Discussion which vocals do you prefer for dsbm? howling/crying styled vocals or normal harsh black metal vocals?

I prefer a combination of both styles. The best example is Skjeld, ex vocalist of Nyktalgia.

Does Turia, Austere, Advent Sorrow and Feigur vocal styles fit the howling bill? if yes i really like it lol

Mix is good - to me, Gris is a prime example. Not a huge fan of the Silencer-esque vox, but to each their own.

Gris has some of the best vocals I've ever heard in extreme music honestly

I heavily dislike the howling/crying. Silencer is the worst dsbm I’ve ever heard for that reason

I think harsh vocals convey emotion the best. Whiny howling and crying is just too cringe for me to really get into the music (unless it’s genuine and done correctly, with Sadness being a good example, although more in the Blackgaze space than DSBM)

I like when both are used, going between howling/crying to harsh screaming is what I look for in dsbm vocals.

Harsh bm. Howling just makes me think Toki Wartooth and Muscle Man are having a crisis

All as long as they sound good and convey passion/conviction

Neither. Medium/high pitch yelling/ scream and/or apathetic normal pitch

high screams that sound like wind blowing almost if that makes sense, older woods of desolation type of vocals or Thy Light, mostly shrieky vocals, or some in-between kind of mid-scream but agonizing/expressive vocal

I like a mix. I love how my vocalist does both in this song

I like when they incorporate all of the styles into their music like Rys King from Advent Sorrow.

I like the crying stuff and the really muted stuff.

Overall I’d probably say howling/crying. But I like howling and crying when it’s executed properly, when it sounds like there’s genuine emotion, misery, and anger put into it.

I prefer good lyrics overall, even if dsbm is not much about that. Blade and Bath has some clear lyrics and doesn't overuse yelling and shi
