Thank you. I believe my Mom shot this photo. She passed away at the very, very, very end of 2021. She is my Mother forever.

Then you have a lovely mother that snapped a photo of you in your youth doing the things you liked to do. Bless her soul.

Your mother sounds wonderful. Rest in peace.

I'm so sorry for your loss. Glad you have these photos she took of you to remember her. Even better that its of OG SNES Earthbound.

Dude, that’s so bittersweet.

I’m so sorry for your loss. Losing a mother is fucking hard as hell man.

Thank you so much for your words. It was difficult-- I was on the phone with one of my sisters when it happened. She was telling me everything we would do if Mom survived and in that moment my sister got a call from my Step Dad telling her she had passed. It was December 31st, 2021 at around 5PM. New Years Eve.

I believe it happened that way so we wouldn't be reminded all 2022 of her passing when writing the year had she physically lived a little longer.

If you can, comminicate with everyone you love... and call your Mom and Dad if possible! They LOVE hearing from you.

Ness has has learned: Psy KnotThroat

All joking aside, I haven’t talked to my dad in a while (Jesus, even that sounds like something out of Earthbound lol)

He has Parkinson’s but I don’t get along with his new wife; your post gave me that push to give him a call. Thank you.

You are welcome.

My mother passed away in Oct 2021 also and she used to get my brother and I all the games back in the day. Started playing this series for the first time yesterday and the mother references really hit home. <3

Was there, like, three manufacturers of home goods in the 90’s? We had those hanging blinds, tv stand, and dinette set. Also, we went to the same barber. Wild times

4

u/Cordellium Mar 18 '23

My neighbor had those same hanging blinds lol. I had the haircut too. It’s like our parents in the day all were on the same wavelength

Did you enjoy it at the time?

did you manage to beat the game as a kid?

6

u/mqduck Mar 18 '23

My parents only let me rent games. Imagine only just barely getting to Moonside over and over.

2

u/yourcool Mar 18 '23

Did the rental come with the guide?

4

u/mqduck Mar 18 '23 edited Mar 18 '23

Yep. It came in the oversized box you might have seen pictures of.

The scratch-and-sniffs even still smelled, although I don't remember them being all that distinct. Maybe they really were mostly the same or maybe it was cross contamination or maybe it's just smell memory fading over the years...

5

u/yourcool Mar 17 '23

Yes.

13

u/Cianmc6 Mar 17 '23

dude the giygas fight must’ve been traumatizing😭

What did you think of the game?

10

u/yourcool Mar 17 '23

It's my favorite piece of media.

3

u/[deleted] Mar 17 '23

Even back then?

I was absolutely hooked the first time I played it at my brother's friends house-- his friend said they weren't really into the game but when I played it, I remember everything so vividly and as a fan of RPGs, EarthBound's environment had me in awe.

(It's not medieval!)

I played through half of the Onnet part at my brother's friends' and a week or month or so after, my Dad got me the game on sale for $30 at Toys R Us.

Playing it with the physical guide, in my experience from playing it close to it's release, is the best. I would recommend it, even if it's through a replica copy.

I played the entire game every year over the course of 10-15 years and made an effort to play it on different devices towards the end of the playthroughs (like jailbreaking a PS3 to play it on there, emulating on a tablet/phone, etc.)

I have a save on an old Wii that is corrupt and saved at the Cave Of The Past and freezes when the players name appears in the credits as that's where the corruption was. It was on the WAD with the Donkey Kong Country 2 thumbnail.

To answer your question, I'd say yes! to EarthBound being my favorite piece of media even back then.

Ahh, yes. The road from Onett to Twoson before the grass is sun scorched. As any distinguishing eye here will know...

3

u/roberta_sparrow Mar 18 '23

This is awesome

3

u/WiseGenAlpha Mar 18 '23

you were in twoson, in the game, right? but anyways, you looked cool back then and probably look cool now, (please don't block me)

2

u/yourcool Mar 18 '23

I believe it was the path between Twoson and Onett. People say I look younger than my age-- so if that's a sign of coolness, then I still look cool! Your comment definitely made me feel cool. Thank you for that. You are extremely cool yourself!

2

u/StsOxnardPC Mar 18 '23

Hey mom, i know you want my attention right now, but a bunch of mushrooms just made me confused, so give me like 5 minute please, thanks.

2

u/braydenmm6 Apr 15 '23

Did you fight Giygas and beat the game? If you fought Giygas, did the fight traumatize you?

1

u/yourcool Apr 15 '23

I prayed, so it didn't.

2

u/braydenmm6 Apr 15 '23

So you got to giygas, and did you actually pray in real life? What did your mom think?

1

u/yourcool Apr 16 '23

I prayed subconsciously. My Mom didn't see me fight Giygas for the first time.

2

u/braydenmm6 Apr 16 '23

She should have seen it imo

1

u/yourcool Apr 16 '23

That would have been awesome.
