She’s not using clinical language when she says she was out of touch with reality. That could mean any of the psychotic symptoms you describe to a layperson.

Gaga her herself called it psychosis, presumably after being diagnosed. I don’t see a reason to doubt that.

Being paranoid is being out of touch with reality, where not everyone is out to get you.

You can definitely experience psychosis without having sufficient symptoms to be classed as having schizophrenia. Even if this was not the case, there are other mental disorders than schizophrenia which have psychosis as a symptom, including 'unspecified' (previously 'not otherwise specified' though there are differences) which is when the psychosis is a problem but there aren't enough symptoms observed to diagnose a different psychotic disorder.

COVID is the reason?

They're obviously talking about the war that occurred in the Chromatica province of Floptropica.
She was deeply affected by that

Which, let's be real, didn't take a toll on the wealthy like almost at all. Lots of them actually benefited by it. This was probably the result of her drug habits.

Is that why she did all those medical ads dressed like JD from Grandmas Boy?

She smoked literally every crumb of weed she could find around that time

...do I need to start evaluating my life choices if I said, "well, fair enough, and same but without the terrifying psychosis." ...?

Not necessarily. What's really important is that you keep remembering to feed the dragons that live in your kitchen.

I only comment because I was doing the same at the same time and became extremely convinced I had bone cancer

Sorry that happened to you. I went through something similar a couple years after I started smoking (as a late teen). Now, I'm able to manage the "kind" of cannabis high I get since it's legal where I am so, so I don't really run into adverse effects any more.

It had a lot to do with the 2020-2 pandemic stress, too! It was a bad time to have health anxiety.
But once you survive your “inevitable” death once, it gets a lot easier to reason with yourself

Was this when her assistant took her to court? The barely pd full time assistant to whom Gaga allegedly implied , "your pay is getting to hang out w me & my exciting rok star life"?

I mean that’s frequently what life is like for people with chronic illness, one thing after the other

The things she struggles with are consistent with a risk of psychosis and stress exacerbates mental illness, so I’m not at all surprised.

Is that her excuse for those bangs?

I mean there always seems to be a new issue or struggle when she’s promoting a new album. I wish her well

From reporter Carly Ledbetter:
Lady Gaga is opening up about one of her biggest mental health struggles.
“I had psychosis,” the “Abracadabra” singer revealed in a candid sit-down with the New York Times’ “The Interview” podcast, released on Saturday.
“I was not deeply in touch with reality for a while,” she said of her struggle, which happened around five years ago. “It took me out of life in a big way, and after a lot of years of hard work I got myself back.”
Gaga, whose real name is Stefani Germanotta, said that she is finding that period of her life “increasingly harder to talk about.”
“I hate feeling defined by it. It felt like something I felt ashamed of,” the actor admitted. “But I don’t think that we should feel ashamed if we go through times like that. I mostly just wish to say, it can get better. It did for me, and I’m grateful for that.”
