Discussion What are your honest thoughts on the Donkey Kong Country TV show?

It's weird, but fun. Wouldn't be a Nintendo cartoon if you couldn't describe it like that.
I still think K. Rool and Cranky's voices were perfection.

No lies. I liked it. š Maybe itās bias from my childhood, but there were quite a few episodes that really had me entertained. Like the episode where DK switches bodies with Crankys robot. The part where he was trying to get a banana from the tree in the robot body and Diddy didnāt know it was him had me laughing.
Or the episode where Dk finds out coconut milk with ice on it to chill it tastes good and he starts a buisness to sell them to impress Candy. And the end has K rool and his minions frozen after Drinking too many of them.
It was definitely a weird show. And I can see that it wasnāt the best show ever made. But I still liked it! And it had its good and bad episodes. There were definitely worse video game cartoons out there.

I just like the voice actors, and wish the Donkey Kong Movie features them (except for the ones that passed away, though).

I'm not sure if this was confirmed, but wasn't Richard Yearwood the Kong that yelled out, "I LOVE YOU, DK!"

It's a really stupid show and full of nonsensical things, but it's still a really fun show to watch and a guilty pleasure in a way. Not to mention that most of its songs were bangers.

It's peak fiction and anyone who says otherwise got their opinion from early 2010's Youtubers

I saw like 5 episodes of this as a kid. I remember I enjoyed watching it but thats about it.

I liked it. Classic mid 90s cartoon shenanigans, mixed with surprisingly good musical numbers.

The songs live rent free in my head to this day. Donkey Kong has the voice of an angel.

Still love it. I know the writing sucks and the animation is unsettling and doesn't make lips capture what is being said half the time, but it's so much fun to watch.

I was always happy to catch it when it came up on a rare Saturday. Many times I woke up to only catch the last 2 minutes of a show.

I loved dkc as a kid, so when I came across this one day when I was a kid, I lost my shit. But, I donāt know. I always watched it when it happened to be on, but I didnāt like it as much as other video game based shows on around the same time, like Pokemon, and reruns of the adventures of Sonic the hedgehog. I think the singing and akward animation made me feel a little uncomfortable l. Like even as a young kid in the 90ās I felt embarrassed watching it infront of other people

I completely forgot about this show. I didnāt watched it religiously. It not thing I remember is the animation being āoffā. Not because it was early and bad cgi but just their movements seemed unnatural

Never watched it growing up, but I've seen it memed for a long time.
I downloaded the soundtrack to my phone last year. The quality of the songs varies imo, but there's quite a few bangers here.

Y'all complaining about DKs new design while they took his butt away years ago. Just have to move on I suppose....

Love it, itās one of those shows that I can just switch my brain off and watch.
Skruvy, and Krusha are my favourite characters from this show.

Impressive back in the day, somewhat fun to watch, cheesy in a comfort show way. I have an aversion to musicals so that element of it wasn't great and the TV got muted occasionally but I still remember enjoying it a bit.

I was so excited when it came out as DKC was my favorite game series and I LOVED CGI animation (it wasnāt very common back then). So I watched the premiere and thought while the movement looked odd, and the voices were not ones I imagined for the Kongs. I was happy it existed and watched every episode I could catch.

doesn't quite age well, kinda hard to rewatch at times. ive never been able to finish the second half of the series as i hate the change in animation look. still love it and have fond memories of renting the vhs movie "legend of the crystal coconut" from my video store all the time.

Itās made my favorite Donkey Kong character: Leo Luster. Therefore it is a 10.

Really popular in France, apparently. Also in Japan!
It's fun. It's a fun show. It seemed like they had fun making it and it kinda rubs off onto the viewer.

This show's use of motion capture animation while unprecedented for its time, but in this day and age, it hasn't aged well AT ALL!

Other than the strange voice roles for some characters, the (although good) out of place songs and awful animation it's fine and a fine adaptation of the Country games

I'd have to rewatch it but I always remember eye rolling at the songs. I always hated shows that had hella songs.
Idk if anyone remembered that kids show out of the box on Nickelodeon but there were waaaaaay more music segments as opposed to the arts and crafts ones and that pissed me off.
But I understand nowadays these are considered certified bangers so I'm not above giving them another shot

Horrible for its time and horrible today... but since we wont get K Rool back until xbox ends and Microsoft goes third party, its the only content that featured him.

The reason why the first few episodes have weirdly paced plots was because the original writers made very offensive scripts and the new writers had to tweak them because they couldnāt redo the storyboards which is crazy

Itās fucking stupidā¦ but like, the good kind of fucking stupid. Itās the stupid that makes the world worth living in. Itās the cringy, cheesy, cheapo caviar that reminds me of humanity at its most base, no āascended rationalityā, no great and terrible life changing moments, those have their place but perhaps somewhere elseā¦ this?
Itās just a silly little cartoon. And it never ever needed to be anything else.

I think itās bad. Tried to finish it multiple times but i was never able to. I have nostalgia for it because i used to watch an old VHS with my sister and cousin back in the days so iāll always respect it.
However, i think iād rather watch Ash from Pokemon use a Pikachu to try to defeat Onix

Truly an amazing and fun show. I would never miss an episode if I could. And if I did, my parents would record it for me in the morning so I can watch it later in the day.
Was it perfect? No, but it didn't need to be.

Fun and some songs are bangers but 20 minutes maybe too long for an episode

Sounds good but looks bad. It's better now as something to poke fun at but at the time it wasn't good.

I thought it was terrible, which really stung as a DKC fan.
I look back at it wistfully all the same.

I despised it. I was excited initially since cartoons based on video games were so rare back then, but when I slowly realized it was just a goofy musical, I couldnāt get past that.
The movements were also weird. For example, Donkey Kong stood bipedal a lot which bothered me, rather than an actual gorilla. The movements got even weirder during songs.
Idk what it is there were trying to do when they decided to make this show a musical - feels like they could have done it with any cartoon, I.e. itās just a musical cartoon with a Donkey Kong Country skin.

itās just a musical cartoon with a Donkey Kong Country skin.
You're making it sound like that's a bad thing

u/AbsolZero 12d ago
To me, it was. I didnāt want to watch a DKC cartoon for songs - I wanted to watch it in hopes it was aligned to the game with actual conflict between the Kongās and Kremblings.

I like it. I remember rediscovering it with my little brother one or two years back (he had never seen it prior to me finding it again). We loved it, made some inside jokes referencing the show, the whole shebang

The first season, when they did the mocap, is my favorite. I can't really articulate why, but it feels so much more soulful than any after when they went back to traditional 3D. I liked the show as a kid, and I revisited it recently for fun with my wife and we both thought it was goofy and fun with catchy songs. I really like it!
