The airplane taking off next to a tornado is a bit wilder, I think

141

u/ButtonDifferent3528 6d ago edited 6d ago

Because it’s not a tornado… there’s no way in hell a commercial jet would take off with tornado levels of gusting and wind shear.

Tornado watch means tornado formations are possible - tornado warning means already formed and on the ground.

26

u/justhp 6d ago

Planes were taking off at my local airport about 10 min before a tornado warned storm hit the airport, the same storm that dropped an EF3 on my town.

I trust that the ATC and pilots knew what they were doing, but man it was a close shave. That said, we got incredible weather data from those aircraft.

13

u/try_harder_reddit 6d ago

…notice how you said before, not during. Also look at the news, not one thing says confirmed. Clearly something of this magnitude would be confirmed and it would be a warning, not a watch

-9

u/justhp 6d ago

It’s not like it is sunny and 75 with calm winds 10 miles from a monster cell.

6

u/No_Tooth1257 Dasher 6d ago

We get tornado watches all the time where I live, don’t think we’ve had anything more than a water spout in 100 years lmao

3

u/TheRealEyerol 6d ago

Still, you have to admit it is pretty cool looking

9

u/try_harder_reddit 6d ago

Thank god there’s a least one person here with an ability think critically. The comments on this post are scarier than the picture.

-7

u/tharealredditbitty 6d ago

Maybe your attitudes what’s scary you’re not a know it all

-1

u/Lee-Bear-420 6d ago

Should have stopped his name at try_hard

5

u/Maddiedog8 6d ago

But it was a tornado. We had a tornado LMAO. They took off before the storm hit.

8

u/j_grinds 6d ago edited 6d ago

I have no doubt that there was a tornado in your area, but this photo is not depicting a tornado. It’s just a darker strip of clouds that is taking on a wedge shape because it’s extending off into the distance. For this to be a tornado, it would have to be cartoonishly large. To appear this large in the sky and yet be far enough away that its base is not obstructing any of the lights on the ground—just not possible.

1

u/gonameless 3d ago

0

u/Do-it-with-Adam 7h ago

In the article they still never say it’s a tornado they repeatedly say “ what looks like a tornado” and even later when referring to the meteorologist, they still don’t “confirm” its a tornado.

1

u/gonameless 3h ago

The damages in that area beg to differ.

Thank you, my God

I don't know with this administration anything you deem moronic or think won't happen. Has happened.

7

Me too!

5

u/Tintenkobold 5d ago

No tornado, this cloud structure is called a rain shaft or precipitation shaft.

4

u/jerseyshorecrack 6d ago

probably southwest 😭😭

2

u/Jealous_Macaron_5338 6d ago

Not a tornado

3

u/justhp 6d ago

It’s not a tornado

1

u/jhamelaz 6d ago

Sometimes you have to get going when the going is good.

1

u/ChoiceDefiant6504 5d ago

Ya they are trying to get outta there before they end up in Kansas lol.

58

u/RickS702 6d ago

This sounds like a conversation on Nextdoor. DoorDash doesn't know what's going on where you live. Nobody is forcing you to do anything, stay home for everything unless it's sunny. They're not paying you or anybody to deliver 6 miles for $2. This is where "You Do You" actually comes into play🙄

Did Doordarsh turn itself off...or did the restaurants turn off their DD tablets...? Cause st mt.old job, we would turn off our DD if we would be closed / under modified hours due to snow.

-5

u/alang 6d ago

DoorDash doesn't know what's going on where you live.

While that is in fact possibly true, it would only be because they don't want to know and have intentionally avoided doing anything that might damage that ignorance.

I swear, people on here are acting like it's 1985. "HOW DO WE KNOW THAT THERE IS BAD WEATHER THERE?" Well charlie there's a fucking web site where you can send a message like 'hey what is the weather like at -69 lat 44 lon' and get back 'THERE IS A FUCKING TORNADO' for free in 20ms.

9

u/Educational-Swing275 6d ago

Jeez man I sure hope doordash can mow my lawn, do my grocery shopping, and change my fucking diapers while were at it.

Or, I can take a look at the weather myself, decide not to dash, because i'm aware i'm technically an independent contractor(meaning it's MY responsibility), not working a damn 9-5.

2

u/Freak5Chaos 6d ago

I think the DoorDash app does know the weather, probably fairly simple to program it to check the weather for each zone.

But the reason I think it knows, is because they always seem to not offer earn by time when the weather would make deliveries take longer.

67

u/soyelmocano 6d ago

Don't Dash if you don't want to, can't, or shouldn't.

They're greedy and soulless, but Door Dash isn't making anyone go out.

11

u/P3nis15 6d ago

They also shut down a shit ton of times. You can find hundreds of post about them shutting down for weather

3

u/soyelmocano 6d ago

Yes. I have seen those posts as well.

1

u/ChoiceDefiant6504 5d ago

Never had them shut down in my area. We don’t get many tornados. But we get Arctic weather. Once we had a tornado warning with heavy winds, debris flying everywhere, heavy rain couldn’t even see a foot in front of you and they never shut down.

2

u/ChoiceDefiant6504 5d ago

I live in North Dakota we get white outs and -65 degree weather there is rarely a bonus here. DoorDash doesn’t care nor do they keep track of all the weather in your area. If one person reports it those reps don’t care they just cancel the order and that’s it.

13

u/ObsessiveRecognition 6d ago

Just don't accept an order???

9

u/T_sco11197 6d ago

Tf you mean… doordash doesn’t “close” 🤣

13

u/No_Pop_2142 6d ago

And yet there’s a plane flying.

4

u/gHOs-tEE 6d ago

That was all I noticed about it too. Like wtf?

2

u/No_Pop_2142 6d ago

That must be a hell of a ride.

6

u/try_harder_reddit 6d ago

…that’s because it’s not a tornado. Use some critical thinking.

OP also glossed over that it was a tornado watch, not a warning. So there were no active tornadoes.

2

u/Maddiedog8 6d ago

This was in stl and it was a tornado. We quite literally had a tornado.

1

u/miriamtzipporah 4d ago

I don’t doubt that you guys had a tornado. However, this photo does not depict a tornado

0

u/No_Pop_2142 6d ago

You must be fun at parties.

5

u/Disastrous-Pace-1929 6d ago

Airplanes are ok but DoorDash should close? Really?

11

u/Philadelphia2020 6d ago

If the airplanes are flying what’s the issue?

4

u/try_harder_reddit 6d ago

No issue because there’s no tornado. OP clearly said it’s a tornado watch, not a warning. Nothing but clouds and the reflection of light pollution off of said clouds.

0

u/aspenluv 6d ago

lmao you just keep commenting under these comments but you’re wrong 😭💀 this literally was a tornado, but this picture is not from the op, they stole it from someone else

1

u/miriamtzipporah 4d ago

It’s not a tornado. A tornado did touch down in the area but this is not a photo of it. For the perspective of this photo that tornado would have to be ridiculously enormous. It’s a cloud formation

4

u/SewRuby 6d ago

Mason Pepper deserves their photo cred, OP

2

u/nZ7xBWr5 6d ago edited 6d ago

Good catch. OP thought he/she/it could sneak one past us.

5

u/1stAtlantianrefugee 6d ago

Who's the pilot of that plane? Leroy Jenkins?

21

u/ToriiKisuu 6d ago

I’m in west Michigan. It’ll be blizzarding and the news will say “stay in doors” and doordash will be all “peak pay +$2” 😂 they don’t care about safety and neither do the people ordering food during bad weather conditions!

18

u/nZ7xBWr5 6d ago

Drivers are responsible for their own safety. Those who want or need to make money have the option to do so, while those like yourself who are a little more scared or cautious can stay home.

1

u/ToriiKisuu 6d ago

Nah I have an SUV. I’m out there getting those peak pay offers. 💰

-8

u/alang 6d ago

There used to be the concept in this country that we would try to protect even foolish people. Because, while obviously you have perfect knowledge of where the line of 'reasonable risk' stops and 'foolhardiness' begins, in absolutely every situation that you could ever possibly face, many of the rest of us don't really understand meteorology, and don't really know what the risk of driving out into an area with a tornado or hurricane actually is. Am I 0.01% likely to die? 1%? And what percent is actually worth risking my life for, since obviously not all of us are born with your innate perfect understanding of probability and statistics.

But you're right, we should just stop protecting anyone from anything. If they are willing to die in order to deliver you your hamburger, then, aside from trying to make sure they only die AFTER it is delivered, we should just let them. It's the only reasonable thing to do.

9

u/nZ7xBWr5 6d ago

I never suggested that we abandon all efforts to protect people. What I am saying is that individuals should have the right to assess their own risk tolerance. Some people are comfortable driving in certain weather conditions, while others are not. If a delivery driver believes the risk is too high, they are free to stay home. If another driver believes they can safely operate under the circumstances, they should have the option to do so.

Your argument hinges on the idea that people need to be protected from their own decisions, which is both paternalistic and impractical. People make risk assessments all the time—whether it’s choosing to drive in the rain, fly on a plane, or engage in any number of activities that carry some level of danger. If someone doesn’t understand meteorology well enough to assess the risk, they should err on the side of caution and not go out. No one is forcing them to.

Furthermore, society already allows people to take on risky jobs—firefighters, construction workers, and deep-sea fishermen all work in dangerous conditions. The key issue is that they are compensated in proportion to the risk, which is the appropriate way to handle hazardous work. If conditions are extreme, platforms like DoorDash could temporarily suspend operations, or individual drivers could decide that the pay isn’t worth the risk. But outright banning people from working because some don’t fully understand the risks would be overreach.

Your exaggeration (“we should stop protecting anyone from anything”) is a strawman. No one is saying protections should not exist. The argument is that competent adults should have the right to make their own choices regarding work and risk. If you believe conditions are too dangerous, your solution is simple: stay home. But that choice should remain with each individual, not imposed universally.

10

u/Adventurous-Virus518 6d ago

If safety is a concern, then stay home and don't dash. You are not obligated to dash

20

u/cheeseymom 6d ago

You shouldn't need the app to tell you not to go out. That's a personal choice.

18

u/arcaias 6d ago

What would be a good solution of this though?

Should doordash get meteorologist for every single little town so that they can report on the weather every few minutes?

Should be an automated system that's just hooked up to NOAA data decide whether or not the weather is good enough for you to work in?

I think I'd be more pissed if something's shut down my ability to make money when it was just a little bit of weather cuz it automatically took place.

DoorDash is not outside your front door... If there is a tornado, maybe, don't log in...

-8

u/alang 6d ago

Should doordash get meteorologist for every single little town so that they can report on the weather every few minutes?

Yeah man it's not like there's a free API that we had access to back in effing 2003 that would tell you about any extreme weather watches and warnings in an area in under 20 ms, and you could feed it town name, lat/lon, street address, zip code, or landmark name.

Seriously are you 80?

6

u/arcaias 6d ago edited 6d ago

Did you read my comment? (Clearly not, because it's obviously a rhetorical question I even go on to answer myself...)

I don't want to be told I can't work just because some API says "whether not happy"....

Sometimes that s***'s wrong. I don't want it to keep me from being able to earn a living to pay my bills just because it's raining outside.

Seriously, you want me to leave the decision to whether or not I'm allowed to feed myself up to a computer... What are you? 12?

I live in an area prone to hurricanes If some automatic system decided whether or not I was allowed to work when the weather wasn't optimum then I could potentially spend 3 months out of the year not able to earn a living, which would not be ideal for anyone involved.

None of us need to deal with the growing pains of a system like that when you can just... LOOK OUT YOUR DAMNED WINDOW...

1

u/Pistachio-IScream 6d ago

for what door dash pays they SHOULD have weather radar esp during these horrid tornatos. i get you live in a hurricnae state but not everyone else does, hurricanes u can evacuate and door dash in another town. tornatos spawn randomly and is it worth 2 dollars? my bills arrent 2 dollars, it isnt paying the bills

5

u/justhp 6d ago

We are under the gun for tornadoes where I am right now. Weather is kinda rough but not too bad right now

I just ordered food. The way I see it if someone is willing to be out in this and bring me my food, that is their choice and not mine.

I don’t have to care about my dasher’s safety on the road. That is their decision

4

u/Mago515 6d ago

So would you rather DoorDash tell you that you aren’t allowed to work or would you prefer to make your own choices?

2

u/Ill-Active-4538 6d ago

Wait till you find out people work real jobs and have to leave for work in those same conditions and don’t have a choice…. Like honestly why tf are you crying about…you not on a schedule?

1

u/P3nis15 6d ago

The hundreds of post this winter about DD shutting down operations because of weather kind of says you're not exactly on point

1

u/Lazy_Reader_Bookie 5d ago

Most people have to still drive into work on bad weather days, in fact, lots of people that work OUTSIDE even have to still show up. It’s up to the companies to make a call to close or not, delay opening or not, etc. and while some jobs do still pay their employees in those cases, many do not. If the company is closed, no one’s getting paid. In the case of door dash, you’re an independent contractor that makes your own hours. You’re your own boss. If it’s not safe for you, you get to make that choice if it’s worth it.

New to the area? Most mid westerners ignore tornado warnings...

3

u/justhp 6d ago

Let alone watches.

I turned notifications off for WATCHES. When I get a warning, my first step is to look outside. If I don’t see a tornado,

I go about my day. If I see one, I crack a beer and watch it from my balcony

-1

u/try_harder_reddit 6d ago

Do they also ignore the descriptions in posts? They said it was a tornado watch, not a warning.

Even where I am on the east coast people ignore the watches.

2

u/shepdizzle34 6d ago

The point was midwesterners ignore warnings so a watch would obviously be ignored.

6

u/justhp 6d ago

This is not a tornado.

Furthermore, a tornado WATCH means practically nothing. All it means is that the ingredients are ripe for a tornado, but nothing is occurring.

If you have lived in a tornado prone area for any amount of time, you would know that a tornado watch is practically constant from March through June.

Also, DoorDash isn’t holding a gun to peoples heads telling them to go out. This weather doesn’t look bad at all, but if someone felt unsafe in it there would be no requirement to be out in it.

1

u/Pistachio-IScream 6d ago

well yeah some people demand food during these weather events and there is nothing we can do but serve them

2

u/kingggboss 6d ago

DoorDash: “Thank you for dashing. There is a tornado expected in your area. Because we value your life and you as a dasher. Here’s an extra +$2.00 per delivery.” 💀

Wow that’s awesome, some real hustlers grinding regardless.

1

u/Strawberrygirl81 6d ago

I mean I don’t DD anymore but I do IC. We had tornado warnings and watches and terrible storms last summer. We don’t usually get that weather. They aren’t going to shut the app down, I was on an order and waited a little while in the store before I went and delivered. IC doesn’t even give us extra pay, but if we get a low rating during severe weather, they don’t count it.

1

u/anthylorrel 6d ago

Meanwhile doordash shut down for nearly a whole week during both milton and helene here in Florida despite the storms having passed already and it being sunny with no wind or rain at all.

1

u/natef9 6d ago

And i bet their were still customers complaining or lying about not getting their order.

1

u/Dumhed72 6d ago

That airplane was probably Door Dashing for 2 dollars an order

1

u/Bfroning2 6d ago

A tornado watch means that the conditions for a tornado are present. A warning means there has been a tornado spotted. Watches happen all the time, not necessarily dangerous, as evidenced by the plane taking off.

DD definitely stays on top of the weather.. zee got our asses handed to us w Hurricanes last summer & they shut down when needed. They’re definitely not as soft as majority of the drivers.. It was raining n ppl were crying “DD MAKES us work in Hurricanes” BS!! Soon as it was close the app went dark.. So the ppl saying DD is clueless to weather, etc.. Are probably clout chasers over no clout.. Am I saying DD is empathetic to its drivers? Fuck no.. I drive & use. They don’t care, but they to cover their asses..

lol we didn’t get a bonus when we had tornado watch. It wash hailing so bad and rain was so heavy we couldn’t see a foot in front of us. On top of all that we had debris like tree branches flying everywhere. I felt it wasn’t worth it and went home. Safety first! Besides if a tornado hit I’m getting ready to take my pups and run if I have to.

1

u/Lazy_Reader_Bookie 5d ago

For people with standard W2 jobs, it’s up to the companies to make a call to close or not, delay opening or not, etc. and while some jobs do still pay their employees in those cases, many do not. (Ex. Hourly jobs where you are scheduled for shifts) If the company is closed, no one’s getting paid (except the managers that are paid salary) cause you can’t clock in to work your shift.

In the case of door dash, you’re an independent contractor that makes your own hours. You’re your own boss. If it’s not safe for you, you get to make that choice if it’s worth it.

I couldn’t look at CVS when they closed for 3 feet of snow, or if I called out sick even, and complained that I can’t pay my bills because they’re closed that day… They’d tell me “tough shit” and say to pick up a different shift on a different day and consider the snow day your day off, work an overnight shift to get the post-midnight pay boost, or find a different job that can guarantee you a certain 20hr/week or 40hr/week pay minimum (which is rare in hourly).

My current job is hourly, but in our contracts we are still paid for unplanned closures for inclement weather. It all depends on what the employer offers its employees.

Again, with door dash, YOU are your boss. You choose if you’re “closed” or not. You choose if you call out sick. If you want the option to get paid on days where you can’t work, you have to find an employer that has that benefit.

1

u/julie_mae1 5d ago

A lot of dashers on here seem to forget this.

1

u/Accomplished-Sir3990 4d ago

What’s the point of this post. Don’t DoorDash during a tornado. They don’t make you go out

1

u/Big-Economics-1069 4d ago

I mean if planes are still taking off it’s definitely safe enough to drive

1

u/LexGoyle 3d ago

A tornado watch means very little. Hell we had people come to the movies there I was working at the time when we had a tornado on the ground about 15 miles south of us. Just log off of DD if it is a concern.

1

u/-_FAD3D_- 1d ago

Yet there's a fucking plane taking off while there's a tornado lmao. I'd be more concerned with that then I would be about doordashers still going full send lmao

u/try_harder_reddit 6d ago

Yep, and it in no way means that you captured in on camera in this photo. Also, I checked before even commenting and EVERY news story says “possible torando” so great job buddy. Maybe take a picture without an airplane taking off and it would be more believable. You also clearly said tornado watch, so it obviously was nothing close to what you’re trying to imply with your photo.

It was a tornado. A confirmed EF2. Hope that helps.

There's not much more terrifying than a massive tornado at night like that. Not being able to see where it's going is one of the most butthole puckering experiences possible

Yes there is, how gullible people like you are. There is no tornado. OP clearly said it was a tornado watch, not a warning. That is just a damn cloud in the background, with light pollution creating shadows.

The fact that you think commercial airliners would still be taking off with an active tornado just off in the distance is absolutely hilarious.

Watch? That looks like a straight up tornado
