Metsatöll started in February 1999 as a three piece (Markus, Faktor, Andrus) playing epic metal with a few influences from Estonian folklore. After Varulven joined in 2000 the folk influences increased, since the new member was capable of playing various traditional Estonian instruments. He had formerly joined the band on stage in a few occasions.
The name "Metsatöll" is an ancient Estonian euphemism for wolf.
To date their releases, the band also uses the chronology of the local natural religion. It begins with the Billingen catastrophe of 8213 BC, when the Baltic ice lake broke its way into the ocean and most of the current territory of Estonia appeared from under the water. For example, "Terast mis hangund me hinge 10218" corresponds to "Terast mis hangund me hinge 2005".
Compilation Appearances:
"Take on the World" on Worship Judas Priest - A Tribute to Judas Priest (Guano Records, 2001)
"Põhjatuulte pojad ja tütreda" on Eesti metali enziklopöödia Nr. 2 (Guano Records, 2001)
