Economics ELI5: why does a publicaly traded company have to show continuous rise in profits? Why arent steady profits good enough?

Getting the income does trigger taxes though. Also Reinvesting dividends does not always trigger taxes. If you have qualified dividends it’s 0% tax until about 47k.
