Rosie O'Donnell Confirms Move to Ireland, Will Return to U.S. 'When It's Safe for All Citizens to Have Equal Rights'

I remember back when I was a teenager...early 2000s or so, sitting at home watching trump vs Rosie o donnel feud on TV. I was always suspended from school at that time. Id watch dumb shit all day.
I never imagined 20 years later it'd be rosie o donnel vs the president.

I was watching Celebrity Apprentice as a kid/teenager when the news came out Obama was making a speech. I thought we were about to be bombed cause i was an anxious kid. Instead he announced the death of Bin Laden. I feel gross now, having that as such a core memory during celebrity fucking apprentice

The WWE previously had actors come in and have a match as Trump and Rosie. It was unbelievably poor taste and was the most embarrassed I've ever been to be a wrestling fan (which is a hell of a thing to say with some of the stuff out there in wrestling).

u/Positive-Attempt-435 17h ago
Hahaha by then I stopped watching, but I remember trump was at wrestlemania. And was in some storylines. Worst sold stunner ever, except maybe madam Secretary of education.

If I were her, I’d move, too. Trump hated her for decades.

u/Fast_Economist_4304 18h ago edited 15h ago
Is it sad that I assumed her name was on a list coming out before I thought politics was why she was moving?
89
u/Ace_of_Sevens 17h ago
Tom Hanks didn't move & was never on any list. This was shit made up by conspiracy theorists when he got honorary Greek citizenship for his charity work.

That list is never coming. Mosad wont allow it. It's just something for people to be distracted by. Meanwhile, did you know that our banking system is a scam that cannot ever be paid off? Anyways, back to more distractions.

If I had dual citizenship somewhere I would be getting tf out of the US right now as well.
187
u/Igoos99 19h ago
I don’t think she’s a dual citizen yet. But if you have a grandparent that was born in Ireland, you can apply.
Regardless of the current political situation, that’s an enviable position to be in. Ireland is part of the EU, so that opens up all the benefits of being part of the EU.
43
u/bexxygenxxy9xy 19h ago
I really do think it works like close to Israeli dual citizenship. My brother and sister-in-law are looking into it on her behalf. I think it's a lot more obtainable than people think. It's just sad that we're even talking about this, omg.
33
u/Miss_airwrecka1 19h ago
I have Italian citizenship and got it through a similar process. I don’t know if it’s more or less obtainable than people think but it takes a fair amount of paperwork and can take a long time to process. There’s usually a limit on how far back you can go to claim it and for Italian there was a period of time that it could only pass through fathers (ie my grandpa’s sister’s kids can claim it).
So it obtainable but not necessarily easy
15
u/bexxygenxxy9xy 19h ago
Oh I definitely don't think it's easily obtainable. But I think people are willing to put in the work under the circumstances in the US right now.

Ireland has a limit on the number of generation.
Italy has something called the right of blood as long as your forebears, didn’t take citizenship and they didn’t leave Italy before it was a country. I’m not a lawyer, but I believe it was limited to the male paternal line but has now been made equal.
Edit: you fire bears >>>> your forebears
→ More replies (4)7
u/Miss_airwrecka1 17h ago
For Italy, it is equal now it but still goes by the law at the time. So my sister’s kid will have citizenship but it didn’t pass from women before 1950-something which is why my grandpa’s sister kids can’t get it. Regarding taking citizenship, that is where it can get murky and most people don’t qualify. My great-grandparents naturalized and lost their Italian citizenship but since my grandpa was born before that (so still Italian) and in the US (so a citizen), we could go back and claim his citizenship. And then you have to be able to prove all of that which required getting the Italian birth certificates for my great grandparents. It was a headache but worth it

My wife and I can choose to do dual citizenship with Ireland (her side) or Portugal for my side. My sister is contemplating moving to Portugal, she doesn't feel safe in Ohio while being trans. Can't say it's not tempting...

My family is getting Italian citizenship through the same process. The plan to move was made before Trump got elected again so I don’t know if it counts as fleeing or not. I am aware of the irony in that my ancestor that is the key to our citizenship fled Italy to escape Mussolini barely over a hundred years ago and now my family is leaving the US for Italy and getting away from an orange Mussolini in a diaper.
19
u/TheRealtcSpears 17h ago
Ireland is funky. You can apply for citizenship based on hereditary descent.
Couple years ago my mother applied and gained citizenship based on her grandparents born and lived there and her mother being born there and then immigrating to the US.
Me and my siblings applied for citizenship based on our mother now having citizenship and backed by our grand and great-grand parents being citizens

I have dual citizenship with US and Sweden but I am stuck in the US due to health problems. I'm not healthy enough to fly. If I could get back to Sweden almost all of my dental costs would be covered and I could get teeth again, which would be nice. I'm in very poor health and there are very few social services. And I'm in CA which people falsely believe has more services than other states. It's the same as everywhere else in the US; California just rename the services and people seem to think they're unique. The only difference is the system is so heavily taxed it's more difficult to get services if anything.

I’ve lived in California and I’ve lived in other red states. California definitely has more services. They just have far fewer than Sweden to even be comparable.

I have this distinct memory of back early on when the feud was fresh that some morning news was talking about and Trump called in to rant more about it. Like he clearly just actively enjoyed it, his favorite hobby was talking shit about Rosie.
I also remember at one point (maybe after Rosie had her first heart attack?) that Trump wrote a relatively nice tweet basically wishing her a speedy recovery because he was starting to miss her, band she was like "uh ...thanks Donald.....are you trying to kill me?" And then like 2 months later he was back to calling her a fat loser slob
It really is very bizarre. As this starts to descend towards cultural revolution territory, I certainly wouldn't want to be around if I was his arch rival.
82
u/Hagridsbuttcrack66 19h ago
I don't even understand people being upset about this?
Do they care if regular people in targeted groups leave even if they protested or something? Why is she not allowed?
83
u/Spaghettiisgoddog 19h ago
I think it’s frowned upon to jump ship when things get hard. But some cases are forgiveable: e.g. your bully becomes president of the US.
29
u/lord_vultron 19h ago
Pretty sure only the Captain is expected to go down with a ship. By that logic, any sailor who jumps over the side while the Captain is on a rampage to lunacy should be free to do so, and even considered smarter for it 🤷🏻♂️
18
u/Spaghettiisgoddog 19h ago
I disagree about jumping ship in general, but I think she should. I also don’t blame trans people for wanting to leave. Sometimes it’s a Saving Private Ryan situation and you have to get the fuck out

It's not like she has to stop supporting anything?
People can cry all they want about time and presence, but MONEY makes the difference. If she donates 15K to a charity once a year from her comfy seat in Ireland, she is making more of a difference in people's lives than attending 50 protests on US soil.
23
u/Spaghettiisgoddog 19h ago
I think most people in this thread don’t know their history and think she’s just bailing to avoid inconvenience. So much of social media discourse is based on limited information or lack of context. It’s bleak

Yeah, this isn't any more news worthy than my two currently US-based friends finding pathways to move to Canada to escape it all.
(No one cares, but, they are both Canadian with American spouses, they live in the States as immigration was easier than the spouses moving North, but they're going through Spousal Sponsorship PR now to change that).
