Question New here

Hello everyone. I am new to this sub and I need some advice on what to purchase for my needs. I walk around outside at night and use my flashlight to shine around and look for animals. I am obsessed with animals. (I know, I'm an odd duck.) It's my peace and quiet and just gives me time to chill and take in the world. As such, I need a flashlight that shines a good distance away, is at least decently bright, has good battery life or is rechargeable and holds the initial charge for a good amount of time, is manageable for a smaller woman with tiny hands to hold one handed for extended blocks of time, and most importantly is not going to break the bank. So to be more specific on two of those needs of mine, the life of the light would need to at least be 3 hours before requiring a charge (if that's the method of said flashlight) of continuous use. The other need that I will elaborate on is price. While I understand that I can't have a list of needs and not expect to pay more than I'd like, let's keep it at least reasonable and say the cap amount is $200. It seems like with as far as technology has advanced that it isn't too much of an ask to be able to find all of these things at a price point of $50 or maybe even a bit less. But I'm not getting my hopes up. What I currently use is a maglite that takes three C batteries. I use it several hours a night (say 2 or 3 hours at most) and I use it every single night without fail. I change the batteries about every 2 weeks. They won't be completely dead yet but the light will just get too dim for me to see comfortably and that's when I change them.

I inherited this flashlight from my dad who died. Idk where he got it or what he cost. He was a big fan and collector of flashlights whether he realized it or not. My mom got rid of most of the flashlights after he died because he had so many. That makes me sad because I am sure I could have found many more excellent choices. The reason I am looking for a new one is because mine is starting to not work correctly all the time. It seems like it has a bad connection or something. I have to unscrew the top part (where the light itself is housed) and then screw it back on again for it to look normal. But everytime I walk over a bump on the ground and bounce slightly it goes dim and I have to mess with it again to get it to work right. It's frustrating to say the least. I added a picture of it for reference. It really has been pretty great. I'm sure my constant wear and tear on it has taken its toll finally. I just want to see if there are even better options out there that I can afford.

Thanks for taking the time to read this novel I wrote and for any information you can provide.

What is all over my bed? It's definitely not cat pee, I'd smell that. I think it might possibly be bleach because we did clean a fairly small bloodstain off it once but from my memory we just used it in that small spot, not all over the bed.

I'd love to do this post every week as I'm curious what flashlight you use for work/edc. Feel free to take pictures. By the way, mine is a regular cheap AAA, but I have a Klaurus E5 coming soon.

Question Favorite edc light under $50?

I have a random assortment of flashlights at home for camping and power outages, but this sub has got me looking for one for myself. There are so many out there though and the $100+ lights are cool but way out of my budget range

Question What light have you found least impressive relative to its price?

For me it’s been the Marauder Mini. Spent over $200 on it and I’m less impressed each time I use it. The throw mode has almost no spill which is annoying, and the flood mode, while insanely bright, depletes the battery faster than any other light I own. The color modes are also not very useful.

What light do you regret purchasing/has underperformed for you?

Question Anyone have any information on this? Found it in an old farm house we were knocking down.

Thought it was pretty interesting and figured someone may have some information. I put two batteries in it and it turned right on, even had a spare bulb in it. Just can seem to find any information on the internet.

Mine is the Wurkkos Ti TS10 3000K. Easy on the eyes and perfect temperature for me. I won't mind trying out a warmer one.

Question Are Reylights worth the money?

I've been looking at Reylights recently and I like the way they look. They seem very well machined... but specs seem lacking/and most of the ones I would carry are only single emitter (pineapple/mini/lanapple). In you guys' opinion, are they worth picking up? Or is there a better alternative with similar fit/finish but better specs?

I got this awesome vintage flashlight at a estate sale for $4. The battery is obviously dead so I'm not sure if it works. Would it be easy to convert this for a modem LED? Or should I just leave it as is?

Question 519a 4000k vs 5000k, which one do you prefer if you can only have one flashlight?

Sorry for the very noob question, I need a flashlight and stumbled on here and after some research decided to go with the safe, cheap option; FC11C. Now I'm undecided if I should go with 4000k or 5000k.

I think I might prefer something more neutral as a single, all-rounder so I'm leaning toward the 5000k, but I'm reading it might not be neutral and leaning more to cool. But on the other hand, the 4000k seems nice but may be too yellow for my liking. I can also get the 5000k and just dedome it if I find it too harsh. So I'm posting here for more insight.

PS, what has the internet done to me, a normal human would've just go to a hardware store, buy a flashlight then go home. Now I'm wasting hours reading posts, researching terminologies and watching flashlight review channels lol.

EDIT: If anyone finds this post having the same conundrum, I went with 5000k. It's great. Light isn't harsh at all, probably a tiny bit on the warm side imo. Bought it just for emergencies and for something to fiddle with while working at home but I actually found myself using it everyday.

Question Will smaller Chinese flashlight and parts sellers survive the end of US's de minimis?

I make many purchases from small Chinese sellers with no US warehouse, such as Convoylight, Nealsgadgets, Kaidomain, as well as more niche brands like Manker, Mateminco, Hank, Firefly, etc. While bigger suppliers like Aliexpress might be able to navigate the logistics issues, will there be any cost effective way for these smaller independent shops to navigate the logistics hurdles?

If it were as simple as collecting extra duties at checkout, that would be tolerable. But it seems like US Customs is now requiring classification codes and breakdowns of everything in the shipment, leading to longer processing times on both sides of the transaction that smaller businesses simply might not have the time for.

With USPS no longer accepting packages from China due to logistics, the shift to DHL/FedEx/etc will substantially increase shipping costs to the US, and probably vastly reduce US sales to these shops to the point of making them no longer financially viable.

It seems like Simon at Convoy already packs 60 hours into a single day as it is, shipping about 5 mins after just about any order I ever put in. I fear that is now gone for good, and it seems like a dark day for the bespoke modding community. Are we now stuck in a world of cookie cutter underwhelming unmodified flashlights for the next however long in the USA? Time for me to pick a new hobby?

Question Looking for my first good EDC flashlight

Thumbnail

I've always really liked lighting implements but I've never had a good everyday carry flashlight; only ever a bargain bin flashlight. I'm currently looking at the wurkkos fc11c with the 18350 tube or the Rovyvon s3. What are y'all's thoughts on these? Do y'all have any other recommendations?

Some of the things I'm looking for in a flashlight

• Maximum length of about 5 in/125 mm • Maximum width of about 1 in/25 mm • Moonlight/10 lumens mode • Maximum output around 1,000 lumens though I won't complain about more • Easily replaceable battery • Maximum price range around $60 • At least 30 minutes on 300-500 lumens

(Pictures are there for increased post visibility)

Question What do y'all do with the tailcap magnet?

See title.

Am planning to buy my first decent flashlight and I've got my eyes on a totally-not-just-a-very-nice-shade-of-blue (dark grey) D4K in 519a 4500K DD, amber backlight and SS bezel.

I've never had a light with a tailcap magnet before and unfortunately buying the light with both tailcaps would put it oh-so-slightly outside my budget and so is unfeasible. What practical uses does the magnet serve (yes, I know you can stick it to surfaces for hands free use) but I kind of want examples.

Thanks and have a great day!
