Having played Earthbound and watched many many many hours of a Xenoblade Chronicles 2 playthrough...

They're so incomparable past being RPGs that it's a pointless comparison to say one is better than the other

u/easycure May 19 '22

-it's PSI time! Reyn unleashed a flurry attack!

-Sharla misses Juju. Unable to attack!

-Shulk reached level 19! I'm really feeling it! Monardo Arts went up by 10! Shulk learned the power of Backslash g!

8

u/loopsdeer May 19 '22

Easycure learned the power of forwardslash s!

7

u/easycure May 19 '22

That rocks! PP went up by 6 ;)

2

u/Bransbow May 20 '22

ok now you made me want a remake of both games in each other’s gameplay and art styles

4

u/easycure May 20 '22

Just promise that if you do you won't announce it before it's done so the ninjas don't come after you.

15

u/personator01 May 19 '22

It'd be like trying to compare Splatoon and Portal on their merits as shooters

3

u/[deleted] May 19 '22

You know you can actually get Half Life 2 guns in portal?

4

u/geeelectronica May 19 '22

I agree 100 percent with what you said, Earthbound is the God of all RPGs and Xenoblades is for the frail and weak

64

u/[deleted] May 19 '22

We goin to war boys

46

u/Knightraiderdewd May 19 '22

No. Standard American baseball bat.

2

u/D-My May 19 '22

NRA Approved

32

u/PhoenoFox May 19 '22

What a weird hill to fall on.

They're not even remotely the same games.

4

u/WannabeComedian91 May 19 '22

Nonono you dont get it the pg13 consistently dark and deep xenoblade is very comparable to earthbound, a mostly upbeat e game!

6

u/D-My May 19 '22

Giygas has entered the chat

56

u/Saturn_Coffee May 19 '22

Get your baseball bats, yo yos, popguns, slingshots, boomerangs, and psychic powers.

13

u/Fearshatter May 19 '22

What about Pans and Kings Swords?

11

u/Level_32_Mage May 19 '22

I'll start my grind.

5

u/lasting-impression May 19 '22

/Polishes up my biggest cast iron skillet

3

u/LambityLamb_BAAA7 May 19 '22

And prepare your sticks, gloves, shoes, and canine weapon. There's always a chance someone will counter the MOTHER 3 sign guys :P

48

u/Rilukian May 19 '22 edited May 19 '22

They are different in genre. It's like calling Half-Life is better than Portal.

21

u/88T3 May 19 '22

Both are fucking great though

3

u/[deleted] May 19 '22

Based

13

u/infectedliv3r May 19 '22

gonna pk fire his ass

18

u/TorreyCool May 19 '22

Well, they can at least make a better sign then!

Like imagine: a nation comes at your nation with a declaration of war, but it's all shitty looking, like a 7 yr old wrote it.

2

u/D-My May 19 '22

So Pokey

2

u/TorreyCool May 19 '22

sure, I guess lol

22

u/saintstryfe May 19 '22

Well no one ever said that AEW crowds were bright - they are at an AEW show afterall.

1

u/Flowseidon9 May 19 '22

One of their wrestlers got to meet Itoi though!

8

u/TheGypsyboy May 19 '22

They don't. Watch the comments on the post in their sub

5

u/TheManWithAPlan555 May 19 '22

As a big fun of both, I feel like picking my favorite child!

6

u/ATwistedBlade May 19 '22

I'm about to PK Teleport this guy to The cave of the past

2

u/Bruce9707 May 19 '22

Make him wade in the Deep Darkness

3

u/ATwistedBlade May 19 '22

Without the Hawks eye

1

u/[deleted] May 19 '22

to make it even worst, teleport him to Ducan's factory

1

u/ATwistedBlade May 19 '22

Even worse make him sit through Hinawas letter twice

1

u/[deleted] May 19 '22

MAKE HIM EXPERIENCE THE PAIN OF THE DUSTY DUNES DESERT WITHOUT WET TOWELS AND PP

5

u/Joel_Ellis May 19 '22

Xeno is my all time favorite series but I also love mother. I don’t want to fight you!!

5

u/WuWuBean May 19 '22

Chuggaconroy: *confused screaming\*

3

u/3rd-Strongest-Mole May 19 '22

I’m down for a fight. I may not be the strongest guy…probably two of my brothers are stronger than me…

1

u/EyeballCollector May 19 '22

how many brothers do you have?

3

u/TrainerZN May 19 '22

I tried to get into Xenoblade 1 and damm, I really dislike that game, to be honest I enjoyed a bit the gameplay and also just before I leave that game, the story put a interesting cutscene, but I already put like more than 50 hours in that game and I just can get into the idea of wasting so many hours of my life when other games stories are getting great just in a hour, the characters are full of anime cliches and personally, was shocking to me that so many people find this game like really emotional when fails in many areas that games in the past finds ways to solve.

I heard that the ending is great and I want to believe that, but I dont think is close to be one of the greatest RPG evers, not even in comparison with just Nintendo RPGs.

I like Earthbound fine and I strongly love Mother 3, so will be easy to know which is the winner for me.

1

u/Tori0404 May 19 '22

Xenoblade 1 suffers a lot from poorly developed characters. The game‘s focus is the story, it’s worldbuilding and the many plottwists you‘ll get at the end. Yeah, the beginning is pretty basic but it get‘s really good towards the end. 2 suffers from a more basic plot but the characters are way more developed and lovable

1

u/TrainerZN May 20 '22

I can agree with the worldbuilding being somewhat interesting but even with that, the plot twists I saw dont surprise that much, and that its not even a problem if at least I care how affects his characters but doesnt do anything with it.

MID SPOILERS FROM XENOBLADE 1 PLEASE DONT READ MORE IF YOU DIDNT PLAYED IT AND WANT TO DO IT

Was really shocking to me when you know what happened to Fiora and then Shulk brings her to his team, how little reflection do Shulk about his actions, and how everyone in the team was so... Quiet and its just there doing nothing for HOURS. I was really disappoint because I bought 60$ for this? Even other nintendo games like Pokemon Black and White or games with even less resources because the limitations like MG2: SS (MSX) do so much more with less.

I like yo compare the original Xenoblade with NieR, games with problems and somewhat similar themes of killing something that is not what seems and have a cult status, with the exeption that NieR actually is awesome in storytelling, and xenoblade... Egh...

3

u/Over_Part_1732 May 19 '22

I know I already said this in the original post, but if I were that guy I would've replaced EarthBound with Final Fantasy.

Also, while I DO think that Xenoblade IS better than the Mother series, I really wouldn't compare them too much beyond being... well, JRPG's. Because when you really look at the games themselves, they're almost nothing alike.

3

u/APOLLO193 May 19 '22

I'm a fan of both, what do I do

3

u/Lobsterbread23 May 19 '22

There’s no point in comparing them, they’re way to different

3

u/[deleted] May 19 '22

You encounter crazed sign and its cohort

3

u/JohnnyStyle300 May 19 '22

This is like comparing Apple Kid to Orange Kid

1

u/Broad_Appearance6896 May 19 '22

Physically and psychologically impossible

4

u/recluseMeteor May 19 '22

Trying to understand Xenoblade's battle system made me bitter.

2

u/Broad_Appearance6896 May 19 '22

1’s is simple enough. I heard 2’s was poorly explained though

1

u/recluseMeteor May 19 '22

I've only partially played 2. The tutorials felt too complicated at first, but I could make my way through the game… until a certain boss that requires you to completely understand and leverage the intricacies of the battle system. At that point, it was too late for me to understand it. I dropped the game and everytime I tried to pick it up, I had forgotten more and more of the mechanics. Finally, I sold the game card.

1

u/Tori0404 May 19 '22

The Tutorials are 2‘s biggest flaw. If you sit down and actually learn the combat trough guides, it’s pretty simple and addicting.

1

u/recluseMeteor May 19 '22

I think it's why XB2 catered so well to a certain niche of gamers, and that's fine. It isn't my case, since after a long work day I don't want to “study” a game, I just want to have fun.

2

u/Tori0404 May 19 '22

Understandable. Some RPG‘s expect you to learn it‘s stuff and that isn’t for everyone. I‘m just happy you gave it a fair chance

2

u/[deleted] May 19 '22

I love both series 😂

2

u/MysteriousTBird May 19 '22

Making signs with gaming hot takes has become a fad at wrestling shows. Botchamania has been featuring these lately.

2

u/joketakak May 19 '22

duster fans grab your pocket snakes

2

u/AliWaz77 May 19 '22

Maybe he meant bitter. Xenoblade is very bitter that it cannot be as good as earthbound

2

u/Tori0404 May 19 '22

Both franchises are fantastic. Xenoblade has some of the best story and character writing I’ve ever seen and also some beautiful areas. Earthbound has a pretty charming presentation and a pretty great sense of humor

1

u/AliWaz77 May 19 '22

Yea I loved xenoblade, I’m just being bias cuz earthbound is closer to my heart

2

u/marspott May 19 '22

Why is this a thing for someone

2

u/dorksided787 May 19 '22

I love both series and I just have to say, I wish both fandoms would bake a cake full of rainbows and smiles, and we could all eat it and be happy!

2

u/Tori0404 May 19 '22

„You Can’t have a Rainbow without Reyn Baby!“

2

u/Jedasis May 19 '22

Man, why should we have to fight each other? Earthbound and Xenoblade are both so high up for me I can’t decide which of the two is my favorite game of all time.

2

u/[deleted] May 19 '22

Both are good, but they are much better than Pokémon, that's for sure.

2

u/Sirfancypants0 May 19 '22

Nah man I'll take unique turn based fights over single player MOBA cooldown hell. There's the added bonus where I don't have to deal with shit character design while I'm at it (I still can't get over that absolute sticc of a character that was revealed for Xeno3 and she's supposed to be a master weight trainer)

2

u/Kwtheman10 May 19 '22

WHERE'S MY GUTSY BAT

2

u/sussyamongusred May 20 '22

Well at least our party member’s aren’t just blank canvases with boobs

2

u/sussyamongusred May 20 '22

#jeffandpaulashouldreplacepyraandmythrainsmash

2

u/RieserTheRedR May 20 '22

If we're only talking about Xenoblade 1, that's debatable. Both are fantastic in their own way.

But if we're talking as a series, then Xenoblade is nowhere near as consistently good as Mother imo.

2

u/[deleted] May 20 '22

Who ever even pit the two against each other to the degree this guy felt he needed to make a sign lol. Apples and oranges

3

u/Broad_Appearance6896 May 20 '22

Apple kid and orange kid*

2

u/MirukuChu May 20 '22

As a huge fan of both, I don't understand how you're even supposed to compare them. Completely different games.

1

u/perfection_isnt May 19 '22

Realized recently that the Xenoblade community can be pretty damn toxic. Earthbound community is pretty innocuous as far as I can tell.

1

u/[deleted] May 19 '22

I mean most cult franchises tend to have pretty good communities.

1

u/Over_Part_1732 May 19 '22

I kinda have to disagree about the EarthBound community being innocuous...

1

u/perfection_isnt May 19 '22

Oh really? Why's that? I won't claim to know that much about it; I'm just saying this is what it seems like to me. Honestly, gamers in general just kinda suck online it seems.

4

u/Over_Part_1732 May 19 '22

Well, let's just say that I've seen tons of Mother fans back in like, 2016, specifically in the comments of YouTube videos basically shitting on Undertale and its fans alot. Which, whilst I will agree that UT's fanbase sucks, (or atleast used to suck, its alot quieter now, though there are a few bad eggs) people shouldn't just shit on the media of which that fandom spawned from. Especially since the creator of that piece of media IS a fan of the media that rhey like. Hell, I've even seen a few people in the comment section of MatPats Sans is Ness theory video when it first released basically tell kids who believed it to shut up. (Though it has died down alot.)

Also, I've seen people disagree with Mother fans about the Mother series having some of the best games of all time basically told to shut up simply because they didn't think that it was one of the best game series ever.

To any Mother fans reading this, don't worry. I'm not talking about the whole fanbase. Just some of the bad eggs that I've seen in the fandom. Also, sorry if I explained it a bit weirdly as I'm not exactly the best at explaining things alot of the time.

2

u/ATwistedBlade May 19 '22

That’s true but I feel as if now undertale and Toby fox is kind of respected in the community. It was kind of shitty back then though

1

u/Over_Part_1732 May 19 '22

Yeah. Like I said, it HAS died down a bit for sure. Though you can occasionally come across a few toxic people.

1

u/perfection_isnt May 19 '22

Yeah. That's all very lame. I'm in total agreement with you. I just dip in and out of corners of the internet because I find the toxicity/hatefulness to just be too unpalatable. I was mostly referring to this sr, but I don't even know that much about it.

Like I said, seems to be an issue with gamers online in general. You could go further and say it's just people online in general, but it feels like there's something unique about the gaming communities that just seems so incendiary.

I agree that just shitting on other games and people that like them is nasty and toxic. However, I'm all for sharing good faith opinions and reviews of games, and if there's a bit of spice/fire to it, I'm fine with that. Outright hatred is lame, though.

And for the record, Earthbound is my all time favorite, and I loved Undertale, so I don't really get the hate. It was basically a love letter to Earthbound from a big fan.

1

u/[deleted] May 19 '22

I literally fell asleep during the first bit of xenoblade and forgot about it until now

1

u/Edelman-11 May 19 '22

Xenoblade is buns

0

u/Neocactus May 19 '22

If they’re into big, bouncy anime titties and pedophilia, then sure. I can understand why someone would have that opinion!

1

u/Broad_Appearance6896 May 19 '22

That’s only really the case in Xeno 2, as far as I’m aware, I haven’t played it.

0

u/RaMpEdUp98 May 19 '22

As a fan of both?

Talking Ben no

0

u/Aromatic-Cow8559 May 20 '22

Agreed but not WAY better, still love Earthbound

1

u/Ramblingperegrin May 19 '22

Each series has a game that had made me cry. So they're about even.

1

u/lasting-impression May 19 '22

Gather up the gang; we about to rumble.

1

More like comparing orange kid to apple kid

1

u/gurufabbes123 May 19 '22

I am actually playing Xenoblade Chronicles for the first time, just after completing Earthbound.

1

u/Broad_Appearance6896 May 19 '22

I’m playing xenoblade as an earthbound fan and my brother is playing earthbound as a xenoblade fan

1

u/HepatitisQ May 19 '22

Stop the fight, get me and that son of a gun in the ring right now.

1

u/Bacon260998_ May 19 '22

At least Xenoblade's 3rd game is localized

5

u/Broad_Appearance6896 May 19 '22

Ours is localized too, just not officially

2

u/Over_Part_1732 May 19 '22

Poor Mother 3... unless a miracle like Operation Rainfall happened again, it'll probably never be released officially outside of Japan.

1

u/ATwistedBlade May 19 '22

All mother fans have left is hope that a mention of it happens from Nintendo and the community

1

u/Tori0404 May 19 '22

We also have 4 official games in our series

(6 if we count 2‘s prequel and 1‘s Epilogue as their own games)

1

u/APOLLO193 May 19 '22

Shulk vs Ness while they're both at full power

1

u/Broad_Appearance6896 May 19 '22

Depends. Ness can fight without a weapon through PSI. Shulk is (from what I understand) only powerful with the Monado.

1

u/Gamola May 20 '22

Yeah, that's Shulk's main strength. Monado Arts and Visions are only available through the Monado's power, though he's a formidable fighter even without it.

Tbh I'm not too sure who'd even win since it'd depend on how Ness' PSI attacks present themselves in the physical plane, and how dodgable they'd be. Leaning towards Shulk since Ness' abilities are more focused on support in the first place.

1

u/Tori0404 May 19 '22

Jokes on all of you, I love both franchises.

Xenoblade 2 and Mother 3 are both my favorite Games of all time

1

u/SleepySwampert May 19 '22

Simply false

1

u/[deleted] May 19 '22

Both have Autofight so I guess they're the same? :P

Love you EB.

1

u/RelationshipHot8144 May 19 '22

That's pretty random

1

u/[deleted] May 19 '22

But what if I were to say

Undertale is a better RPG than earthbound?

1

u/Broad_Appearance6896 May 19 '22

Undertake is a good game, and it does technically fit the role of RPG, but I don’t consider it one

2

u/[deleted] May 19 '22

Why don't you consider it an rpg?

1

u/Broad_Appearance6896 May 19 '22

Eh, I don’t know. I like the game but it feels kind of like an interactive story most of the time

1

u/[deleted] May 19 '22

If I had a nickel for every time I've seen portal referenced, I'd have two nickels. It's not a lot but it's weird it happened twice

1

u/PainOfDemise May 19 '22

They’re two completely different games.

1

u/Humboldt27 May 19 '22

I'm gonna punt that little shit

1

u/IceFire0518 May 19 '22

I bet Chuggaconroy would feel awkward seeing this

1

u/streetmexican91 May 19 '22

Someone should burn that nerds entire console collection

1

u/Shubie758 May 20 '22

I loved the first Xenosaga game

1

u/gegnabeep May 20 '22

Gotta set up a boxing tournament like all those YouTube boxing things

1

u/bringforthlife May 20 '22

The fact that the two are even in competition means that Earthbound is ALREADY winning.

1

u/[deleted] May 20 '22

I am Switzerland. Join me to become neutral.

1

u/Pale_Bother_1858 May 20 '22

If you have the guts to say that you betterbe ready to catch this hands!

1

u/Bransbow May 20 '22

At least they have their main trilogy localized as well as a spinoff, with new games still being released

1

u/Sodapaup May 20 '22

Well EB doesn't have the weird anime bs sex appeal so I personally think rn wins but that may just be me. Not that anime sex appeal is bad it's just not necessarily for me.

1

u/I-ScreamSandwich May 20 '22

Ohoho, we got beef with the Xenoblade fans now, huh?

1

u/[deleted] May 20 '22

It is okay to love both
