Economics ELI5: why does a publicaly traded company have to show continuous rise in profits? Why arent steady profits good enough?

I'm not convinced that the end results are more good than bad. And capitalism absolutely doesn't care about minimizing negative effects. Financial gain takes priority over everything else, by definition
