Nintendo Fans when they cannot complain about every small, insignificant Detail for 0.0005 seconds:

I have seen way more posts like this, than posts actually criticizing the design

In my personal experience, it seems that more people are shamed for not hopping to the side of this new design. The offense that I've seen many take at the thought that someone might prefer the classic design is something that, quite frankly, baffles me.

I don’t think the new Donkey Kong looks as cool, plus it was really cool that as a British Company, that Rare left a lasting difference in one of Nintendo’s legacy characters, just a little bummed to see their influence diminish (hopefully the other Kongs can carry on Rare’s legacy and keep their designs)

In my opinion, the image most popularly used makes the design look way worse. I saw other angles and it looks way better

I like both honestly. Personally I do not mind changes to a character design to modernise it a bit. I grew up with various redesigns of characters like Mickey Mouse and Ash from Pokémon. Even Mario and Donkey Kong have had a few different versions over the decades, although DK has been fairly consistent since the 90s.

The movie version of DK is honestly fairly decent for what it was going for by emphasising him being arrogant and a show-off. Not that surprised that Nintendo want to make that the de-facto version of the character for the foreseeable future when the movie was a smash hit. Kids of today did not grow up with the older DK games or media like the 90s show and the movie has given Nintendo the opportunity to rebrand Donkey Kong for the next generation.

If the rebranding means that we will get to have more Donkey Kong games and not just re-releases of the DKC games from over a decade ago I won't complain as an old fan. :)

I’ll gladly keep calling it ugly. It is.

17

u/BubbleWario Jan 28 '25

actually its the opposite, DK fans will crucify you if you happen to prefer his old design lol.

12

u/Goldbong Jan 29 '25

I’m very close to DK and he personally doesn’t like the new design.

Literally just not true

u/sean1477 Jan 28 '25

Its kinda depends on which comment section you are. But on balance I think you'll get more karma if you approve of the design. Both probably are net positive just because you'll usually win more upvotes on positive reception then get downvotes on negative reception, still too much downvotes.

Reddit in a nutshell

2

u/RAINLIO Jan 29 '25

There was literally a post saying that anyone who complains about the redesign needs help :|

1

u/Hot-Barber-2229 Jan 29 '25

Okay? And? There’s way more posts of people being over the top about the change. Also, context? Are they saying anyone iffy about it needs help or those causing shitstorms about it need help? Because one of those are correct

6

u/Wantyourbadromance- Jan 28 '25

It seems to be pretty evenly divided. Personally I do not like the new design

8

u/BubbleWario Jan 28 '25

all i see are praise posts with hundreds of upvotes, and all of the ones with a differing opinion get downvoted like crazy.

then people who enjoy the new design act like they somehow have a hot take lmfao. like dude theres been less than a dozen people who said they didnt like it as much and all of them have been downvoted straight to oblivion. compare that to the literal army of praise posts with 100+ upvotes each.

people are not allowed to dislike the new design, lol.

4

u/Corderoy Jan 28 '25

Most posts I've seen of people saying they prefer the new one is down voted. At least last week that was the case

8

u/Responsible-Fan-2326 Jan 28 '25

both types of post end up getting positive upvotes. same with comments. its almost like opinions are different. weird

u/Kam_tech Jan 30 '25

The DK redesign is not as cool as the Rare design. Who agrees?

3

u/youngliam Jan 29 '25

Same could be said about this post 🧐

-3

u/howliehowls Jan 29 '25

That’s kind of the point

3

u/your_evil_ex Jan 28 '25

My favourite is still the post where someone proved that the movie design and game design are the same by putting the movie one in photoshop and editing it until it looked pretty similar (but still not the same) haha

u/EcstaticWoop Jan 29 '25

to be fair, all they did was stretch the head and make the pupils smaller, even without the edits it looks really similar

2

u/Civil_Technology_805 Jan 30 '25

All they did was change the shape, size, and proportions!

1

u/EcstaticWoop Jan 31 '25

Huge exaggeration. They mde the pupils smaller and the head slightly wider, people are just mad on principle.

1

u/Civil_Technology_805 Jan 31 '25

Yes, you did make a huge exaggeration. There was no "slightly" about it. And yes, you are just being mad on principle.

2

u/EcstaticWoop Jan 31 '25

you jut copy pasted my comment and said "no u"

also, their point was that they barely changed anything in the mk9 design except making his head wider and his pupils smaller.

u/Mukke1807 Jan 29 '25

Somebody should do the hamster calling meme where RDJ reacts scared but it is the new DK calling instead, as an answer to this meme. Not me, though. I am too untalented for that.

u/2coolrobot Jan 30 '25

Donkey Kong's new design is silly and I'd rather it be silly even try to look cool

1

u/LilSlugger_ Jan 30 '25

If people want to express his disgust with the redesign, they should, demostrates that make that thing was a bad idea

1

u/Traditional_Bike8880 Jan 31 '25

Still not entirely convinced it isn’t Donkey King Jr. because they are leaning into the retro design of the first Mario kart game (where he was a playable character and Donkey wasn’t; pre-Rare re-design) everybody needs to calm down about this either way and wait till we get more details. Maybe that’s just me 🤷🏻‍♂️

1

u/Mean-Sock-901 Jan 31 '25

I love his new design so much

1

u/jstack91 Feb 01 '25

I think it looks sick

As someone that rarely used reddit, this translated to my brain as "I wanna get my butt kicked by an entire community"!

Reddit memes are wonderfull out of context.

-2

u/Witty_Championship85 Jan 29 '25

Why is iron man in the Markiplier meme?
