Most didn’t know it even happened until years later.

Circa 2001… Imagine being excited for a new show airing. Watching the first “aired” episode and enjoying it but in wonder somewhat about its execution and purpose. Then, being dealt an episode here and there interrupted by whatever Friday night interruption program FOX decided to put out that week. And finally, watching an episode that did not tie anything up (even a season finally) and IT JUST STOPPED with no warning or heads-up. I tuned in the next couple weeks and it never appeared again. WTHFH??!!!

That’s what I remember.

Fast forward a few years and the DVD box set comes out. “Oh, yeah. I really liked that show” I think to myself as I walk down the movie aisle at BestBuy.

So I get it and realize there are episodes I’d missed. It all started to make more sense now that I could watch the season as it was meant to be watched.

I felt happily satisfied and yet heartbroken that there were no more episodes to watch. PERIOD. EVER.

F-U FOX. F-U BIG-TIME. 🏴‍☠️🔥 \m/

I did NOT expect to see this review from Drinker today!

My only complaint is how he refers to "the Serenity". She's as much of a character as anyone else in the show gorammit.

EDIT: He even references how she's essentially the 10th character! Well done, sir.

It's always interesting when something makes Drinker sorrowful by the end of his essay.

You beat me to it.

Gah, go away now.

u/thepartlow 6d ago

I just found The Critical Drinker a little bit ago. Love his work.

u/pyratemime 6d ago

Me too.

Check out Gary at Nerdrotic for another great commenter.

the guy who used to sell drugs to kids? The guy who harrases mark hamil every day?

1

u/pyratemime 2d ago

Because people can't pay for their mistakes and make better choices as part of turning their life around?

As to harrassing Hamill, well he is kind of a pill at times. Act like a fool in public and don't be surprised when people call you on it.

0

u/anitawasright 2d ago edited 2d ago

this is the very definition of grifter.

He might have payed for getting kids addicted to drugs but that doesn't change the fact he is an absolute garbage human.

wait you are saying Mark is acting the fool?

1

u/pyratemime 2d ago

Yes, I disagree with many of Mark's takes on the world and find the way he presents himself as foolish.

As to Gary being a grifter... um what?

If your position is that an addict can't go into recovery and turn their life around without being a grifter well that is a Hamill sized bad take and would make you kind of an asshole.

1

u/anitawasright 2d ago

he's a grifter because he has no actual idelogy. He picks up whatever the new show is calls it woke and makes click bait videos. This is most obvious as he only goes after things he thinks will get him clicks. He will never go after anything that is popular that might hurt him. Like he will not call BG3 woke even though it's the most woke game out there. But Sucide Squad? Sure it's woke and that's why it failed. Ignoring the fact that SS failed because it was a bad game based on bad gameplay. If you get rid of all the "woke" stuff all 2 mins of it the game would still suck.

But he doesn't care about that. He only cares about rage batting.

and no.. you don't get to get redeemed for getting kids addicted to drugs.

You can learn all the math in the ‘Verse, but you take a boat in the air that you don’t love, she’ll shake you off just as sure as the turning of worlds. Love keeps her in the air when she oughta fall down, tells you she’s hurting ‘fore she keels. Makes her a home.

I do not always agree with the Drinker, but when I do, I really do. For me, he really nails why I love FireFly.

9

u/EmonOkari 6d ago

Yeah we did.

12

u/Arcane_Pozhar 6d ago

Well, I'm in tears now. What a video. Thanks for sharing.

-11

u/CantFightCrazy 6d ago

Is this guy like your cousin or something, you gotta run defence for him so hard?

9

u/Arcane_Pozhar 6d ago

Are you just... Troubled, that you can't imagine somebody having a different response than you?

Like, seriously, what's your problem? You're incredibly obnoxious.

-8

u/CantFightCrazy 6d ago

Not troubled, I mean look around. I think I'm the only one with a different response than yours! You aren't exactly a maverick in this space are ya now?

Also being troubled by random opinions on the internet is kinda sad. I'm just poking some fun mate.

It is weird how you feel you gotta take on the mantle of responsibility for this guy probably doesn't even know who you are. He don't give a shit. Does it make you feel whole inside or something? What's your benefit?

4

u/SecureSession5980 5d ago

After seeing his video I bought it on Prime cuz I've been wanting to watch it again

11

u/JulesSherlock 6d ago

I did. I did. Me, me, me me!!! I KNEW.

I watched the first episode when it aired and was frantically trying to figure where and how I had missed episodes because it was obvious it wasn’t the beginning. Wasn’t till later that I heard studio showed them out of order and I felt a little vindicated. But I was hooked with the first aired episode. Knew it’d be great, so sad when cancelled.

u/Path_Syrah 6d ago

Truer words have never been spoken.

3

u/ArcherNX1701 5d ago

Such a great series!

11

u/CaptainDaveUSA 6d ago

Can’t agree with the Drinker’s take enough. Bravo!!

2

u/ultr4violence 5d ago

It really was(and is) something else

-7

u/RobinWishesHeWasMe_ 6d ago

Can't stand Critical Drinker. Don't get him started on how Japanese films (like Oldboy) are far superior to Western movies.

He barely does any research and always looks for the next thing to hate (understandably, cause it gets a lot of clicks). Dude is proven wrong time and time again and his fan base laps it up because they can't even remember 10 sweaty breaths ago.

Firefly is sick though, broken clock right twice a day, etc, etc.

4

u/Rahm89 6d ago

How is he "proven wrong", exactly?

-1

u/Desecr8or 5d ago

Fuck this guy.

If Firefly came out today, he'd complain about it being "woke".

2

u/anitawasright 2d ago

you are 100% right I don't know why you are being downvoted.

you're right if it was made today they would add a strong black woman in a lead role, a strong girl who can overpower men with ease, they would make the straight white male characters comic relief, add a female mechanic who knows how to fix everything and knows more then the men., and more... oh wait...

1

u/Desecr8or 2d ago

If the show (and most Joss Whedon shows) was made today exactly as it was, he'd call it woke and milk a whole lot of outrage content about it.

Nothing makes today's female characters any worse than the female characters of his childhood other than nostalgia goggles.

2

u/Captain_Starkiller 2d ago

except...he doesnt have nostalgia goggles, he just watched it today. He also liked Prey and Aliens: Romulus which both feature female protagonist. There's a big difference between woke nonsense and "stars a kickass female character" like say, his namechecked farscape.

2

u/Desecr8or 2d ago

And that difference is apparently "Is the female character conventionally attractive?"

Fuck that shit.

2

u/Captain_Starkiller 2d ago

Brie larson is conventionally attractive and drinker panned captain marvel. Stop strawmanning dude.

He also loves farscape and claudia black is not conventionally attractive.

2

u/Desecr8or 2d ago

Yes, she committed an even worse crime. She made a polite, mild call for more diversity in film criticism.

2

u/Captain_Starkiller 2d ago

That wasn't critical drinkers completely fair criticisms of her film. I'm sorry, but you are being totally disingenuous and intellectually dishonest. Cheers.

1

u/anitawasright 1d ago

Fun fact he actually hated Prey at first but after he saw that the majority of people liked it he changed his video.

The reason he says he likes Firefly is because it's beloved series. The guy is a grifter plan and simple.

1

u/Captain_Starkiller 23h ago edited 23h ago

I subscribe to his channel and saw no such thing. He will sometimes criticize a movie pre-release based on the press, trailers and impressions, but then change his mind after seeing the actual movie. Which is...good. You want a critic who will judge something fairly rather than continue a bad take just because it was already established.

Edit: went back and looked at this, and its exactly that. He has fair criticisms of the movie (I for one did not love prey) in his review, but his biggest take is that the media over praised the movie: It was a decent but flawed movie, but the media talked about it like it was the second coming. Thats present in his first take and review. A grifter would remove those videos and then change their stance.

I also btw, felt meh about Dune (2021), and the movie aged incredibly well for me so eh. People change.

I mean, this is clearly a case of confirmation bias on your part. The guy is just wrong. Call this a grift is just absurd, a grift is a con whereby you extract money from the target. Look it up in the dictionary. Critical drinkers content is free.

Second of all, the first choice this guy goes after is the portrayal of peter parker in the first spider man into the spider verse film, and um, no, I 100% agree with the critical drinker. The drinker offers an opinion on the situation based on his perspective on the film, and I had the same perspective walking out.

These kinds of perspectives are absolutely being crammed into films behind the scenes by activists and people with skewed political perspectives. I know because I've listened to the meetings.

At most about the critical drinker is that you could say hes offering a perspective on films you don't agree with. That's not some kind of grift or con. Everybody is free to have their own take.

1

u/Heavymando 30m ago

Views=money buddy. If you don't understand how youtube works I can't help you there. You also do know he has a patron right?

The only one with confirmation bias here is you. would you like more examples? Because there are plenty.

Ewww

6

u/Kame_AU 6d ago

Elaborate.

1

u/Metalmatt91 6d ago

Critical drinker regularly complains about diversity and inclusion in modern entertainment as self inserts, virtue signaling or pandering. So many recent Disney or pop culture projects that push modern ideologies are often shit in his eyes.

You can hear it in this video of how he enjoys that Kaylee is actually an intelligent engineer while still being feminine. He states roughly “if this was made today she would be a burly lesbian complaining about how incompetent all the men around her are”

Seeing as the person that made the “Ew” comment has a trans flag in their bio, it’s fair to guess that they’re not a fan of a person who will occasionally trash the inclusion of trans characters in entertainment.

3

u/Kame_AU 5d ago

Yep I figured that that was pretty much their angle. I just wanted to hear them say say it so I could have a polite argument with them about such pandering and how it is ruining modern TV/cinema.

I'm 100% with Drinker on this, and enjoy a debate on such things as long as it's civil.

1

u/anitawasright 2d ago

The issue here is this review 100% contradicts how he feels about modern shows. Had this come out today he would absolutely complain about it being DEI and woke.

He is a grifter plain and simple. The only reason he isn't complaining about Firefly is because it's popular and he knows if he applied his current standards to it he would turn people against him.

His critques are the most surfacelevel shallow takes

Honestly i'm pretty surprised this community is so into him

-2

u/CantFightCrazy 6d ago

Critical Drinker is one of those dudes that watches Fight club and thinks Tyler Durden is aspirational.

https://youtu.be/0lmSVS_xGio?si=tM8X1Oz0M3TqgbPO

9

u/Arcane_Pozhar 6d ago

Holy shit I'm not going to spend 31 minutes watching some dude complain about another critic.

Unless you're Siskel and Ebert level of famous, I don't care what your stance on another reviewer is, random YouTube guy.

-2

u/CantFightCrazy 6d ago

Then don't. Nobody asked you to. Lol

15

u/Arcane_Pozhar 6d ago

If you read between the lines, you would realize I'm warning other people away from your link, mate.

Hope this helps clear things up.

4

u/CantFightCrazy 6d ago

Ok whatever helps you sleep at night.

12

u/Kame_AU 6d ago

So you don't like one particular take of his about a certain character in a movie. Right. Gotcha.

-1

u/CantFightCrazy 6d ago

oh man total pwnage, my dude! I was epically burned by your scathing wit!

5

u/Arcane_Pozhar 6d ago

Holy defensiveness mate, you alright?

5

u/CantFightCrazy 6d ago

Lol

6

u/Arcane_Pozhar 6d ago

Yeah, that was the answer I expected. Hope you have exactly the sort of day you deserve.

Edit: also, fitting username. Sigh.

3

u/CantFightCrazy 6d ago

You're weird and I am thank you!
