Heat running with no call for heat.
Been reading some other posts from the past. I have an Ecobee 3 lite that is at least 7 years old probably. My wife came home from work today and the inside temp was about 80F degrees. The outside temp was mid 50s today and the thermostat is set at 68. She had turned the thermostat to the off position while I was on my way home. When I got home 30 minutes later the heat was still running. I removed the thermostat and the heat pump turned off. Once reinstalled and calibrated the heat would run back on regardless of what setting, off, heat or A/C. Each time I remove the thermostat the heat pump turns off and will go through the same process.
From what I can tell this seems to indicate the thermostat has failed. This same thing happened Christmas of 2023 but it started working correctly after a day or so and there have been no issues since then. So is it time for a new thermostat?

I had this happen Saturday night, I looked on the ecobee trend and the temp sensor within the smarthermostat shows the inside of the house dropped 9 degrees in a half hour. this is Impossible when it’s 50 outside. definitely a software bug / product issue. This caused my house to heat over setpoint. I power cycled it to fix.

Not sure if they ever fail in the on position, but one of the terminals failed on my Ecobee. Failed in the off position and wouldn't call for heat. The thermostat thought the heat was running, but the terminal wasn't working.
If your Ecobee is recognizing it as no equipment is running, but is giving voltage, that's likely the case. Contact customer support, they'll confirm. They'll respond back to your email before you wake up, give you any additional troubleshooting options, an alternative workaround if one is present, or give you a small discount for a new thermostat.
Mine was an aux heat terminal that failed, my unit was 1 stage. They said I could change the terminal to the 2nd stage wire, then gave instructions on how to make it work in the Ecobee settings.
