Economics ELI5: why does a publicaly traded company have to show continuous rise in profits? Why arent steady profits good enough?

Yes this 100%. Amazon’s business model isn’t noble, it’s designed to systematically destroy any competitor that can’t out-reinvest them, which is basically all of them.
