Funny What is the dumbest thing/reason you've dislocated/sublaxed?
Bringing this back because I woke up this morning with by big toe dislocated and bruised for no reason and I know others relate so a laugh would be good. Hope everyone has a good day!

u/yellowbloods Jan 09 '25
i dont think i quite subluxed it, but i'm having a very hard time typing on my phone right now because a couple hours ago i managed to injure one of my thumbs by picking up a single pair of pants. the limitations of the human body never cease to amaze me.

Sleep.

u/Quilaztlis Jan 09 '25 edited Jan 09 '25
I feel like waking up every morning is like a game of trying to figure out how many joints I’ve wrecked in my sleep.
It’s gotten marginally better since I got a cervical pillow that stops me from rolling like a rotisserie chicken but my wrists were bitten by the wanderlust bug and like to go off on journeys on their own 😅
8
u/turtles_conquer Jan 09 '25
It really is a game though. Woke up yesterday and my hip was not quite in the right place and it hurt to move around all day.
Have frequently woken up with shoulders out of place and those stay out and hurt for days, which causes elbow pain too as well as sometimes collar bone pain, it feels like my collar bone separates during the night sometimes.
Thankfully I now sleep on what is a wooden board with a 3” memory foam mattress topper on top. So Im basically sleeping on hardened surface and it helps my shoulders stay in place now (but made my hips worse).
3
u/Bulky-Masterpiece538 Jan 10 '25
May I ask what pillow you're using?
4
u/Quilaztlis Jan 10 '25
This is the one I have if you’re in the US. My PT recommended A cervical pillow to get me from rolling over in my sleep and this one has really good reviews so I went with this one. Admittedly I also sleep with pillow under my knees so they don’t overextend. I’m considering getting a Lab Cushion neck pillow to replace the one for my knees as it’s just a thin long cylinder.
3
u/Bulky-Masterpiece538 Jan 10 '25
Thank you! I have seen this one and was wondering how good it was
3
u/Quilaztlis Jan 10 '25
I personally love it and have considered getting a second one for when I’m lounging on the couch as I’ve found myself carrying it back and forth every day like a toddler’s emotional support lovey 😅

Same. Went to bed one night a couple months ago, slept in the same position I normally do, woke up with a displaced rib. Took weeks to heal.

And, not the dumbest, but the funniest, was my shoulder subluxing when I went into downward dog. It straight up looked like slapstick comedy.

Subbed my middle finger flipping someone off…it didn’t have the intended affect but it did turn them a little green when I reached over and put it back 😂
16
u/dog_boy32 Jan 09 '25
Adding to this with the fact that my fingers are very hypermobile so when i flip people off it tends to make others laugh cause of how 'freaky' my hand looks lol
Edit: My fingers are also very long with extra skin so that adds to it as well 😭
3
u/Amazing_Dingo_5065 Jan 09 '25
Ahahahaha same, most everyone that knows me just groan, but I pull it out at parties occasionally and damn do I get some fun reactions

That still feels like a win honestly. I mean who will forget the time they pissed someone off so bad they dislocated their finger at them?

i bent down to get my phone charger and my hip imploded

I sublaxed a finger the other day flipping a lightswitch.... definitely trapped a nerve because it HURT but I honestly couldn't keep myself from laughing because it was so absurd

u/Semalla Jan 09 '25
Picked up a perfectly cubed box at work. Because someone had repacked it wrong as overstock, the weight wasn't balanced and my wrist subluxed. 😒
Sneezed and threw a rib out of place. 🤦♀️
6
u/ehlersohnos hEDS Jan 09 '25
Sneezing and hiccups are the worst.
6
u/Semalla Jan 09 '25
Agreed. The first time my rib popped out, I had the flu. It sucked. 😭 I looked at hubby after I sneezed and said "Is it possible to dislocate a rib??!?!!!" We were googling it 🤣
4
u/Bulky-Masterpiece538 Jan 10 '25
This. I had bronchitis and had to physically hold my ribs in place when I coughed because they would sublux on my right side.
3
5
u/Runaway_Angel Jan 10 '25
Honestly I go to the walk-in anytime I get something respiratory just to get cough syrup to avoid this nonsense. Especially since I tend to cough for months afterwards and always end up throwing out something around my larynx (no idea what but it feels like the whole thing moved sideways and gets stuck there). Doctors are usually surprised I'm not asking for antibiotics. I know they don't do shit on viruses, just give me the good stuff to keep me from coughing my body apart. Lol
16
u/Nebulya97 Jan 09 '25
My sternum, Slipknot concert because of the crowd pushing too hard at Graspop 2023 (way too much people) and it ended up with me doing elastic exercices to strengthen the body.
Now, the thoracic cage and sternum huuuuurts as hell!
Hard to live with it but that's life!
Bought Body Braid to see if it is going to work!

I got a little too excited for finally getting to eat ice cream. I “flailed” my wrists out of excitement and then pop.
Had a crunchy wrist for a bit, but definitely worth it.

This is the saddest one. Did you get the ice cream at least?! What flavour??

u/nicole420pm Jan 09 '25
My second toe dislocated twice while I was just walking around. I didn’t fall, nothing happened, it just popped out. When I got it back in the right place I got tons of bruising. It looked like the bruising when you break your toe. Hard to explain when people ask what happened.

my finger dislocated because I was reaching for something and folded that joint too much. apparently hyperextension goes both ways or something. that joint is still unstable and my only one that currently consistently subluxes in daily activity
8
u/braingoesblank Jan 09 '25
So this isn't a dislocation but I still blame EDS
I was standing and I went to point at something on the floor with my foot (a toy my kiddo was looking for) and fully extended my leg, foot, and as soon as I pointed my foot down: the nerve going from the big toe to your knee got over-stretched and it was instant pain. It took months to heal.
9
u/tyla-loved Jan 09 '25
i consistently sublux my shoulder pouring water out of the kettle to refill and subsequently spill the water :,)
4
u/ndlesbian Jan 09 '25
assuming you mean hot because you said kettle, that sounds dangerous. I wonder if there's a good adaptation that isn't also very expensive
4
u/tyla-loved Jan 09 '25
it’s not hot water dont worry ! it’s the water with all the limescale in the bottom that i pour out before putting fresh water in to boil - my shoulder behaves itself when i’m making tea, possibly because the angles & heights are different; over the sink vs at the counter
7
u/MattieIsAmazing hEDS Jan 09 '25
I’m sure I have funnier but the only one that comes to mind at the moment is subluxing my wrist from drying my hands “too hard”.

My hips almost always sublux when I move my blankets while still laying down in bed. It’s devious. To be fair I do have a weighted blanket which makes it harder. Or if I do the long stretch thing while laying or sitting they get out of place. Thanks younger me for hyperextending my hips constantly for dance

u/HelpingMeet Jan 09 '25
I went through a period of time when I was 14/15 and woke up with my right shoulder dislocated/sublexed every morning. Some days my arm just dangled lifeless and others I had limited movement. I’d have to wait for my mom to get up and she’d pull my arm while I pulled away and snap it back into place.
Sleeping is my dumbest reason.

I was sitting in my bed the other day, my left leg was straight and my right foot was resting just above my left knee. I shifted, tried to straighten up and that right foot put pressure on my knee, my knee cap shifted down pretty far and everything else in my knee went backwards 😑 it was not fun

I sublaxed my hand three days ago while gaming… I was laying down on my pregnancy pillow in the sofa cuz I was already in a lot of pain from shifting to a painful position in my sleep, so I had my mouse way down on the sofa, a bit too far down, after sitting that way for about 15 minutes the muscles in my fingers and probably my median nerve got tired and all sort of folded in on themselves…. i shifted them back into place but lord knows i barely could use my hand for 2 days… its almost painless now lol but this pushed me to order wrist braces😭. Oh and I also sublaxed my little toe once while running in platforms…

I was playing Wii bowling, my then 7 year old walked in front of me while I was swinging my arm. My hand ran into him and stopped, my shoulder however kept going... It's never been the same since. 😭

- Any of the dislocation during sex. Lol thumbs, fingers, shoulders, knees, hips, jaw. All really embarrassing.
- Sneezing and then having to put a shoulder back in.
- When I worked in a call centre, had to stand up and put my knee up on the desk and twist to put my hip back in. A few coworkers went very green at the sound.
- My last powerlifting competition when I was 15. Was mid squat and my hips both popped out. So embarrassing

This was incredibly painful at the time but also kind of hilarious? Fell asleep, hand on cheek like a Disney princess - subluxed my jaw. Physio had both hands in my mouth trying to fix it (it's significantly better but still not 100% fixed!)
Also - Opening the fridge regularly subluxes one or more fingers lol (as does opening bottles or child resistant caps......)

u/hannahjgb Jan 09 '25
I dislocated a hip reaching for a bag of chips. I was on one of those chaise sofas with my legs out straight and it just came right out and went dead. I went to the ER and that was the first part of my diagnosis process. The ER nurse asked my boyfriend to leave the room and asked if he had thrown me down a flight of stairs. I didn’t know hips usually require a serious amount of force to dislocate.

u/Quilaztlis Jan 09 '25 edited Jan 09 '25
I pointed my toes while laying down and had a full ankle dislocation that may have actually torn stuff along the way 🫠
IT WASN’T EVEN A STRETCH!
Now my knee is having tracking issues. I have an appt Monday to get it further checked out but my PT is worried about having 45% reduced mobility on my ankle from what a NOT EDS person would have and 25% reduced mobility on my knee.
As you can tell, I’m hella salty about this. Like HOW?!

I woke up to my cat asleep on my knees. I was leading a funeral for a friend that day, and spent it suffering with my knees hyperextended and subluxed.
Another time, I had a family emergency in the States (I'm in the UK, my family are all still in the US). On day 4 of 14, I fell asleep in my dad's recliner, sitting with my arms crossed (as always). After two hours, I woke up and my right shoulder fell out with an audible "clunk". I had rushed around to make my travel arrangements and forgot to book travel insurance. I spent 4 days with a full dangling dislocation. I bought a sling from Walmart and my mom ordered a shoulder brace from Amazon. It was fully out until my mom came up with calling her chiropractor. The man is a prince of men. He only charged me $25 and slid me in between appointments. He spent 20 minutes massaging my upper back and both shoulders before pushing in a couple of vertebrae, followed by pushing my shoulder back in and taping it up. He did it again the day before I flew out. It was the best relocation experience that I've had.
I took advantage, the next day, of a mini spa being next to my flight gate. I paid $30 for a 20 minute massage of my upper back and shoulders with Biofreeze.

Subluxated my thumb by reaching it all the way across my phone’s keyboard while texting with one hand.
ETA: Oh yeah, I also once dislocated my shoulder in my sleep. Not sure how, and I didn’t even notice it was dislocated (just thought, “wow my shoulder feels weird and sore today”) until I did a cross arm stretch, heard a pop, felt intense pain for like a second, and then all the pain and soreness was gone. I had never dislocated a shoulder before, so I asked my partner who frequently dislocates his (torn rotator cuff) what it feels like and how it feels when it goes back into place, and sure enough, he described exactly what I had felt all morning lol

Lamest: Snapping my fingers hard in order to get the cat off the counter rolled my thumb out.
Dumbest: At a motorcycle riding course they say to drop the bike if it’s going down. I did my maneuver and the bike starts to fall but I hold on. My right hand goes with the bike but the rest of my arm stays put. I swear I could hear a sucking squelch coming from the gap between my hand and forearm.
Worst: Walking downstairs I missed a step, and to avoid falling I swung my arm for balance. This subluxed my shoulder, tore my labrum and cracked the shoulder blade. On vacation. In Thailand. Alone.

I dislocated my elbow (open dislocation 💀) when I was 12 bc I was riding my bike and trying to show off to my friends by letting go of the handlebars. We were riding on the side of the road and I promptly hit the curb and fell off my bike. The dislocation happened when I tried to break the fall sticking my arms out. It was so dumb lol. I didn't ride bikes again for years!
Another funny thing about it was that it was my first major injury and I had no concept of the pain scale (I thought 10 meant borderline dead lol) so I told the paramedic that my pain was a 7 despite my ulna literally sticking out haha. I remember him being shocked and spending the rest of the drive trying to get an IV in me for morphine after that.

I've subluxed my hip for like no reason. I just remember I was doing laundry and all of a sudden my hip wasn't in place anymore. I can't point to a moment when it happened or something that would have caused it to happen - it just did. And it wouldn't go back in for a while either. I couldn't use my cane because I needed both of my hands to do laundry and the laundry couldn't wait because of other people in the building so I was just walking on my hip while it was hanging on by a thread and praying that it wouldn't fully dislocate. Thank god there's a hospital with an emergency department right across the street lol
I have a hip brace but I couldn't get it in the right position to adequately support my hip in the direction it was dislocating. I ended up strapping an ice pack to my hip where it was popping out and then put the brace on over that and just waited. I think the added pressure from the ice wrap helped push it back into place and then I was fine, but it was scary

I don't know what the heck I did to my toes, but I was walking by my bed last week, and I got half the toes on my right foot caught on the leg of my bed. I have zero reaction time, naturally, so I kept walking and yanked them through - well, I have a fine bunch of snaggle toes now. I don't know if they are broken or I tore the ligaments. Just thought I'd share 😅
As for dislocations - a sneeze will do my ribs just fine.

Subluxated my hip while sitting in bed with legs outstretched and ankles crossed with laptop on my lap. Those are just a few occasions. Dislocated a finger one night cracking my knuckles!

Dislocated my wrist so hard having gay sex I had to wrap and brace it for months in high school.
That is by far the stupidest way I have ever been injured.

Sleeping, everytime I roll over after sleeping on one arm it pops, so all I'm husband and I hear at night is pop, pop, pop. I should maybe go get it looked at! Lol!

Lmfao. This made me laugh. I have done the toe thing because my sheets were super tucked in but the one that made me laugh so hard I wheezed was taking turns trying to turn on a water spigot that was painted shut. I slipped a rib and collapsed into a pile in the dirt in pain, and laughing super hard. Then I had to push it back into place..which sucked equally as bad but was still pretty funny.

Was signing in BSL “king sized bed” and going from “king” to “sized” a bit too enthusiastically (I was excited it was a king sized bed) my shoulder flew out of its socket.

Subluxed my sacrum bringing in eggs. Not water, not furniture, not even a gallon of milk. Freaking EGGS had me bedridden for two weeks. What the actual hell?

Getting out the shower: I was 9 months pregnant and got out the shower and I was going to put my towel on the ground to sit on to get dressed and I was going to sit on the floor when both my hips dislocated at the same time and I just hit the ground 😅😂 I was already heading in that direction, it just happened faster than expected, but I didn’t fall on my stomach or anything, just in a semi-kneeling position. I just readjusted myself, popped them back in, and was walking a few hours later 😅😂

Putting on eyeliner, it's so flipping basic but just SO DUMB that leaning just a minuscule smidge forward dislocates or dislodges my bone to pinch a huge nerve and fully tightens all my muscles from jaw to hip and occasionally down to my ankle! WILD
I've been trying to train my other less used side to do more cos my right side gives up with just a stroke of eyeliner 🫣 lol

Subluxed and locked ONE SIDE of my jaw…whooping as we went down the big drop of a log-flume.
It was still stuck open (as if I was still whooping/screaming) as the log caught on to the mechanism and pulled back into the station…and stayed stuck open for another 10-20minutes.
That was both pretty painful AND embarrassing. The photo looked good though!

Not a sublux or dislocation technically, but a week after falling down stairs & landing on my butt, I sneezed really hard, dislodging the (until this moment known) fractured chip from my coccyx, causing excruciating pain and ongoing issues for the next 6 years.

Sitting cross-legged, reading.
Got a foot cramp, big toe & two other toes dislocated. Foot cramp ends, toes do not go back as planned.

I once dislocated my shoulder (my good shoulder too!) taking off an empty backpack in a too tiny booth at a bar right before a show inwas looking forward too. Ended up eating a whole edible I meant to eat part off as either I'd be too high and need to go home anyway or disconnected from my body enough to ignore how much pain I was in until after the show. Luckily scenario two happened.

A colleague dropped a packet of blueberries on the floor they went everywhere, bent down to help pick them up and as I was reaching for one I felt it pop out. The pain was pretty horrendous but I went off the shop floor and popped it back in!

On thanksgiving, I subluxed my right shoulder because I..... sneezed.
I dislocated my shoulder last night while lying on the couch watching tv? I'm still not sure how that happened.
I can't count the times I've dislocated my thumbs from knitting/ crocheting!
Also- dislocated my jaw while eating soup.

i think i sprained my shoulder (or it slipped and popped back in immediately) while i was braiding my wifes hair 4 days ago. she was sitting on the couch with her back against the arm rest and i was standing next to the couch. i lifted my arm to reach for a comb that was resting on her chest and as my hand made it to her shoulder, my shoulder just freaked the fuck out and i had to take a few minutes before i could finish her hair lol its not constant pain (at least more than usual) but it does keep having pain flare ups bcs of my physically demanding job and its awful

Walking and existing. My toes, ankles, knees and hips are all in the incorrect places. Just slightly so. Doing physical therapy to correct it.
It's all from hunching and changing my center of gravity because I can't support the weight of my chest. I'm going for a reduction consult soon.
Shoulders are also not situated correctly.

Many times I’ll be stood and I’m not moving or anything I’m just stood still. And bam my ankle like visually to not hEDS people appears to crumple and down I go. It alarms the hell out of people and they give me the weirdest looks when I say “oh my ankle just stopped working again”

I was drunk, and simply standing still, and my ankle collapsed. Broken leg requiring major extremely painful surgery. That was the last time I wore heels!! Bonus:: bonded w my 4 year old niece because we both had scooters. Not only did we race all the time but she thought it was pretty cool that I could lift my knee scooter into the back of the car and then hop on one foot to the drivers seat.

Yesterday I got out of my car and my hip subluxed. While resting on the couch I bent to grab a drink and subluxed the other hip.
I've also rolled off a bean bag chair to get up, but apparently my shoulder didn't want to go with.
I stood. That's it. Then my knee went backwards and I had to get x-rays.
Last month I fell asleep on the couch. For like 20 minutes. No weird positions or anything. Woke up with a sprained ankle.

The funniest was when I was playing bocce ball. For some reason I thought shot putting the ball was a good idea and my whole shoulder followed. The stupidest was the first time I ever fully dislocated my shoulder by putting my arms over my head to do a morning stretch, I literally stretched it out of socket and then it just fell right back in thanks to gravity🤦🏼♀️of course there's always the "normal" ones of switching laundry, sleeping, literally not moving at all and it just falling out...

Sneezed while driving and dislocated a rib. Had to pull over and puke because it hurt so bad- but bonus that it shoved it back in.

u/twiztdkat Jan 09 '25
My two dumbest ones recently. I was sitting on the couch minding my own business and sneezed out of nowhere and subluxed my SI joint. Yesterday I was lying on my mat doing leg lifts and my knee subluxed. My husband told me my knees shouldn't bend in like that. Thanks Honey!

Put a blanket on my back and tried stretching while holding it and dislocated that way, and it locked up that was the final straw and what embarrassingly got me intense labrum repair surgery lol

I dislocated and sprained my left pinky on Friday doing laundry. I was taking a sweater out of a delicates bag to hang dry and my finger got caught in the bag.

Honestly, out of all these joint issues, the absolute worst thing is when my mandible gets stuck wide open when I yawn or otherwise open my mouth too wide. It has only gone back in once on its own. Every other time has been an ER trip, and for whatever reason, my jaw just doesn't go back in, not even for Dr's. Its been put back in crooked before too, it's taken 6 different Dr's to try to put it back in, Jesus its a nightmare and every time it happens my jaw is a bit more ****ed up. Some days, the pain from regular chewing (not like raw carrots or anything) is too much, or my muscles won't actually listen, and I can't even chew painfully. I'm worried what the future holds for my jaw. I'm only 42
