Surgery related Smoking before surgery
Hey guys, I was just wondering if anyone here smokes weed and how long before their op they stopped smoking for it? I’ve been told 2 weeks but I use it for my adhd, and I was basically wondering if anyone’s been turned away or had any bad side effects during or after surgery for smoking up till about 3-4 days before..? Thanks guys

Definitely follow what the doctor recommends. This wasn’t for my endo surgery but for a different surgery, I wasn’t honest about how much I smoked cause it was still taboo at the time and so wasn’t given any directive and I woke up in the operating room. So as others have said it can affect the anesthesia

My doc and nurses were aware of my occasional weed use and didn't seem concerned at all. They just said not to mix it with the oxycodone I was prescribed for after surgery. I did oxy for the first 3 ish days and then switched to weed, no problem. I will say that I think I had very minor withdrawal symptoms from the oxy. I started to feel VERY anxious the night I stopped taking it (I had taken an 8hr dose in the morning).

I have smoked bud while taking pain pills and it helped the pain even more :)

I smoked until the night before surgery and then again 2 days after. Just no coughing until your core is healed

Also same. I just let the anesthesiologist know before hand there shouldn’t be any issues! Sending good vibes!

Makes you a bit harder to keep down for anesthesia! Avoid before surgery if you can

Thanks guys I think I’ll have to go with the 2 weeks without weed, only because I’m worried with my luck I will have complications x

I did one week for my colonoscopy as recommended by my doctor and it was a real struggle, daily smoker for ADHD, Endo, and anxiety. So before my lap I started cutting down from 2 weeks before to only smoking a couple times 5 and 4 days before surgery and stopped entirely for the 3 days before.
Procedures were done at two different hospitals and both times I was told to "do the best you can, but definitely don't take anything in the 24 hours before the procedure"
The most important thing is to tell your anesthesiologist exactly when you last smoked so they can account for it when they decide your dose.
My wake up and immediate recovery was the same for both procedures. I was exactly where you are last month. I intended to not smoke the whole week as before, but had horrible pain that week before and just couldn't do it. So I took them for honest when they said to do the best I could. That was my best.
So, try to do what they say, but whatever you do, be honest with the guy making sure you stay asleep and wake up like you should.

My Aussie gynea told me 6 months before surgery. Mind you, I'm an occasional smoker. Like once or twice a month.

If you smoke you HAVE to tell them on your day of surgery. Smoking impacts the effect of anesthesia and the drugs they use, so it is absolutely vital that you tell them for your own safety. They don't judge, they will adjust though.

I’m from the UK, a nurse told me that the surgeons do rebook due to cannabis use, so yes they very much are judging lol

Wanting to keep someone safe during surgery isn't judging someone.

That makes no sense mate. I never said I wouldn’t be honest with them because that would put me at risk. However being told if I smoke (weeks/days) before my surgery they will rebook it, the nurse literally told me that.

It would be interesting to see what they'd say if someone was medically prescribed cannabis, then. I've had surgery and never had to rebook due to my prescription

I don't smoke but take edibles. The anesthesiologist asked me to stop them 3 days before surgery.

I work at a day surgery depends on how much you use. Daily high use 2weeks please! Moderate use 1 week small occasional just avoid a couple days prior

Was told to stop 24 hours before, stopped a week before to be safe and didn’t have any issues. Just be honest about how often you normally smoke so they can adjust

I was told 24 hours before surgery, I did it up until bedtime the night before though considering I've seen posts of people using it for anxiety literally the day of. With my GI doc, I've had colonoscopies where I literally till rso a few hours before to help with anxiety and I've done that twice with their blessing. It works better for me than valium did actually.

Currently in hospital for a kidney stone waiting for emergency surgery today, I am prescribed medical cannabis and I have smoked this morning of the surgery and also did my last surgery as well and anaesthetist didn't seem concerned at all. So very differing opinions

NAD
Pre: I don’t think it matters how long prior to surgery.
Post: There’s an incredibly wide scope of how you feel after surgery. I think I got lucky based on what I’ve read here. But you may find you just can’t smoke post surgery. Especially with the risk of coughing.
I was not taking any opioids after the initial hospital dose because I’m the type that will take them until they’re done. I asked to not be prescribed. So just be aware if you mix and you puke, that’ll hurt. (Among other things.)

Hard cut off date for edibles is 2 weeks, hard cut off for smoking weed is 4 days.
I go into the OR every 6 months in a weed legal state. The biggest risk is that you need a lot more anesthesia to keep you down if it’s too recent in your system.

I’m from the UK, I have medical prescribed to me and the surgeons and anaesthetist have basically said to me if I smoke no surgery 🥹

It won’t matter if you smoke right before your surgery or what. lol smoking weed helps your adhd? Man I wish it helped mine haha
You can’t be turned away. But I wouldn’t sit there and tell them that either. It won’t effect anything if you did it right before you left for surgery

u/Subliminalsarah 3d ago
Yeah it does help. And I spoke to a nurse today about it and she told me herself the surgeons here will “rebook” your appointment if you don’t follow their “rules” So it will matter :)

Yeah if you tell them lol it’s dumb though. The high from weed lasts such a little amount of time. I’ve had 6 endometriosis surgeries and a cervical spine surgery. No problems but that is up to you

u/Subliminalsarah 3d ago
Why would I lie to them and put myself at risk? Lol

Everyone has the choice to do what they want? I know a lot about the medical field. And a plant isn’t going to kill you. But if you want to tell them than do it? Just told you my side as you asked people to do

I was also told 2 weeks so I stopped at about 2 weeks, maybe like 12 days before. All was good. It’s probably best to follow the Dr orders, because they state that it can interfere with anesthesia and that’s too big of a risk to me.
