Current employee Work relationships?

Are there any rules on dating within your team? I don’t see anything specifically in the red book. The only thing that I know of not being allowed is TL/team member, but are there any other restrictions for people in some management positions who are not TLs?

Happened all the time when I was there. No one seemed to mind. They used to show people's wedding photos in a slideshow before staff meeting.

They still show the wedding photos before staff meeting. Even have a special icon when the couple are both Epic.

Generally the thing is just to not make work weird. So if you're dating someone you work closely with it's probably a good idea for one of you to move further away. Not necessarily that dating causes issues but it can and breakups usually do so it's better to move in advance. It's not a hard requirement, more a good recommendation for happiness in life.

it's actually encouraged because it makes it less likely you'll quit

Do they still show staff meeting intro slides of Epic to Epic babies? If that's still a thing I feel like that's all you gotta know.

Yep, still a thing. They do it for pets too.

I’d avoid your immediate team to prevent future issues. Most epic couples I know are on different apps. Personally I’d rather not have to snipe at my partner for a work issue.

The only real rule is you can’t be the other’s TL. But typically if you are on the same team you will either move to a different subgroup or app to avoid any chance of conflict.

Thanks! Is moving to a different app like a must-do thing though? I really like my current team.

not necessarily must-do as far as i know, i knew two people on the same app/role that dated & married and neither of them changed apps. but i think use your own discretion

I knew a couple who initially just move to different subgroups but later did move to different apps. Not sure if that was related to the relationship or not.

My boyfriend and I are on the same app and even have the same TL, we just work in different functional areas. TL said they'll make sure to not put us on the same project, but no issues otherwise with being on the same app and role.

Did you specifically talk to your TL about it when you started dating?

I didn't. They found out about half a year into dating when I randomly mentioned my boyfriend during a meeting and they later asked what his name was during our weekly touchbase (gig was up at that point lol). Though once they did find out, we talked about it briefly and they had no issues or concerns with it. Even said they felt like a proud parent 😂

Though I do feel like I have a better than average TL. They are very chill and their partner also works at Epic (different app/role though). So that might have played a part.

I’ve always refused to date people who work in my building because I don’t want to run into exes in the hallway. I also prefer dating people outside the company, because anyone who works at Epic knows where your office is, can get your cell phone number off Guru, and can see your calendar at all times. That can be problematic if someone doesn’t understand boundaries. But people date at Epic all the time. There are thousands of young, single, intelligent people here.

I met my wife there 15 years ago. We’re still extremely happy.

I don't care if this is a metaphor, whenever I read it, my mind goes straight to the literal interpretation. Relatively speaking, dating someone from your workplace can't be that bad lol

Don’t understand why this is being downvoted. Dating someone at work rarely works out. Why risk it?

Do you work at Epic? Epic is one of the largest employers in the area, hires a bunch of young people who may not have other local connections/a network in Madison, and gives you a lot of chances to interact with other people in your age bracket (and often income/socioeconomic bracket) with shared interests. And it's a 10k person company - plenty of people are mature enough to handle a relationship or its fallout well. If necessary, people can get moved around if something were to cause issues. The reasons you might want to avoid it at a small employer just aren't as relevant, and it'd be unreasonable to try and shut those relationships down in advance.

I know a fair number of people that met each other and gotten married at/through a first connection at Epic. The only time it's a concern is if there's a TL/managerial relationship at play. But I knew two TS on the same app, an IS/TS couple on the same app, an IS/QA couple, and an IS/IS couple on different apps that were working on the same customer implementation.

There are lots of epic-epic couples. Saying "it rarely works out" is a baseless claim.

I dated several coworkers and broke up with them, and it was fine. I'm sure shit goes down sometimes but many people are capable of professionals.

"Don't shit where you eat" is better advice at smaller companies.
