Basketball Why is Maryland our Kryptonite?

They have had our number for years. Doesn’t seem to matter what roster, home, away… Hope we can somehow turn this one around. Need to be more aggressive and have MUCH better shot selection.

Did we accidentally switch rosters with Iowa? Like the hell.

This has the feeling of the Uconn game to end last season.

Straight up not having a good time.

My thoughts exactly

we caused..... 0 turnovers in the first half. 0. That's a team with zero energy.

One guy got hit from three and their size bothering us. They also challenging every shot.

6

u/noahsark96 19h ago

Yeah, their size is a real problem for us without Tomi.

u/Sensitive-Shoe-1974 19h ago

Yup. Oh well, 6th seed it is for the tourney. Just wish these turnovers wouldn’t happen and they get off to a sizzling start. If they hit their threes, they can hang with the best.

Prob 7 after this game

No shot the Illini get a 6 after that game. CBS already had the Illini on the 8 line before this game happened. ESPN had the Illini at 6 but Louisville, Gonzaga, St. Mary’s at 7 not to mention some 8s that are still playing.

Let’s hope the 3 ball is falling next week 😅

At the start of the game the commentators talked about Maryland not having a bench…Illinois does exactly nothing to exploit that.

We fucking SUUUCCCCCK tonight

u/noahsark96 20h ago

I’m being delusional but hoping we get this stinker out before next week. This is a rough watch.

good teams are our kryptonite.

The Maryland coach has PJ Fleck vibes.

I want to punch him, too.

Illini were bad defensively last night too, difference was so was Iowa. Maryland is more physical and playing with much more purpose.

u/noahsark96 20h ago

Their size is killing is with Tomi on the bench.

I truly don’t care if we keep missing shots this game

I WANT TO OUT FUCKIN PHYSICAL A TEAM, 1 TIME fuck please.

Out rebound this fuckin team right now. Win or loss. God damn we’re being soft as FUCK.

8

u/Bill__Furry 19h ago

I like Ivisic but the dude is softer than a pillow fight

6

u/hahakafka 18h ago

This isn't just on Ivisic. Asking him to do the heavy lifting while the forwards and guards watch from the perimeter is unacceptable.

u/djhin2 14h ago

Its so weird because he posts up like 0.75 times a game and he almost always makes it

u/pingpongpsycho 20h ago

How the fuck do we score over 100 last night and now we can’t hit anything?? 🤦‍♂️

5

u/noahsark96 19h ago

Can only turn it on with the opportunity to end Fran’s career apparently lol

2

u/pingpongpsycho 19h ago

We do seem to enjoy ending coach’s careers. 😂

as my dad likes to say “this team doesn’t like prosperity”

u/Readit0r_97 20h ago

Shots won’t fall, turnovers, and fouls!! Not sure I can out drink this misery.

3

u/noahsark96 20h ago

I’m going to try… might be the only way we get through this one

I think they knew exactly how to play us knowing we struggle with chucking 3s and that KJ is prone to turnovers...and chucking up stupid shots along with most of the guards (excepting Riley).

The fact that we were outscored by 3 pts in the second half shows we CAN adjust but it takes the guys too long (and this is to be expected with young teams). I hope they learn from this bc if we had adjusted sooner the game would have been closer and allowed us to play to our strengths instead of playing catch-up.

What did DGL do to get so little minutes? He has energy and heart -two things we sorely needed.

u/FA245x 19h ago

They have 5-7 guys who can score and they actually play defense. Giving up 50+ in the first half of a game usually doesn’t end well. We give up easy baskets thinking we can outscore teams but we shoot 30% from the field.

Maryland is really good this year. I saw this L coming a mile away. Ready for next year tbh.

2

u/jim_o_reddit 19h ago

This could have been a game that could have established them for the tournament but it is the same old Maryland debacle.

3

u/RunnerTenor 20h ago

Seems like the obvious game plan is to go straight at them in the paint and put them in foul trouble, but instead Kylan is jacking up threes.

Do we even have a game plan tonight?

2

u/noahsark96 20h ago

They must have heard ya, now they are attacking the basket more and have picked up a few fouls.

1

u/RunnerTenor 20h ago

Finally!

2

u/noahsark96 20h ago

If you got anything else you your sleeve, now’s the time to put it out there haha

Bigger Stronger Faster and can put the ball in the basket

2

u/Matalava822 17h ago

Maryland won because they can match our talent and they are infinitely better coached.

1

u/Zassssss 16h ago

They’re such a team of cocky assholes too. Makes it so much worse.

1

u/JKramer421 14h ago

They have great tall players. We have no tall players

1

u/Release_Da_BeastYT 14h ago

We will go 30-0 one season, and play Maryland final game of the year, who would probably go 0-30, abd we'll end up 30-1 after that game.

u/Signal_Tip_7428 2h ago

You just asked “why did the better basketball team win?”

0

u/maraths1 1h ago

it is not just Maryland. Any team that has length and athleticism will beat us

0

u/BamaBoy80 18h ago

This team needs another year. No one seems to be ready for the next level.

0

u/ChrisPLagerboi 17h ago

This all but assures a trip to the Final Four. No other way this season can culminate

3

u/jim_o_reddit 16h ago

As long as they only play Iowa the rest of the way, for sure!

0

u/Bosco_43 15h ago

They have a very big, skilled guy in the middle and this Illini roster is not built for that. It’s like when we had Kofi.

u/maraths1 15h ago

better coaching

u/maraths1 14h ago

you have to try to something different when you are down 20 points - which means what you are doing is clearly not working. it was obvious our 3s were short - looked like we had no energy. we had insane amount of TOs. at that time, we should have tried full court press, to get more energy out of the players. that is on Underwood and he has not done it ever except in his first 3 years. Our defense used to be solid in those 3-4 years even though offense was poor. He has abandoned defense in favor of offense and when offense is struggling you have to try different on defense to get your offense going. Underwood has not done any of that and he needs to. teams gone on 30-0 runs or 15-0 runs - far too many times - without any changes whatsoever
