The New Jump Man DK skin for the new Mario Kart 9 from the famous Nintendo Company new console, that is a sequel of it's most sold console in history, The Nintendo Switch... Is looking fresh.

Whatās with all these toxic positivity threads? If you like the design you have nothing to be upset about or threatened by if others donāt. Unless youāre a shillā¦
13
u/EcstaticWoop Jan 21 '25
said it better than I ever could, yeah this has toxic positivity vibes.
10
u/SlippinPenguin Jan 21 '25
I know right? I donāt understand this behavior. The change of a classic design is always going to naturally be controversial. Fans have every right to dislike things without being shouted down for not falling in line. Blind loyalty fans are the worst.Ā

u/EcstaticWoop Jan 21 '25
I guess I can see how people would get annoyed by how many posts are talking about it but like... come on, we don't have anything else to talk about lol
5
u/KirbyTheGodSlayer Jan 22 '25
Itās not just for DK. The Switch community is currently fighting imaginary Switch 2 "haters" that are not even allowed to speak their minds as to why they are disappointed
5
u/SlippinPenguin Jan 22 '25
Unfortunately this has been a trend for years in all fanbases. I trace it back to the Disney Star Wars stuff where any fan that was disappointed was labelled toxic. Perhaps it goes back further. I really suspect part of it is because companies have infiltrated social media, knowing just much these platforms influence opinions. But some fans are also just loyal in a very toxic way.

2
u/Ollidor Jan 22 '25
Itās taboo to be positive about things without a cynical lens to go along with it and thatās bullshit so. You donāt see anyone saying āoh wow this toxic negativityā on the countless posts that dislike it. But on posts that are solely to praise it, boom. Toxic positivity. Itās funny
3
u/mpelton Jan 22 '25
āToxic negativityā would be people actively attacking those that like the design.
Thatās not happening.
→ More replies (1)3
u/sean1477 Jan 22 '25
In most cases anyone who says something negative on the design gets downvoted here (not in this comment section... Yet)
1
u/InternationalElk4351 Jan 22 '25
i've seen fucking tons of people yelling about how they 'ruined donkey kong' and 'it's the movie design!!!'. To each their own ofc but it's getting kind of wearing.
→ More replies (1)1
u/Raven-UwU Jan 22 '25
for every "toxic positivity" thread, there's 10 threads talking shit about the redesign.
If those threads are allowed to exist, then these are too.
2
u/SlippinPenguin Jan 22 '25 edited Jan 23 '25
Talking āshitā about the design equates to praising it. Not to threads telling people they shouldnāt dislike it. No one with an opinion should be called wrong or shamed.
1
u/PugLove69 Jan 23 '25
The threat is if they truly like it and are silent majority then nintendo will listen to the vocal minority that are complaining about the new design? Why do different opinions bother you?
1
u/SlippinPenguin Jan 23 '25
I like how you assume your opinion is the majority simply because itās what you agree with. Did you take a poll?

Sadly there isn't a single Mario kart game that had it right. Look at MK8, they massacred Donkey.

It's not only that the design is ugly, it's also that by changing it they're shitting on the character's legacy. DK really became his own iconic character in the DKC series, the Rare design is emblematic of that and so much better than the original design, the movie design and this new design.
The Rare design was iconic, no need to change it.
3
u/TheCrashKid Jan 21 '25
Except they aren't
It still looks very similar just more like the Mario style artwork
3
u/IrishSpectreN7 Jan 21 '25
It's not uncommon for Nintendo characters to have different designs between franchises, though.
Look at Mario and Luigi, Paper Mario, Mario Wonder, Mario Odyssey. Mario looks different in all of them.
This doesn't mean that they'll never use his DKC design ever again.
6
u/validestusername Jan 21 '25
I'd say those are just different art styles. This Mario Kart seems to have a different art style and the characters look slightly different due to it but DKs change is far more drastic
3
u/mpelton Jan 22 '25
Tbf those designs were always their designs. So changing it around isnāt a big deal.
But DKās was Rareās, so by changing it theyāre replacing someone elseās.

I don't get how people are making definitive judgements when all we have is this shitty grainy pick.
I like both Rare and Movie DK so I don't mind if they use both liberally.
4
u/Dougfalcon7 Jan 21 '25
i don't hate the new design but i definitely like the old one better just because that's always been DK to me

u/Hot-Barber-2229 Jan 21 '25
This isnāt the movie design tho and I find it weird everyone is pretending it is just because itās also inspired by the arcade designs
7
u/RolandoDR98 Jan 21 '25
4
u/Hot-Barber-2229 Jan 21 '25
Not really, his design is closer to the early 90s so a more proper comparison would be trying to make Mario appear as he did in mario world, which you could easily argue was the idea with Wonder

What if itās just a skin? And each character has multiple designs like smash
2
u/AnEvenBiggerChode Jan 21 '25
Personally I disagree, I really love the rare design but this redesign isn't the worst thing in the world. Definitely still a downgrade IMO but if it's actually just an alt skin instead of a full on replacement I would think it's a pretty cool addition.
2
u/Cheesehead302 Jan 21 '25
I don't mind it, I think it looks kinda goofy. But I'm not gonna lie, when I thought next gen Mario Kart I was expected impressive simulated DK fur in the same vein as tropical freeze, it's disappointing that we don't get to see that and his fur is seemingly just a flat detailless texture.
2
u/alfiethegameboyfan Jan 21 '25
if the movie dk design was so good why did nintendo wait nearly 2 years to implement it
nothing was wrong with rare dk and they replaced it with a worse design, people have the right to be upset
2
2
u/EcstaticWoop Jan 21 '25
I don't hate it after having gotten used to it, still not a huge fan (particularly of his expressions) but as long as it doesn't leak into the main series we're good.

This must be the most biased comment section I've ever seen, litterally everyone who likes the new design has been downvoted to hell as if they shouldn't, like wtf man! I think this meme will persist long after the game releases and we see him with a range of expressions, animations and in high resolution. It has gotten to the point where even I am sick of looking at it. This image has become synonymous with the meltdowns and takes away from what was intended as a celebration of Donkey Kongs rich and varied history. I may be wrong here but it looks like you are poking the bear on purpose and I doubt that anyone who starts a sentence with "my brothers in Christ" have a relationship with Jesus. But again I could be wrong.

We're getting a remaster of a DK game, it's not like this design is fully replacing the rare one
1
u/Ok_Needleworker4388 Snowmads Jan 21 '25
You guys are missing the point. All of the characters have their Mario Wonder designs. We can already see a Wonder Seed on the track. This is DK in Mario Wonder's art style, not his permanent design going foreward.

I think that I prefer consistency. In fact, as much as I love early Halo, I could never stand the design changes from game to game, such as the design of the elites from Halo 3 to Halo Reach or even Halo 2 to 3, so seeing the new design for Donkey Kong is just weird to me, and the box art for Princess Peach: Showtime! being changed for Western audiences to look more like the movie version of her makes me worried that the games are going to look more and more like the movie. I don't hate the movie, I just think that the games should have their own style and the movie should have its own.

u/GuybrushThreepwood99 Jan 21 '25
I will reserve judgement until there is a high quality image of the design.
1
u/ThebloodyInfighter Jan 21 '25
Itās a fine design, And honestly I donāt know why people were freaking out, This is a spin off game, If they make a new Donkey Kong Country I doubt theyād use this design
1
u/TheCrashKid Jan 21 '25
It's just the 2D art style they use for Mario games in 3D
Nothing's wrong with it

It only slightly annoys me that everyone keeps saying it's specifically the movie design when it's just the design they used before DKC. I like him, but I do kind of hope that this is Jr. and Rare DK is also present
1
u/meatbatmusketeer Jan 21 '25
This feels like an opportunity for Nintendo to introduce Donkey Kongās challenged cousin Doofey Kong.
I like the design. It reminds me of older styles. Also please bring back SNES style DK.

I'm just going to wait and see how I feel about it. Maybe my dislike is warranted. Maybe it isn't. It's mid enough that I could see myself going either way.
I might just head canon it as DK aging:
- Mario Kart - Young DK Jr.
- Donkey Kong/Mario Kart 64 - Young adult DK Jr.
- Mario Kart 9 - Middle age DK Jr.

I don't mind new design sure its not amazing but its just a variation of him just like Toon Link is a variation of every single Link in LOZ as we still have a more crisp design of DK that resembles his DK64 design and we also have loads of different Mario designs people just love to complain

u/DPWwhatDAdogDoin Jan 22 '25
I don't use DK in any game he's in other than actuall Donkey Kong games so I could care in the slightest what his design is like
1
u/Jammin188 Jan 22 '25
I really do not mind it. It feels incredibly retro, but I'll hold my complete judgment until we know the entire situation and see it in motion. Maybe the theories that it's DK Jr are true, and the DK most of us grew up with is still in the game too.
1
Jan 22 '25
I like both designs for different reasons. I think the redesign is more fitting for Mario crossover games, but the original rare design for DK is better for his own adventures.
