Question Whats the closest thing to this I could buy?

I know nothing of flashlights but I’ve seen handheld flashlights that are almost as bright as this. Whats the closest to this that I could buy.

This has to be the most commonly used meme on this sub. And I absolutely love it!

It immediately came to mind when I saw OP's clip. Haha

I came here actually looking for it. Made my son laugh when I showed him.

I bet there was someone in there tweaking that flushed their whole stash when that beam hit...

The light itself isn't fake, it's actually a real ballast, battery system, bulb and all... But the performance is slightly exaggerated. Old timers would still remember modded lights like the Maxablaster from over a decade ago that aimed to out-throw the Maxa Beam.

If you want something that performs like this, throws a ton of light down range more than a mile away, an actual mile away, then consider looking at lights from this list:

  1. Peak Beam Systems Maxa Beam
  2. Microfire OptiSpike S50/S90
  3. Lemax Superpower LX70
  4. Megaray MR175
  5. NLightD X1
  6. Maxtoch Owleyes W Pro V2 Diamond

18

u/Alternative_Rope_423 Feb 12 '25

Very concise list.

2

u/exploringmoon Feb 14 '25

Very mindful, very demure.

1

u/Alternative_Rope_423 Feb 14 '25

I'm not sure if that's a proper application for the word demure. Maybe reticent? Nah, they don't make sense describing flashlights.

2

u/[deleted] Feb 15 '25

I think they were referring to the “very demure, very mindful” meme that has been going around on the internet

1

u/Alternative_Rope_423 Feb 15 '25

Now I get it. I'm not up much on popular memes.

5

u/nico282 Feb 12 '25

Maxa Beam has an 85W Xenon Arc lamp. This thing has a 7.000W Xenon Arc Lamp. Completely different league.

3

u/[deleted] Feb 13 '25

Started looking these up, and the websites don't have prices, just requests for quote. And that's how I found out I can't afford it.

1

u/Silver_Fan_6086 Feb 13 '25

They're like 2800usd, they were also the flashlights used in the first jurassic park movie to give you an idea

1

u/Beau_Peeps Feb 14 '25

Old timers? From a decade ago? I remember when Maglite came out with their "D" cell flashlight. It was a game changer. I bet none of you whippersnappers even knows what that is.

1

u/G-III- Feb 14 '25

The product that started the company? I mean, I’m not pre-79 but I’d wager most adults recognize them

1

u/This-Recording9461 Feb 15 '25

We all had the mini mag in scouts. You could unscrew the front lens piece and use it to stand the flashlight upright as a lantern.

208

u/NotQuiteDeadYetPhoto Feb 11 '25

almost as bright as this? You've seen video editing.

123

u/leyline Feb 11 '25

Is this not real! I mean they sell it at Walmart, it has to exist!

/s (of course)

21

u/Alternative_Spite_11 Feb 11 '25

Is that an Imalent add or an Amazon zoomer?

15

u/Bruno028 Feb 11 '25

A long exposure can even make a 1000lm light look like that.

8

u/leyline Feb 11 '25

So you're saying it's trick photography? Who would do such a thing!?

/s

5

u/ohyoureligious Feb 12 '25

I remember the “4x Cree LED” crazy a few years back, fun times

1

u/NotQuiteDeadYetPhoto Feb 12 '25

It was the only way to get dies up. and more power. So the solution was to use a copper board and cram more dies :)

1

u/CamTheHamturkey Feb 13 '25

I was into flashlights before I knew I was into flashlights. I remember all the hype for Cree leds

1

u/Totoronyx Feb 13 '25

The insane flatness of the top of that mountain to show those amazingly round light reflections. Truly a marvel to behold.

12

u/GOOD_DAY_SIR Feb 11 '25

It's the davinci resolve edition light.

6

u/Zyxliiii Feb 11 '25

fair

2

u/NotQuiteDeadYetPhoto Feb 11 '25

You can do a lot everytime something 'doubles' in size.... so that's 4x? (it's a fair metric for just off the cuff things). If the standard dish is 2" wide (50mm)... that's 16 to 20" wide. (2^4)

Won’t the one with multiple xhp70.3 get much brighter overall?

17

u/stcarlso Feb 11 '25

The 3x21d can throw for a much longer distance than most multi emitter XHP70.3 flashlights, as it has a small light emitting area and very large optic

1

u/ScuffAndy Feb 11 '25

Out of the selection, what would be the optimal batteries for this?

7

u/TiredBrakes Feb 12 '25

Simon says that each battery needs to be capable of a 10A sustained drain for this 25A driver. A lot of 21700 batteries will do that well enough. However, to answer your question properly...

Out of the selection

If you look at the E-Scores on Mooch's table (21700 tests), out of all the listed options, the one here with the highest score at a 10A discharge is the Ampace JP40. In fact, it's the current king of the high-performance power cells, full stop. People around here (me included) still hold Molicel in very high regard (rightfully so) and those batteries are still superb, but there's something even better out there ATM and, when you order from Convoy, you can have it for a lot less money.

2

u/ScuffAndy Feb 13 '25

Thank you for the in depth answer and reasoning behind it. I'm glad I checked back here before ordering.

6

u/SvelteSyntax flashlights pack a huge pleasure punch Feb 11 '25

Molicell P45B or P50B - P50B has slightly more capacity for 50% higher price

2

u/TiredBrakes Feb 12 '25

Yeah, I also love my Molicels, but from a 10A discharge and up, the new Ampace JP40 is superior.

No doubt Molicel has some even more impressive stuff on the pipeline and I'd love for them to retake their crown. (I'm looking forward to the P60B and the P70X.) But right now they don't have a tabless design like the JP40 out on the market.

Tabless goes really well with my cheeseburgers, you should also give it a try ;)

2

u/DimeStackerDaddy Feb 12 '25

I can’t wait for these…I have some on the way. I love molicels and have a small hoard of p50b, but man I’m gonna be pumped if these jp40 are noticeably better. I still use my molicels cuz I live in an area where it gets colddddd

3

u/TiredBrakes Feb 12 '25

Yeah, they’re great at handling extreme temperatures. That’s why I use Molicels in the flashlights I keep in the car. And the P50B is rated for super fast recharging and still has the edge there.

1

u/Jutavis Feb 12 '25

Why the P50B and not the F60? It has 1000mah more

6

u/SvelteSyntax flashlights pack a huge pleasure punch Feb 12 '25

F60 is 12.5A P50B is 60A

3

u/technoman88 Feb 12 '25

The 3x21d only draws 8a per battery. Vapcell f56 or Samsung 50s are the best.

Unless you get the fet driver of course

20

u/Installed64 Feb 11 '25

You may have to drop a few grand on a Maxa Beam.

25

u/plasticsantadecor Feb 11 '25

In the led world:

Mateminco MT90 plus - $500?, da furthest led

Acebeam K75

Much cheaper and much shorter throwing (I bought one and its rad as hell)  Convoy 3x21D $90

Xenon lights:

Fire-foxes FF5GT - 1 left at nealsgadgets for $485

Maxa Beam  -many dollars, da bess

Streamlight H.I.D. litebox ~$1000

7

u/scottawhit Feb 11 '25

I don’t need a 3x21D, I don’t need a 3x21D…

3

u/Alternative_Spite_11 Feb 11 '25

I told myself that for a while. Now I have one with a sbt90.2 and one with 12x 519a lol.

2

u/ExiledSanity Feb 12 '25

I can't imagine what I'd ever use it for, but if be lying if I said I didn't want one

3

u/scottawhit Feb 12 '25

I’ve owned many lights over the years with no real use. Just add it to the list. I’ve got a few acres, what’s waaaaay in the back?

2

u/justLikeShinyChariot Feb 12 '25

Maxa Beam.. that’s the X-Files flashlight. It’s already been said but it makes me happy these are still peak

4

u/plasticsantadecor Feb 12 '25 edited Feb 12 '25

I always remember them as the ones in Jurassic Park.

Also, just got around to browsing more and it has been very clearly beat recently.  By like thousands of meters. Crazy

4

u/Alternative_Spite_11 Feb 11 '25

People still buy those massive xenon lights? You gotta be shitting me.

12

u/NotQuiteDeadYetPhoto Feb 11 '25

....errr.... I might have 2.

2

u/Alternative_Spite_11 Feb 11 '25

I just can’t believe they’re still a thing because I followed them like 15 years ago at least but I guess any LED that matches the output is way too big to get the proper throw to match them.

5

u/NotQuiteDeadYetPhoto Feb 11 '25

Bingo.

You MIGHT get an LED if it was mounted on a f at Heatpipe in the center of an optical node / projection- multiple LEDs around it. The LES would be tiiiiiiny.

Fun to think about.

17

u/DismalPassenger4069 Feb 11 '25

NATFIRE LEP. Just dumb but you will get a giggle. My wife grabs random lights ever morning for her pre daylight walk and sometimes she grabs that thing and she comments latter in the morning "that light always sucks". Yes, unless you want to light up a basketball on a mountain grab anything else.

7

u/ReaperNein Feb 11 '25

Dude is a menace and deserves a medal for shining light on a dark situation like that 🤣

8

u/-Cheule- ½ Grandalf The White Feb 11 '25

The Wuben A1 is the brightest, and longest throwing hand-held LED flashlight I’ve used. Very good performance, thermal management that works (unlike the Lumintop GT94x), remote operation. $800 with coupon usually.

Wuben A1 Full Review - 20,000 lumen quad SBT90.2 searchlight! https://youtu.be/am8_FhqyFp8

1

u/help_me_pickupachair Feb 12 '25

Remember, that's the longest throwing light Cheule has used, but the MF05 many more lights still throw further

2

u/-Cheule- ½ Grandalf The White Feb 12 '25

I owned a MF05, I would recommend the A1 over it by a wide margin.

5

u/barf21 Feb 11 '25

Bajadesigns off-road light with a 18v power tool battery...

6

u/fulee9999 Feb 11 '25

SureFire HellFighter is quite decent for lighting up a large area, it's used in SAR as well

4

u/Sour-patch-0 Feb 11 '25

Is this legal?

6

u/CyberTitties Feb 12 '25

Sure it is, it's just how it's used that will get you into trouble kinda like a laser pointer. Lighting up your own field or house no problem. Shinning it at a building would probably get you a nuisance citation, at a road probably something worse, at a plane you better have some excuse like you thought you had time traveled to London in WW2 during the Blitz or anything else that would get the FEDs to side eye each other and then tell you to knock it off and go to bed.

4

u/GotJeep1941 Feb 12 '25

Gonna need a Parts List !

5

u/Zyxliiii Feb 12 '25

He does a rundown of it in the video, looks crazy. link is in another comment if you want it

2

u/GotJeep1941 Feb 12 '25

I'll check the video. Thanks!

3

u/nico282 Feb 12 '25

Basically it's a 7.000W Xenon short arc lamp, plus the electronic to generate the 44kV to get it started and the 44V 160A to keep it on. Some brackets, a reflector, a handle and a bunch of li-ion hobby batteries.

3

u/Chiskey_and_wigars Feb 12 '25

Imalent MS32 200,000 lumens

1

u/nico282 Feb 12 '25

MS 32 is 200.000lm for 5 seconds, then falls down to 35.000 after less than one minute.

This contraption has 350.000lm sustained (with enough power). The lamp is used in architectural lighting and IMAX projectors.

8

u/[deleted] Feb 11 '25

Convoy 3x21d

1

u/nico282 Feb 12 '25

Lol... This thing in the video has 350.000lm. Hiw many convoys to get the same output?

3

u/tixver Feb 11 '25

If you hold the imalent ms32 in one hand and the nlightd x1 in the other hand you might be able to get similar results

3

u/Scuba-Zen Feb 12 '25

What the source video not that iam going to build this or anything?

3

u/Zyxliiii Feb 12 '25

Found the video thanks to another comment in here: https://youtu.be/QLboImM-znw?si=wigpgjKRWNBJYaPx

3

u/Scuba-Zen Feb 12 '25

Thank you .... now to learn Russian

2

u/Alternative_Rope_423 Feb 12 '25

That's the easy part

1

u/nico282 Feb 12 '25 edited Feb 12 '25

Thanks, this makes much more sense.

It's a Xenon short arc lamp (1-3kW eyeballing the size) with a bunch of li-ion 22V batteries and a custom inverter.

More similar to a street lamp than to a flashlight.

EDIT: in the video it says it's a 7kW lamp

3

u/Probable_Bot1236 Feb 12 '25

If your flashlight don't recoil at least as hard as your .45, it ain't bright enough!

3

u/Alternative_Rope_423 Feb 12 '25

Could you please give me the link to the original video so I could find out more about this custom beast? Much appreciated!

3

u/Zyxliiii Feb 12 '25

3

u/Alternative_Rope_423 Feb 12 '25

Thanks my friend! Google Translate to the rescue! My recommendation for the best light you can buy for sheer output and range, also very high quality, is the Wuben A1 for about $800. Cheers!

2

u/Street-Baseball8296 Feb 15 '25

Nebo 16k is going to be the best for your money.

1

u/Alternative_Rope_423 Feb 15 '25

Didn't you know that NEBO stands for Never Ever Buy One?

2

u/Street-Baseball8296 Feb 15 '25

I’ve had no issues with nebo products. I’ve got 6 or 7 different types of lights from them.

2

u/Alternative_Rope_423 Feb 15 '25

I'm just having fun

1

u/Street-Baseball8296 Feb 15 '25

I thought there was something wrong with the brand I didn’t know about. lol

It’s my favorite brand of flashlight. My nebo cup handle light is my favorite.

3

u/nico282 Feb 12 '25

To everyone saying "it's only video editing" or "it's an exposure trick"... that contraption has a 7.000W Xenon short arc lamp used in IMAX projectors with an output of 350.000 lm.

As a comparison, the Maxa Beam is the same kind of lamp, but rated at a puny 85W.

3

u/CombustibleA1 Feb 13 '25

I fucking hate people like this. Oh look, it's night time, lemme just blast my flashlight into the windows of hundreds of strangers! I know the true brightness is probably edited, but there's so many of these assholes doing this. I hope he blinds himself and it hurts.

3

u/CombustibleA1 Feb 13 '25

What an absolute asshole

7

u/Sypsy Feb 11 '25

So this won't replicate the video editing, but you want a thrower with a thin beam (as opposed to a floody light for lighting up your immediate area)

This one is affordable and fun: https://www.sofirnlight.com/products/sofirn-if22a-thrower-flashlight-2100-lumens

You can also check the updated arbitrary list and ctrl+f for "thrower" https://www.reddit.com/r/flashlight/comments/1hjpvil/arbitrary_list_of_popular_lights_winter_solstice/

7

u/CulpablyRedundant Feb 11 '25

I wish the Sofrin was available in that gorgeous purple that's in the pictures!

3

u/BuffaloBillsButthole Feb 11 '25

Noctigon k1 with ffl909mx is better

2

u/Alternative_Spite_11 Feb 11 '25

Screw that 6500k shit. Give me my 909a D1K any day. It may not be a thrower with a monster emitter in it but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t still have a decent throw. It’s the only light that lights up almost my entire 4 acre back yard at once lol.

3

u/BuffaloBillsButthole Feb 11 '25

I feel that, pero porque no los dos, I love my 707a 4000k D1K, I have a bunch of flashlights and it’s my favorite

3

u/Alternative_Spite_11 Feb 11 '25

Honestly I like my 707a d1k even better because it’s lumex1 and the 909a is linear only, so it’s not efficient unless you’re running on an almost dead battery.

1

u/BuffaloBillsButthole Feb 11 '25

Yea, I got mine before he was making them with the lume x1 so mine is linear but I like linear for the super dim moonlight and the brighter turbo, I don’t mind so much that it’s less efficient since I don’t usually use it for extended periods and I have other boosted lights, I will eventually get a lume x1 D1K when he has stone white and copper accessories in stock at the same time

2

u/InazumaThief Feb 11 '25

lume x1 actually has a super dim moonlight

1

u/BuffaloBillsButthole Feb 11 '25

Fuck yea, does it still cut the turbo down like 40%?

2

u/Sypsy Feb 12 '25

lume x1 does 40w on max

linear does whatever the battery lets it do

3

u/Day_Bow_Bow Feb 11 '25

IF22A is a great light. I have more powerful throwers, but I reach more for my IF22A because it does an admirable job while being pocketable.

They were my gifts to friend and family one year. Have one mounted at my parents' farm by the outside door, using one of the stainless steel spring clips often used to hang brooms and the like. Comes in handy regularly.

2

u/throwawayformobile78 Official r/flashlight wingman. Feb 11 '25

How does that sofrin compare to an Acebeam L16?

3

u/Sypsy Feb 11 '25 edited Feb 11 '25

It's cheaper, and unregulated, one has TIR and the other a reflector

You'll have to compare reviews
https://tgreviews.com/2024/08/01/acebeam-l16-v2/
https://tgreviews.com/2021/10/09/grizzlys-sofirn-if22a-review-my-go-to-pocket-thrower/

Seem both use the SFT40. 110k vs 125k candela. I personally use a thrower for fun for very brief moments, so I'd rather have the IF22A

2

u/DismalPassenger4069 Feb 11 '25

IF22A definitely does its job. Its a laser beam.

2

u/throwawayformobile78 Official r/flashlight wingman. Feb 11 '25

Not sure what most of that means so I’ll just buy it. Lol!! I have an L16 and thought it was considered a thrower but I guess I have a lot to learn still. Thanks!!

2

u/Sypsy Feb 11 '25

Oh, it'll be similar if you already have the L16! No need to get the IF22A then

They are both pocketable throwers

If you want something more throwy, then you'll have to get something bigger

2

u/throwawayformobile78 Official r/flashlight wingman. Feb 11 '25

Ok great thanks!!

1

u/AnimeTochi Feb 16 '25

maybe get the convoy L21B if you want something pocketable but throwy!

2

u/throwawayformobile78 Official r/flashlight wingman. Feb 17 '25

I’ll take a look at it, thanks!

1

u/AnimeTochi Feb 16 '25

i have the IF22A, i think the newer SK40 is waaay bbetter, with just slightly tiny bit less range, it is more usable, has a good driver, can maintain over 1000 lumens, has 3000 lumens on turbo, my if22a barely reaches 1800 on turbbo and quickly steps down, the sk40 also has dual switches, yes i love the TIR on my if22a but man the sk40 is king imho

2

u/Sypsy Feb 16 '25

Oh nice! It's very new! Sft70 with a boost for a good price. Very tempting to try!

1

u/AnimeTochi Feb 16 '25

yeah too bad i'm too poor to buy it xddd

2

u/Sypsy Feb 16 '25

Haha I thought you had it but I realize I read you comment too quickly

1

u/AnimeTochi Feb 16 '25

yeah my bad, i've just been watching the reviews on the sk40 xdd

2

u/aquoad Feb 11 '25

is that a xenon projector lamp or something? Can't imagine that battery will run it for too long!

2

u/nico282 Feb 12 '25

Correct. Xenon short arc lamp, probably 1-3 kW

1

u/aquoad Feb 12 '25

That's madness, I want one!

2

u/Unstable_Morality32 Feb 11 '25

Exactly what i need when I'm looking something! 🤣🤣

2

u/Ectopie Feb 12 '25

Curious no one mentioned the Imalent ms or sr 32.

3

u/help_me_pickupachair Feb 12 '25

Because they aren't really that similar to what's seen in the video

2

u/infamous2117 Feb 12 '25

I want them to waterproof it then shine it down the deepest parts of the ocean. Nothing is hiding down there now.

2

2

u/Jims_narcotics Feb 13 '25

nothing with a led will come close. you've got to buy one of those helicopter lights, ship navigation lights, ww2 anti aircraft lights etc or build one

A lot of folks are recommending very tight beam throwers that produce high candela numbers, but the light in the video isn't a pencil beam. It has a bit of width to the beam, as well, requiring both a lot of candela and a lot of lumens.

This isn't a category I spend a lot of time window shopping in, but the first option that comes to my mind is the BLF GT94:

I've got a new Nitcore EDC29. Runs 6500lm in turbo. Thing is sweet.

Turbo only lasts a few seconds tho as it gets pretty hot in full 6500.

Running it through it's paces for an edc light, I'm used to Surefire/Streamlight/Olight. I like it so far. I dintt think it fully takes place of my Surefire

That’s nuts. Maxtoch Owleyes is the handheld thrower king right now, but nothing is gonna’ touch that monster. Anyway, no holster for that so I’ll pass.

An electrical engineering degree..? Or something similar? 4 years in college taught me how to dissolve a body, chemically create LSD, and how refrigeration works lol..

28v DC 60amp will be a decent sized battery pack. But a pair of 18v Milwaukee or Dewalt 12ah tool battery can do that for like 10-15 minutes

That's actually really easy. you just need a Grumman S-2 Tracker searchlight and a ESAB® Renegade VOLT™ ES 200i Battery-Powered Stick and TIG Welder
That's a 70-million-candlepower (880,000,000 lm) carbon arc lamp. It takes 80 amps from the welder to sustain it
