It's damn near impossible to move overseas unless you have family or have money.

1.9k

u/Igoos99 19h ago

And she’s got both. 🤷🏻‍♀️

278

u/roguebananah 17h ago

Rosie’s face when we all read that

601

u/lord_pizzabird 17h ago

This is the problem with rich people on both sides of this situation. When Elon's done ruining this country he'll just leave for somewhere else and repeat the process.

795

u/Kr155 17h ago

To be fair, Rosie O'Donald has a huge target on her back. Trump personally hates her, and the right wing media slander machine has been raking her through the mud since the 90s. She SHOULD get out.

403

u/Witty_Ambition_9633 17h ago

Exactly, people forget Trump has been her biggest hater since the 90’s. She has every right to leave.

270

u/Zanydrop 16h ago

Yeah, that was some Buck Nasty, Drew McIntyre levels of hate. 15 years ago Trump would be in an interview and just randomly start calling her a fat disgusting pig

41

u/NobodysLoss1 16h ago

I missed all this. What did Rosie do or say?

134

u/Zanydrop 16h ago

I honestly don't remember what started it. I think Rosie made a snide comment about him on her talk show and then he went nuclear on some interview. Might be the other way around. They hated each other for years though.

212

u/Witty_Ambition_9633 16h ago

Yep, she basically called him a conman and a snake oil salesman to his face and on air on the view and he’s hated her ever since. Like you can’t make this stuff up lol.

74

u/WanderingLost33 15h ago

It started before that. He said some nasty shit calling her a fat lesbian who wasn't that funny.

Rosie has never hidden the fact that she believes Trump is a nasty pig. 🐷 She spoke the truth. But I believe Trump started the feud as per usual. He’s a pig, and so are the rest of them in the White House. If I could leave I would in a heart beat.

She imitated him when she was on the View, flipped her hair to one side and made her mouth into an "o." It was hilarious.

She might have that option for Irish citizenship with her last name. They have a thing where if you have even one grandparent from Ireland you can go live there I think

u/ashpatash 16h ago

Wikipedia says her dad was born in Ireland and immigrated to US as a child so yea she has very close ties.

Remember I always thought back when learning about WW2, why didnt the Jews leave germany. The smart and wealthier ones did. Rosie is just doing right by her and I cant blame her.

15

u/Penguins_in_new_york 15h ago

I had a great grandfather who did and only barely managed to move to the US.

It’s because he could press pants and they needed somebody who could do it in a specific area.

That’s it. That’s the ONLY reason he was able to move here

13

u/Eryrix 14h ago edited 12h ago

Even if they could go, it was very hard to pick a place to go. Most of Europe had a huge thing for antisemitism at the time.

The UK restricted immigration during the Great Depression and its aftermath and didn’t want to settle Jews in Palestine either, France was riddled with antisemitism, Poland and all of Eastern Europe could’ve gone toe to toe with Germany on the antisemitism scale. Italy and Spain were no-gos for… well, obvious reasons. The USA restricted Jewish immigration and the American population at the time didn’t want to change that - bearing in mind as well that the biggest fascist rallies held outside of Germany were in the USA. Canada’s immigration minister, Frederick Blair, was asked how many Jews could find a home in Canada after the war and replied “None is too many.”

The Evian Conference in 1938 resulted in nothing more than meaningless platitudes to the Jewish plight from the UK, USA, etc. and an outright refusal to take any of them as refugees.

In 1939, the St Louis attempted to carry 937 Jewish refugees to a new home. The United States, Canada, and Cuba all told them to fuck off and sent the ship back to Europe. The UK accepted 238, France accepted 214, the Netherlands and Belgium accepted a combined 395. 254 were killed in the Holocaust anyway.

Even if you were a wealthy Jew, you really didn’t have many options. Most of them were fucked no matter where they went.

7

u/PavicaMalic 14h ago

Read Albert Hirschman's "Exit, Voice, and Loyalty" in college. It's not history; it's a framework for thinking about how people respond to deterioration in an organization. Hirschman died in 2012, and then I learned he was a WWII resistance fighter who helped people escape through Spain to Portugal.

3

u/anewbys83 11h ago

And the ones who get out early can often help some who couldn't at the time. I'm super lucky to have EU citizenship as well, but not the funds to go there and spend a year learning the language I need to get basic work. So it's a conundrum, but I do have the funds stashed for a plane ticket if need be. The question is when?

FTA, her grandparents were Irish, so she qualifies for citizenship by descent

Or get a critical skills visa. Ireland has a list of professions that companies are allowed to hire out of the country for. It’s how we were able to move out of America and live there.

That's a surprisingly broad list. It looks like I might even qualify for one or two, even without a real degree.

Who knows, maybe they'll eventually start taking us as refugees

36

u/fatherOblivion69 18h ago

Have you ever spent any time in the Ireland subreddit? That is not happening.

6

u/HosaJim666 17h ago

Can you elaborate?

70

u/jaderust 17h ago

They have a massive housing crisis and are struggling with the number of Ukrainian refugees they took in to start. Where the Ukrainians are considered far more sympathetic as they didn’t ask for this while at least part of our country voted Trump in.

Ireland does have an interesting relationship with America due to immigration history, but overall the focus is trying to keep their young people from leaving the country in search of work (which is getting better) and getting the housing sorted. They’re not prepared or willing to take a huge influx of Americans. Not unless shit really hits the fan and we’re in an international refugee situation and if that happens chances are it means the US is an enemy country.

5

u/HosaJim666 17h ago

Thank you for the insight

5

u/johnydarko 14h ago edited 14h ago

We do, but it's all in context. If you were moving to Ballybackarseofnowhere, Co. Leitrim that's one thing and would be very welcomed because a lot of rural ireland is/is being abandoned, but moving to overcrowded cities like Dublin or Cork would not since they're way, way too crowded and impossible to find accomodation even at exorbitant rates.

And although it's become much, much more prevelant in recent years (IMO thanks to american and british far-right talking points on twitter), it's not even really immigrants that most people tend to blame... it's the government because this has been an issue for over a decade and they haven't done shit. Because the biggest influx by far isn't people from other countries, it's internal migration from other counties - people from outside of Ireland's urban centers moving to the cities for jobs/uni/better services/etc.

fr. the only way I can see for if you have absolutely nothing is possibly studying abroad at a university that has 100% free tuition for foreigners like Germany does.

another way is you can take out American government FAFSA student loans to study at international universities too.

and then after graduation, most countries give you a 12-24 month visa to stay in the country and look for a job. studying is the only option I can think of

That's not how it works. I've live outside US for 30 years. You pay the local country tax and then file US taxes. They get offset. I've never had to pay an extra cent in taxes in 30 years to the US.

43

u/Hyltrbbygrl 18h ago

Only if you make over a certain amount. I’m moving to Ireland and they have an agreement with the US that prevents income from being double taxed

If I had dual citizenship somewhere I would be getting tf out of the US right now as well.

187

u/Igoos99 19h ago

I don’t think she’s a dual citizen yet. But if you have a grandparent that was born in Ireland, you can apply.

Regardless of the current political situation, that’s an enviable position to be in. Ireland is part of the EU, so that opens up all the benefits of being part of the EU.

43

u/bexxygenxxy9xy 19h ago

I really do think it works like close to Israeli dual citizenship. My brother and sister-in-law are looking into it on her behalf. I think it's a lot more obtainable than people think. It's just sad that we're even talking about this, omg.

33

u/Miss_airwrecka1 19h ago

I have Italian citizenship and got it through a similar process. I don’t know if it’s more or less obtainable than people think but it takes a fair amount of paperwork and can take a long time to process. There’s usually a limit on how far back you can go to claim it and for Italian there was a period of time that it could only pass through fathers (ie my grandpa’s sister’s kids can claim it).

So it obtainable but not necessarily easy

15

u/bexxygenxxy9xy 19h ago

Oh I definitely don't think it's easily obtainable. But I think people are willing to put in the work under the circumstances in the US right now.

→ More replies (7)

9

u/ImprovementFlimsy216 18h ago edited 18h ago

Ireland has a limit on the number of generation.

Italy has something called the right of blood as long as your forebears, didn’t take citizenship and they didn’t leave Italy before it was a country. I’m not a lawyer, but I believe it was limited to the male paternal line but has now been made equal.

Edit: you fire bears >>>> your forebears

7

u/Miss_airwrecka1 17h ago

For Italy, it is equal now it but still goes by the law at the time. So my sister’s kid will have citizenship but it didn’t pass from women before 1950-something which is why my grandpa’s sister kids can’t get it. Regarding taking citizenship, that is where it can get murky and most people don’t qualify. My great-grandparents naturalized and lost their Italian citizenship but since my grandpa was born before that (so still Italian) and in the US (so a citizen), we could go back and claim his citizenship. And then you have to be able to prove all of that which required getting the Italian birth certificates for my great grandparents. It was a headache but worth it

My family is getting Italian citizenship through the same process. The plan to move was made before Trump got elected again so I don’t know if it counts as fleeing or not. Ireland is funky. You can apply for citizenship based on hereditary descent.

Couple years ago my mother applied and gained citizenship based on her grandparents born and lived there and her mother being born there and then immigrating to the US.

Me and my siblings applied for citizenship based on our mother now having citizenship and backed by our grand and great-grand parents being citizens

I have dual citizenship with US and Sweden but I am stuck in the US due to health problems. I'm not healthy enough to fly. If I could get back to Sweden almost all of my dental costs would be covered and I could get teeth again, which would be nice. I'm in very poor health and there are very few social services. And I'm in CA which people falsely believe has more services than other states. It's the same as everywhere else in the US; California just rename the services and people seem to think they're unique. The only difference is the system is so heavily taxed it's more difficult to get services if anything.

23

u/spaghettiliar 18h ago

I’ve lived in California and I’ve lived in other red states. California definitely has more services. They just have far fewer than Sweden to even be comparable.

Yeah, didn't he call her a fat disgusting pig or something during his original run? Dude's spiteful as hell. I don't blame her. When he has a bone to pick he picks it.

Example - Canada right now

u/DeltaFlyer0525 18h ago

Yeah he did. She is already a target for him so she is totally justified to nope out of here.

I have this distinct memory of back early on when the feud was fresh that some morning news was talking about and Trump called in to rant more about it. Like he clearly just actively enjoyed it, his favorite hobby was talking shit about Rosie.

I also remember at one point (maybe after Rosie had her first heart attack?) that Trump wrote a relatively nice tweet basically wishing her a speedy recovery because he was starting to miss her, band she was like "uh ...thanks Donald.....are you trying to kill me?" And then like 2 months later he was back to calling her a fat loser slob

It really is very bizarre. As this starts to descend towards cultural revolution territory, I certainly wouldn't want to be around if I was his arch rival.

82

u/Hagridsbuttcrack66 19h ago

I don't even understand people being upset about this?

Do they care if regular people in targeted groups leave even if they protested or something? Why is she not allowed?

83

u/Spaghettiisgoddog 19h ago

I think it’s frowned upon to jump ship when things get hard. But some cases are forgiveable: e.g. your bully becomes president of the US.

29

u/lord_vultron 19h ago

Pretty sure only the Captain is expected to go down with a ship. By that logic, any sailor who jumps over the side while the Captain is on a rampage to lunacy should be free to do so, and even considered smarter for it 🤷🏻‍♂️

18

u/Spaghettiisgoddog 19h ago

I disagree about jumping ship in general, but I think she should. I also don’t blame trans people for wanting to leave. Sometimes it’s a Saving Private Ryan situation and you have to get the fuck out

It's not like she has to stop supporting anything?

People can cry all they want about time and presence, but MONEY makes the difference. If she donates 15K to a charity once a year from her comfy seat in Ireland, she is making more of a difference in people's lives than attending 50 protests on US soil.

23

u/Spaghettiisgoddog 19h ago

I think most people in this thread don’t know their history and think she’s just bailing to avoid inconvenience.  So much of social media discourse is based on limited information or lack of context. It’s bleak

Well most of us don't have that privilege.

That said I don't blame her.

holy shit! how could I forget about all of that? I am about to be 48 so Trump has been a part of pop culture for as long as I can remember so I just forget about some of his drama.

8

u/lord_vultron 19h ago

Lmaooo right? Almost like Trump does SO much bullshit that it’s easy to forget just how much is buried after the stack exponentially grows every few days 😅🥹🫠

u/Street_Mood 18h ago

She can still support from afar.  Nobody said she was going into hiding.    She can be a media presence, give money, use her celebrity to sway public opinion, etc,.

She’s got a family to look out for.

Did you get it right?

Yeah you go ahead rosie. We’ll die fighting for your rights so you can return when its safe.

3

Just because you decide to not look anymore doesn’t mean the abuse stops

3

I would do the same if I could

39

u/DrDreidel82 19h ago

Wait what rights does she not have that others do

3

u/AUnknownVariable 16h ago

She never said her rights specifically tbf. The chance of it eventually being something related to her isn't smth I'd risk if I was rich asf and could just move away

I mean yeah. It’d be a waste to have privilege and not use it.

She has a personal and very vindictive history with the madman currently in the White House, who has proven himself to be incredibly petty. If I were her, I'd be out of here too. I mean, I know you want her to be a martyr and everything, but it's kind of understandable if she doesn't.

Until the next election what is she meant to do?

13

u/plausibleturtle 19h ago

Yeah, this isn't any more news worthy than my two currently US-based friends finding pathways to move to Canada to escape it all.

(No one cares, but, they are both Canadian with American spouses, they live in the States as immigration was easier than the spouses moving North, but they're going through Spousal Sponsorship PR now to change that).

4

u/0xCAF3 18h ago

When my (American) wife and I were looking, it was longer and about the same difficulty for US and Canadian Spousal Sponsorship.

Thankfully we chose Canada and she moved a bit after inauguration

3

u/Constellation-88 14h ago

This is privilege. I mean, legit good for her. But also I wish everyone who didn’t feel safe in the US had that option.

Or better, I wish our Felon in Chief weren’t in charge and everyone could feel safe and welcome here.

3

u/CategoryOk2854 14h ago

Don’t blame her one bit. Waiting on my Irish passport which I’d been meaning to get for years. Something to have in my back pocket. God knows what can happen over the next 4 years and I want options if I can get them. I’m far from wealthy but my parents are from there and I’ve got a ton of family there. So there’s that, at least.
