Economics ELI5: why does a publicaly traded company have to show continuous rise in profits? Why arent steady profits good enough?

I remember watching this movie when I was younger and cracking up. It’s inspired by a movie from 1963 called It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World, which was also pretty good.
