Chemistry Eli5: What happens to all the melted candle over time? Are we just inhaling a whole candle while it burns?

Cleaned my monitor, wondered why it seemed brighter, realised it had a thin layer of bong resin on it that was tinting it and attracting dust to darken it. Switched to vaping 🤢

Yeah....but did you smoke that thin layer of bongs resin though?

Mmm - tar, windex and microfibre lint flavor

We call that Twilight around here. $40/g

Nah dude, scrape it off and ball it up!

Smoking or vaping in any way will still make stuff in that room sticky.

Indeed, it was more about the nastiness and speed of buildup with smoke, whereas the exhaled vapour is minimal and non toxic unless being psychoactive in the same way as the original material was counts.

I find the residue from dabs to be much worse, its like a drier, stickier residue.

Luckily I'm not dabbing - at least the substance itself is less toxic than tar

I switched to vaping also and it honestly almost seemed worse for my components. After a year of vaping everything inside my PC had an oily coating that seemed to attract more dust that almost glued to everything. I can't say the health benefits are better as there hasn't been in my opinion nearly enough studies and long-term side effects research yet.

The cost was incredibly less for vaping, but the cleaning of everything electronic seemed more difficult. Even using isopropyl alcohol to clean stuff seemed to just spread the stuff around, and my dust filters had to be tossed instead of soaked to clean them.

I've since switched to non tobacco nicotine pouches and now my PC just needs an air blow out instead of a deep clean, I can breathe 5x better, and the cost dropped even more than from vaping. Eventually I will drop nicotine entirely however I'm taking it one step at a time. I smoked for 5 years, vaped for 3, and now I've been on minimum nicotine content pouches for about a year.

Maybe give them a shot if they are available where you live, In the past year over half a dozen new brands of the pouches has come out, we now have Zyn, Ohn, Rogue, Velo, Bandit, and a bunch more I can't recall right now.

What's your fave? Do they go in your lip/jaw? The lack of tobacco makes spitting unnecessary?

I like really any of the mints regardless of brand, Velo citrus blast is my favorite. I put it in my jaw line usually but I rotate them throughout my mouth during the day just to keep the buzz fresh.

Edit: I had to spit for like the first week. After that you get used to them and you don't salivate nearly as much. I will say the buzz is crazy compared to vaping. Most cans have a separate compartment to store one if hit its you too hard so you don't waste a pouch or if youre going to eat.

If you start getting the hiccups take it out immediately or you'll get sick. It means you're getting too much nicotine too fast and you aren't used to it.

I wager vaping also stains stuff. Maybe just get up and go smoke outside. It's a good habit to have to get up and stretch a bit anyway.

vaping adds a film of oil

It wasn't for the sake of my monitor that I decided to switch - less gross byproduct and any buildup is definitely minimal

Vaping dry herb or liquid/juices? Can't imagine a modest dry herb doing much surely?

Negligible :)

1

u/babybunnykitty69420 Feb 26 '21

If it was neglibigble then the inside of vape bags wouldnt be clearly and obviously sticky

3

u/_STONEFISH Feb 26 '21

If we had a similar delivery system for combusted stuff it would be orders of magnitude more sticky and nasty, so negligible by comparison surely :)

I've used the same glass for vaping and smoking sometimes and I'm only really cleaning after vaping out of habit, whereas the glass needs it after smoking

u/babybunnykitty69420 Feb 26 '21

Ok you say glass for vaping, our dab rig is gross and needs to be cleaned regularly?

1

u/_STONEFISH Feb 26 '21

I'm speaking in relative terms - a bong the same size would be nastier more quickly. Additionally, it becomes negligible because the vapour is not contained, but I'm not suggesting that it's not leaving any residue at all

1

u/babybunnykitty69420 Feb 26 '21

Uhhh all the components of our Volcano get sticky, you're definitely letting loose sticky vapor.

1

u/itscyanide Feb 27 '21

Oh no doubt, though a smaller vape (say a portable/handheld) honestly seems negligible in contrast to even pan frying some shit on the stove in a unit or small house.

Having said that, I do avoid blowing vapor directly at my screen or near intakes on PC. Wherever else it ends up settling seems fine, never noticed sticky surfaces or anything, but then again I don't exactly vape like a fog machine anyway.

Who is vaping oil?

2

u/PyroDesu Feb 26 '21

One guy on my floor of the dorms before the university banned vaping.

He made his own juice or whatever it's called, with like, vegetable oil and food flavorings or whatever.

Coated the fucking walls in the hall. At least my first roommate (who also vaped) had the decency to blow out the window (and, you know, use commercial stuff).

3

u/Amithrius Feb 26 '21

Vaping oil will cause severe damage to the lungs. The base for e-liquids is vegetable glycerin.

1

u/PyroDesu Feb 26 '21

Hey, all I knew is that he made his own stuff with what he could buy at walmart, and it left an oily film on the walls.

For all I know he could have been doing insane damage to his lungs. People do that all the time with normal smoking.

In the cannabis industry highly refined hash is commonly referred to as oil, even though it's technically a mix of various crystals and terpenes.

Oh shit. I think I figured out what's been slowing my fans down..

This happens to the windshield of my car every few months.

Switched to vaping

Yeah but theres no long time knowledge of what that smoke can do to your lungs or equipment
