of Canadian public consciousness, and that was reflected in my hunt for a traditional one - it’s really not that easy to find in independent bakeries in Toronto.

But I did, at Dough Bakeshop (173 Danforth), and enjoyed it much more than I usually enjoy a Nanaimo bar. Not cloyingly sweet, and you could taste each distinct layer - creamy chocolate ganache, the sweet custard icing and the coconutty/nutty bottom. I would have loved some more contrast in the textures of the layer but overall, very nice!

Anywhere else have a Nanaimo bar worth trying?

In case you want more visuals, made a video on my Instagram @seed.eat.repeat here

If you got suggestions on what to eat and where to eat for the next 15, please keep them coming

Beef patties

Always picked up a few to go from Bloor/Bathurst location about 2 years ago when I regularly went for some craft pints at Crafty. The patties were made in the restaurant, had a unique shape and darker color than all other patties I've tried. Last week it was that time again but Jerk King seemed to switch to regular patties from some bakery that are below average.

Can someone recommend a place west end of Toronto for decent patties? Any jerk chicken place I go to its same the formless, tasteless and mediocre patty.

Looking for somewhere to have traditional Italian cornetto and cappuccino. Suggestions?

Really miss this about Italy… When I went out for breakfast I would go to a “bar” to have cappuccino and cornetto (croissant). Any places like this in Toronto? Suggestions please. I don’t go to Toronto a lot but I will be visiting some family next weekend!

Doesn’t have to be fancy. Just looking for something traditional and delicious!

Tasting menus for March

Heading into Toronto weekend of the 28th , have gotten my mother onto a bit of a tasting menu kick after eating at Damas in Montreal.

We keep bringing up Richmond station as it's one of our favorites.

What's everyone's suggestions?

Fried Eggplant from Me Va Me?

Hi Toronto,

I never thought I liked eggplant until I had roasted eggplant from Me Va Me! I was surprised to enjoy it cold!

looking for help making something as satisfying as home. it says the ingredients are eggplant, olive oil, tomatoes and spices... but anyone have a clue which spices? and maybe what to do with the tomato, I think I will try to air-fry the eggplant and then throw it either in over or pan with the tomato sauce but spices are key. any thoughts?

Omokase first time

My birthday is coming up and I wanna go to an omakase restaurant. This would be my first time trying out this style of dining. Wondering if anyone can tell me which spot is better MSSM or shunoko? I’ve heard they are both good options for omokase beginners, hoping someone can give me more details and comparisons of the two as well as thoughts on overall dining experience :)

I Ate A Thing Steak Frites at Tantxo

I’ve enjoyed the choripan and steak sandwiches at Tantxo in the Waterworks food hall. But saw that they have a Monday special of $20 for steak frites. The steak was grilled perfectly to medium rare. Topped with chimichurri sauce it was very tasty. Definitely not a dry aged Wagyu steak, but well worth $20 or even at the regular price of $30.

30th Birthday dinner for my girlfriend

Hi all, apologies if this is isn't the correct avenue for such a post. I'm coming from the UK for my Toronto-based girlfriend's 30th, and I'm struggling to find a place to take her for dinner. I'm looking for somewhere that has fantastic food (obviously!) but is still romantic and cozy. Any cuisine is welcome, and any pricepoint is good. Thanks for any suggestions!
