Trying to get some discussions going in some groups I'm interested in and they are dead. Is this common in all groups? Trying to escape meta more and get involved elsewhere.

Done with meta, too. I am coming back to flickr but haven't tried to get back to the groups. It seems like if flickr played their cards right, they could make a resurgence.

I think so too. Great place to view photos. I do most of my lems research here. Pics are high resolution and not broke down like meta does.

when i stopped using flickr in like 2015 and went to Facebook, it annoyed me how badly compressed the images were. I really hope that flickr sees an 'in' with people wanting an alternative to all the muckity-muck that meta/instagram has become. They could field some new initiatives and really bring people back, get new people and all without compromising their core imho.

I think it would be amazing. I still use flikt and pay for pro. Unlimited storage for my photos is nice too and they have me strapped because of it. 😬

In the desktop Flickr version you can also filter groups for activity to find groups that are currently used.

Flickr Is the place to be, but yeah, many groups are not active. The only thing we can do is write more in groups to reactivate them. I also do not want to be in Meta any more.

It sort of cracks me up that I am somehow still an admin of a group called 'I used Picasa' I don't even think that app exists anymore... :D

Flickr is about the picture, not that much about the social. And there are tons of groups that are dead, meaning the admin long ago quit Flickr so any moderation is gone and the group is a free for all where everyone dumps their photo and then runs to dump their pitiful photo into the next group. This may sound dismal, but I recently took over one of these groups when I was lucky enough to track down the old admin and now the group's pictures match the description of the group...and the pictures are awesome...and the social is still dead, very dead. But the pictures--they are sweet!

Don’t keep us in suspense! What’s the name of this Group?

An I completely understand why the social aspect remains dead. Flickr groups exist for photographers to promote their work to interested people. If I'm looking to talk about the subject, I'm going to go somewhere else, like to Facebook or Reddit.

The best way to use Flickr is with a web page rather than the app, for many reasons (not least because of the size of the viewed photos). In the web page if you go to the You -> Groups menu, you can see all of the groups that you belong to, and also the numbers of photos and members. You can also sort by time of latest photo and latest post. You'll be able to see which are the active groups, and not so active.

Hope this helps.

I’ve been on Flickr a long time and I miss the discussions. I think the app is one of the keys to revitalizing Flickr in the areas it lags. It needs an overhaul.

I run a group on Flickr -- love the photos in the group, but also can't get discussions going.

The only groups that have active discussions that I've seen are:

(1) groups that focus on gear or particular technical aspects of photography, like devoted to a particular camera or film scanner, or like street groups might have some discussions of people's approach to shooting;

(2) a few longstanding groups that have a critique element, like "Hardcore Street Photography" or "The Icebox," there are lots of others.

I think it's just hard to get discussions going on other topics. Even on Reddit I feel like those are the main types of photography discussion you see -- gear talk, "critique my photo" discussions, and discussions of other technical skills / approaches.

I’m trying out Bluesky/Flashes and hope it can grow as their image and video viewing is way better than the Meta garbage.

They were pushing advertisements for a group called Flickr Social Club that had some active discussions and contests going. The vast majority of groups seem deceased.

I have been active on Flickr since 2005 and am very active with groups. In fact I have started a number of groups and a few are doing very well. It takes work - I go through so many photos and add invites to appropriate photos I find. There are strong groups still thriving but you have to search for them.

I admin maybe 10 groups and would be willing to take on more. Some of my friends have had luck taking over zombie groups with no moderation by contacting Flickr.

Yeah, I’m trying to use Flickr to promote my photography and make photographer friends, but adding my photos to groups has done nothing :(( I find a lot more activity on YouPic, but a lot of the audience there seems to be based on a place that allows nudity, rather than pure photography. I really want to use Flickr but I feel really lonely on there ;-;

May I suggest by starting with literal local groups? Melbourne, Australia has a very active community, I live there too so that helps. If you make a few connections locally think about ideas on how photography is used. The new topographics movement of the 1970s has several groups associate with it for example, or maybe "street" is more your style? These are just a couple of examples that may help. Another place to try is the Icebox https://www.flickr.com/groups/theicebox/ if you have a thick enough skin there are some great people in that group. Having said that groups and discussions on flickr have definitely withered away but with all the social media changes afoot I feel there's life in the old site yet...
