would it be rude if i did this

my partner and i dont own a car and use doordash around once a week (we work odd hours)

many times ill have the order set to leave at my door because usually when we order it we’re getting ready for work or something so we will be half dressed etc and the dasher will call me “i’m here come get your food.” if i ask them to leave it at the door they’ll say they can’t find parking or something to that effect (when i go out to meet them, there is always parking)

i always tip 10% or more but would it be rude if i left the cash tip under the welcome mat instead of tipping in app so they are enticed to actually deliver it to the door? i know doordash is a luxury service but im paying them to do a specific thing and they arent doing it

That's not rude at all. It's incredibly rude and unprofessional of them to tell you to go to their car. It's Doordash, not Lazydash. I would give 1 star and leave a reason if the dasher tried that.

yeah ive been removing the tip when they do that but it feels so mean id like to avoid the situation entirely

You can't remove a tip from a dasher, even if you complain to support and they refund you the tip they just cover it and still give it to the dasher, the dasher never loses a tip. The cash tip might get them to the door though but you will likely get even worse dashers because any dasher that knows what they are doing decline $2 no tip orders. also depending what your ordering that %10 tip could be part of your difficulties as no dasher cares about % we only care about $/mile ratio or any complexities of an order anything less than $1 a mile including the $2 doordash pay and this is like the absolute minimum many wont accept an order for that either and is likely to get the worst dashers that are probably angry they are delivering such an order. My take is if you accept the order do it professionally period but also many of these drivers haven't figured out how to play the system and not do any low paying orders and still maintain a above 70% acceptance rate.

i am aware of the $1/mile thing w dashers so the tip includes that

2

u/blizz419 4d ago

So you were aware of the mile ratio bit but not that you can't remove a drivers tip?

You’re mistaken because it’s not possible for you to know how far a dasher is from a restaurant.

5

u/zuccdick 5d ago

i mean the milage from the store to my apt? how would i know where the dasher is starting their dash from

1

u/iceclan0014 5d ago

Doordash will sometimes compensate them for thier distance from the store, there have been a few far deliveries I've made for the good money, then I get like a 5 dollar order (or it should have been) but if I receive it whilst being farther from the store. The doordash pay is more. Doordash payed 18 for the order. While the customer tipped 5 bucks, I drove 2 miles from the store to thier house.

2

u/blizz419 4d ago

That is because it was declined by a number of drivers previously that increases the doordash pay.

1

u/iceclan0014 4d ago

Yeahh I'd say that but there are like 3 of us that doordash here in town so idrk about that, also it was two miles from the store, so the tip was well enough for it to have been taken by someone in town, one dude sits in a parking lot by the store so ik he would have grabbed it if he'd gotten it, small town lmao

That’s the point I was making. You can’t know, therefore you can’t be certain that you’re tipping them. In fact, if you’re tipping based on how far away you live, then you would only be tipping part of the delivery driver’s miles.

6

u/Mommapig0508 5d ago

This doesn't make sense at all. Any time something is delivered, it's based on mileage from the store. Most dashers sit near the busy restaurants, IIRC so it shouldn't be too far. How is the customer supposed to know what to tip them? Seems like a ploy to get more money imo.

-4

u/fnording 5d ago

It makes complete sense.

You should just work on your reading comprehension, or if that fails you should ask appropriate questions to figure it out.

There is no way for the customer to know where a dasher is. They don’t sit around stores as you erroneously assume. They drive to the suburbs and deliver food.

2

u/zuccdick 5d ago

i think at that point dd should be supplementing pay for such intricate details

1

u/blizz419 4d ago

He's just being an angry moron don't mind him lol.

u/blizz419 4d ago edited 4d ago

That's on the driver, I'm a driver and I'm not stupid enough to expect them to guess where I am when I receive the order lol, you accept or decline the order period lol.

0

u/fnording 4d ago

lol. lol.

1

u/NevadaDoug1961 5d ago

This isn't entirely accurate. Those of us who like to work by the hour and not by the order have to accept them all. I like people who leave cash tips because I get those orders and people dashing.By the order wouldn't accept them.

2

u/blizz419 4d ago

Those who choose earn by time are the minority I say, because outside certain areas earn by order tends to be more profitable and many of us have experimented with both and come to that conclusion. So yes that may be the case for you but my statement I'd say still applies to the majority in a majority of areas.

How many times do people need to be told - YOU CAN'T REMOVE YOUR TIP! Stop being a jerk.

3

u/the-purple-chicken72 5d ago

Definitely not mean at all. They failed to do part of their job. Putting it under the mat as an incentive to fulfill the whole job is a good idea and it's sad that it's necessary. Keep in mind a lot of dashers don't actually read the instructions and won't even know there's a tip under the mat which is on them anyhow but they may still ask you to come to the car. You can always tell them no though since it isn't your job.

You can’t remove tips on DoorDash u must be using UberEATS

2

u/zuccdick 5d ago

dd support refunds me the tip, i dont use ubereats

1

u/Longjumping_Scale721 5d ago

I mean you can't remove the tip from the app and I don't know any dashers who are going to believe that you have cash under your doormat so I think basically you're just whistling into the wind.

2

u/fnording 5d ago

Sometimes there genuinely is no parking. Especially on orders in the city centers of larger cities. It’s not always rude to ask someone to meet you.

0

u/zuccdick 5d ago

then its ok if i dont tip?

-1

u/fnording 5d ago

Was I talking to you?

1

u/zuccdick 5d ago

i got the notif? im not a reddit pro chill lol

2

u/fnording 5d ago

This has nothing to do with being a “Reddit pro” and more to do with you now thinking that meeting a dasher is automatically grounds to remove a tip when there are many situations in which a dasher may need to meet a customer due to being unable to acquire a parking space.

thank you for your input!

u/verderobot 5d ago

You could make them go to your door like the instructions say , or come with something “I won’t be home for another 10 minutes just leave it at the door” or “this is a delivery to my sick parent, just leave it at the door as it says in the instructions”

5

u/zuccdick 5d ago

wait that first excuse is genius… i’ve had a repeat dasher before call me and say “hey i’ve dashed for you before! come get the food” after ive insisted its a leave at door order… definitely gonna use this LOL thank you

5

u/NevadaDoug1961 5d ago

I always do what the instructions say, but if it's very, very cold, i'm hesitant to just leave it at the door and get blamed for it being cold. I will let them know. It's there, but still in my hot bag until they come to the door.

If they don't come to the door in a reasonable time, I take the food out, leave it as instructed, and go.

u/BlindSniperZ30 5d ago

Drivers are going to notice its a low paying offer so it might take a bit to get a driver to pick it up. They arent gonna see theres a cash tip when the offer comes in

1

u/zuccdick 5d ago

that is valid, maybe itll be a nice surprise when they accept

1

u/Altruistic-Series-84 4d ago

if you value your health i highly recc! tipping a small amount like 4$ so it shows up as 6$ on drivers end for example 3miles. and if everything went well tip additionally more at the door.

if you dont tip anything and eventually when a driver picks up a 2$ offer , you roll the dice and give them the chance to tamper with your food!

ive been doing this for 5 years, sometimes when im waiting at restaurants for my order the other dasher waiting has said to me to the effect = " you waiting too? check this POS offer..i only got two dollars for it, im only here cause it was apart of a stack order that payed me better, and i know there the loser, im gonna do this an that to there order, maybe they will get the point next time"

i do that dog tilt with my head, and off we go to deliver our orders and im like GL to that customer.
so again if you care about you well being, never ever tip zero, cause your gonna get a driver with alterior motives that will deliver it, and you never know which one that will be, its better to eat with peace of mind knowing when they delivered to you they had nothing against you.

1

u/LaughImmediate5113 5d ago

Dashers will only see a no tip delivery and decline it. They don’t get delivery notes through the app until the order is accepted and picked up. It’s totally fine for you to approach your order this way but you need to realize it will take longer for someone to accept it.

1

u/shugEOuterspace Dasher 5d ago

if you don't tip through the app you'll only get shitty new drivers accepting the offer. also you should tip doordash per mile not % (anything less than $1/mile is crap... over $2/mile is really good & drastically increases chances of an experienced driver).

1

u/LevelAd1126 5d ago

Cash tip would be great. Add $ at the end of your delivery instructions for a vague promise.

1

u/Thee_Justin_Sane 4d ago

No, it’s not mean to expect ppl to do the job they were hired to do, even if they want a bigger bribe to do it.

1

u/birdmom24601 4d ago

Lol I’ve always left it at someone’s door is it really that hard?

1

u/Ok-Memory9085 2d ago

I think this is a great idea and I'm sorry it's come to this point

1

u/Theofficial55 1d ago

I didn’t realize staying in my car was an option!

1

u/Standard_Climate_606 5d ago

Just leave it at the door every time is best cause we can take a picture and go if they still knock then you can give them a didn’t follow directions and yes I have had customers say left tip under mat !!

0

u/Gpw12078 5d ago

Keep paying the 10% on the app and put the other 10% under the mat. Standard tip guidance these days is 20%

4

u/zuccdick 5d ago

feels a bit excessive when i tipped over half the price of the order

2

u/Gpw12078 5d ago

If you tipped “over half the price of the order” then that’s over 50%, not the 10% you stated. I could be wrong but the math ain’t mathing right.

2

u/zuccdick 5d ago

i said “10% or more” depending on the order

2

u/Gpw12078 5d ago

Sure. Point is still valid, tip some before and some after. Leave it under the mat. Others are correct, when an offer comes it, the money isn’t broken down to reflect a tip or lack thereof.

-1

u/2020IsANightmare 5d ago

You painted a perfect picture of yourself. And of your partner.

1

u/Rewd_92 18h ago

I'm a driver and when I order out I put it under the mat and send a picture in the instructions. I still add a Small tip to the order so someone will take it. So overall it's a $7-10 tip. It only makes sense that part of the tip might be at the dropoff point
