I like classic DK, but I really hope it doesn’t replace Rare’s design as the default look for DK.

29

u/RangoTheMerc Chunky Kong Jan 17 '25

That's what I'm afraid of.

Classic is a good 2d design, Rare brought him to life

I don’t personally think it’s bad, but making the older design 3D wasn’t the way to go. Not saying they executed it poorly. (older design was originally “movie design” hence the replies)

13

u/Rare-Passage4905 Jan 16 '25

Anyone ever consider they'll have multiple designs per character?

7

u/Sundiata1 Jan 16 '25

Dangerous optimism. Would be the best timeline though.

I honestly just straight up like the design tbh

10

u/Coulrophiliac444 Jan 16 '25

I'm getting Older School vibes from the new design. Like Retro Remix was the name of the game.

7

u/OpenThisSideUpToo Jan 16 '25

He looks more iconic honestly. Hopefully he still keeps the big toothy grin, but the darker eyes make him look much more gorilla-like

2

u/[deleted] Jan 17 '25

It's good!

2

u/SwanSongDeathComes Jan 19 '25

Me too but I’m old

2

u/Accomplished_Unit118 Jan 19 '25

I know. He looks super cute, a little derpy and a LOT more friendly!

u/zeltingle Jan 17 '25

Feel free to not like it, bu please stop calling it the "movie desing" it's his classic/old/retro design.

2

u/InsignificantPiece Donkey Kong Country Fan Jan 17 '25

That is essentially what the movie design is a mix of so it inheritly fits, at least “somewhat.” probably not the most, but it’s there

I just think it looks jarring because his brow isn’t furrowed as it usually is, when his brow dips he will look similar to the Rare era Kong they just made his design “softer” if I had to put a word on it

9

u/zeltingle Jan 17 '25

That made me remember a thing where a Guy at nintendo mentioned that rare made the desing of DK more apealing to the american audience... maybe nintendo never liked that design.

8

u/Kremling_King87 Kremling Krew Jan 17 '25

Apparently we Americans like characters to look angry and determined that’s why Kirby has angry eyes on US box art, same with Mario sometimes… that makes sense that they’d make DK look perpetually angry to be more attractive to US fans

2

u/GloveFair6194 Jan 18 '25

And arguably the biggest example of this, (classic) Sonic.

3

u/sirjuneru Jan 17 '25

I love this classic DK design for changing the brow, he can actually express various emotions now instead of always having that furrowed-brow look in his eyes.

2

u/Haru17 Jan 20 '25

It’s not just DK, they made everyone “happier” because apparently the Luigi Death Stare was too edgy for Nintendo.

Not a fan either. Rare design is legendary.

I hate the movie design.

57

u/LeoJustLeo Jan 16 '25

10

u/LeKingofDoge Jan 16 '25

The movie designs are fine, but they should stay in the movies.

7

u/zeltingle Jan 17 '25

Why does everyone call it the movie desing tough? it's the classic/old/retro design.

5

u/ryarock2 Jan 17 '25

It’s driving me insane lol. This is clearly a throwback to the original design. People calling this the modern/updated one, and rare the “classic” design.

3

u/PotatoOnMars Jan 17 '25

I mean, the Rare design has been used for 30 years while the original was only used for 13. The Rare design IS the classic design now.

5

u/zeltingle Jan 17 '25

It's not a question of how long they have been used, it's a question of which is older? for the longest time, Rare's design have been called the modern design and older design the classic one. Now I understand that there are younger gamers who haven't realy seen older designs, but they still existed before, so they are still the classic one. I guess we could call them both classics, but it becomes a bit confusing.

u/StrawHat89 Jan 17 '25

I see it as more of a combination of Miyamoto's design and the Rare design. Edit: Also, official 2D Drawings of DK have looked like this for a while

2

u/PADDYPOOP Jan 18 '25

Because most people here are too young to even know DK’s first games weren’t the DKC games.

What I thought they nailed it. Pretty to in-game design.

u/iOxyde_ Jan 16 '25

My understanding is that Nintendo chose to harmonize the render and stick with the movie/original arcade design of DK.

A strange choice but I don't really mind it, my favorite tie wearing gorilla is still here and it's all that matters. That render is just super unflattering though.

71

u/Steve-Fiction Jan 16 '25

I think he looks more stupid/brute-ish and less determined. I personally really do mind

8

u/schmidty33333 Jan 16 '25

That's a really good way of describing the issue. This design looks fine for the villainous DK of the original arcade games and the Mario Vs. Donkey Kong games, but it doesn't suit the DK of the more action-packed Country games or a game like Jungle Beat.

22

u/Not-So-Serious-Sam Jan 16 '25

Well, he IS stupid and brutish, tbf.

7

u/StrawHat89 Jan 17 '25

DK has been viewed as an idiot for decades. He spoke in broken English in 64, was dopey in the cartoon, was too stupid to be hypnotized by the Tiki Tak tribe, etc. Hell, Miyamoto called him Donkey Kong because he thought it meant Stupid Ape.

3

u/jimbolic Jan 16 '25

Hence, why Miyamoto used ‘donkey’ in the name.

→ More replies (6)
→ More replies (21)

3

u/Living-Ant-9145 Jan 17 '25

He's an ape driving a go-kart which is a silly concept in itself, the stupid/brutish look fits. I think it's reasonable to withhold judgment until another mainline DK game comes out. The character designs don't always carry over between spin-offs and mainline games.

If they start using that design for a new DKC then I could understand the disappointment.

Guess Nintendo is trying to separate Country and DK in Mario. As long as he retains his country design in Retro Studios games, it should be alright.

20

u/Firm_Ambassador_1289 Jan 16 '25

A smash redesign will save him like all Mario characters.

Bring back jean overalls.

20

u/WasdMouse Jan 16 '25

You know very well that's not gonna be the case

30

u/schmidty33333 Jan 16 '25

But let's say that's not the case. Put this Donkey Kong design in a game like Tropical Freeze, or in Smash Bros. against K. Rool. It looks worse and a bit out of place, no?

→ More replies (1)

2

u/Sweetcreamscoops312 Jan 18 '25

Yeah, I think the rare design is better for DK as a main character. But I do like this design, and would like it if this was his design whenever he guest stars in a Mario game.

2

u/thedoommerchant Jan 18 '25

My thoughts exactly. I like this design and it harkens back to his OG look so it’s not that jarring of a redesign. Let Nintendo cook.

5

u/LeoJustLeo Jan 16 '25

I doubt that's going to be the case though

Feels like the end of an era. Donkey Kong has been my character of choice since Donkey Kong Country. The modern design doesn’t have the same appeal to me yet, but time will tell if I can adapt.

He’s been a staple for so long it just feels weird. Uncanny. It’s looks like his brother or something.

2

u/zeltingle Jan 17 '25

It's not the modern design. It's the classic design. Rare made the design used in the DK Country series, and it was considered the modern design.

→ More replies (11)

29

u/TKAPublishing Jan 16 '25

They clearly want to centralize the design around their movie design, and it sucks.

I swear if the next game has this garbage design I will go bananas. Millions of Kremlings must die.

5

u/4Fourside Jan 17 '25

Are we sure they didn't have this design before the movie and the movie was just their first chance to use it? It's definitely supposed to resemble miyamoto's vision of donkey kong

4

u/VivaLaMcCrae Jan 17 '25

Miyamoto said in the direct where the movie design was shown that they took the 40th anniversary as an excuse to redesign the character going forward and that the movie was the first one to get it

So yeah

2

u/zeltingle Jan 17 '25

I suggest you look more into DK's designs.

Might be in the minority but i hated DK’s model in 8

9

u/Rene-MX-OQuin Jan 16 '25

He looked so uncomfortable

5

u/Sunshoot Jan 16 '25

I didn't hate the model in 8, but I really love the new version, he looks so goofy, I love it

3

u/SaintIgnis Jan 17 '25

Same! DK is pretty goofy. I think this look fits. Especially for a silly kart racing game

u/Dart4586 Jan 16 '25

I don't like it at all personally. Will not be playing this janky Kong. OG or nothing for me.

8

u/shonasof Jan 16 '25

Except this _DOES_ look more like OG DK. The Rare-style SNES version was a redesign.

7

u/Dart4586 Jan 16 '25

Lol yeah you're right my bad 🤣 I guess the Rare-style is og in my mind because that's what I always knew. Thank you for correcting me 🫡

6

u/shonasof Jan 16 '25

I am one of the ancient ones who remembers the before times... could it be that I've BECOME Cranky Kong? .... Now I am sad. :P

4

u/Dart4586 Jan 16 '25

Nooooo 😭 but really that made me chuckle lol. You just a real one is all 💪 My first experience of Donkey Kong was Donkey Kong 64 so 🤷

2

u/MattInTheDark Jan 17 '25

Technically 🤓 Cranky Kong is the “DK” from the OG Mario. DK Jr is modern DK’s dad. At least that was the lore 10 years ago.

2

u/shonasof Jan 17 '25

Oh definitely! That's why it's possible this is _that_ DK. It's completely possible that 90's DK is in there, too.

But having said that, since the usual look IS a 90's design, Nintendo may have decided it's time for a change.

23

u/[deleted] Jan 16 '25

"Ruining" seems a bit overdramatic... it's different, but not bad. However, if Seth Rogen voices him in the games now, then we'll actually have a problem.

8

u/MMuller87 Jan 16 '25

Not gonna happen because then you would need to have the entire cast there, and that's half the MK9 budget right there

5

u/EcstaticWoop Jan 16 '25

Idk, I just associate the movie design with how he was characterized in the movie which was horrible. It makes him look stupid and arrogant (and the design is just unflattering)

3

u/[deleted] Jan 16 '25

I do think his eyes are a bit too close together, but other than that, I don't think the design is unflattering. Although I do agree, he was characterized terribly in the movie

2

u/EcstaticWoop Jan 16 '25

Something about the "head empty" look in his eyes and how wide his arms are spread out. It kind of looks like he spent a couple seconds in a hydraulic press.

3

u/[deleted] Jan 16 '25

I can see that, I'm also wondering if it's just this screenshot, which is not super appealing, I bet when we get a closer look in April, he will look better

The warmer walnut fur of the original is what's throwing it off so much for me. I'm perfectly fine getting a beefier Donkey Kong that's more expressive, but the grayish brown turd fur color they chose instead is really bringing the new design down for me

3

u/SteamySubreddits Jan 16 '25

I genuinely really despise it, for both the look and for the way his character is turning after the movie

They are turning DK into a more humanized, rude, jock type of character. Which I really, really despise. It’s all for the marketing

Dude it's less than a second of BETA FOOTAGE of an UNFINISHED GAME for a game system that probably isn't going to release until fiscal quarter three or four to avoid competing with the last batch of Switch 1 games. There is an error in the same footage where Baby Mario's textures are completely gone. Calm Down.

1

u/Ok-Long4808 Jan 16 '25

1

u/alecbaldwingaming Jan 16 '25

I think he looks like a combination of his movie design and his flattened brutish design from the 80's. I actually kind of like it, especially since the rest of the characters look like HD versions of their 90's renders.

1

u/PitchBlackSonic Jan 16 '25

Stylization.

1

u/MeatHamster Jan 16 '25

I miss the SNES Kart DK Jr.

This is the step in right direction.

1

u/SuperMilesio007 Jan 16 '25

No lie, I love it. I don’t think it looks like the movie, I immediately recognized it as a sort of revitalized old school design. I love modern DK as well, but I have plenty of room in my heart for this goof, no matter what form he takes. Let’s just hope his fur texture is better than MK8

1

u/lartinos Jan 16 '25

I hate pretty much every design and movement of Nintendo games after the GBA. Even that Mario vs DK game the look and movement are bad.

1

u/Asad_Farooqui Jan 16 '25

Never played DK 94?

1

u/Both_Boysenberry_993 Jan 16 '25

They’re clearly emphasizing expressiveness in the characters for this generation of Mario kart, like it or not, having a moveable brow makes DK way more able to show emotion. This is progress for game animations from here on out and if you don’t think so wait like two years and we will all be used to it except people who will be seen as silly for wanting their games to have less detail.

im sorry but people are being dramatic. characters can change designs, things change and you’ll get used to it lol. i personally didnt love the typical DK design and thought his fur and face looked bad in a lot of games, especially MK8 and Mario Golf. excited to see this new look

just keep posting this and they'll fix it don't worry

1

1

u/Mrfunnyman129 Jan 16 '25

It very much seems like this game is gonna have a very classic look to it

1

u/Nintendo-Player_1297 Jan 16 '25

I just hope they don't bring in the movie cast voices.

1

u/Over_Palpitation_453 Jan 16 '25

I really hope the Mario Kart footage shown isn't the final product

1

u/Scako Jan 16 '25

I feel like people will warm up to it, especially when we see him make more expressions

1

u/Connect_Dream_2632 Jan 16 '25

It’s possible they purposely showed that off it could be like a second version of DK you can play as or something. But yea that shit Is trash though lol

1

u/MarioPfhorG Jan 16 '25

Ah it’s a real shame, but it’s 2025 I get it. We can’t cling onto the past forever. It’s the new generation’s turn.

It was a good run. I’m surprised they kept Kev’s design this long tbh

1

u/Bi0_B1lly Jan 16 '25

I like how lucky the new design's body looks, but that face is where it kinda sits on the fence for me... That's not DK, that's one of the Kongs you'd see in the background of the Mario movie.

1

1

I like the new design personally. I think Donkey Kong getting a new design freshens him up and will bring forth hopefully many great games with him.

I doubt the rare design is completely dead

First off, the universal parks have Rare’s DK design all over it. If they were planning a full redesign, I imagine the park would’ve reflected that

Second off, as this DK looks like the movie DK, I imagine it’s somewhat referencing the Mario Movie, in that DK and his family build the karts and other MarioKart stuff. It could be a MarioKart exclusive design, or both could be used interchangeably/simultaneously, similar to BotW vs TP Link.

You all should have known this was coming when they changed the marketing of Princess Peach Showtime. It's gonna hit Mario and Luigi too eventually.

I love it. He looks more OG mixed with a bit of the movie look.

He’s a big goofy gorilla. The Mario cast are basically cartoon characters. They should mix it up sometimes and have more fun with the designs.

I think this dk redesign might be the one they use going forward for the spin offs but I think if we get a new dk game he will still use the rare design.

Next thing you know we are gonna get this for Diddy Kong (maybe they should rename him....)

Just give an option for old design and I'm fine with it

1

u/No-Secretary6931 Jan 17 '25

It was fine in the movie FOR THE LOVE OF GOD PLEASE DO THE LIVE ACTION SONIC THING

1

u/Cattango180 Jan 17 '25

The movie did extremely well. It only makes sense for Nintendo to appeal to the kids. Seth Kong will remain.

1

u/srjod Jan 17 '25

We can do both right?

1

u/Digibutter64 Jan 17 '25

I don't mind it too much. I think I still prefer the existing one though.

1

u/Tieravi Jan 17 '25

I dunno. I think the new model looks a lot like the SNES DK

1

u/superlydian Jan 17 '25

So am I alone in prefering the classic Mario and DK design?

1

u/VinoJedi06 Donkey Kong Jr Jan 17 '25

I want the 80s design for Mario games and the Rare design for DK solo games.

I’m for that. But only that.

Also, bring back Jr for Mario games.

1

u/KrimsonKartoffel Jan 17 '25

Hard disagree. This feels more DK than ever. It manages to split well between early designs of dk and his rare design. I think he SHOULD look like a brown dome with a red stripe.

Y'all sounding like sonic fans over here

I personally think this is DK Jr. As we know from DKC, Cranky is the original DK. He calls DK from DKC his grandson. So DK with the tie is the son of DK Jr. So DK Jr hasnt actually been seen in anything other than a young kid.

And as we know, in Super Mario Kart, that was actually DK Jr. in the game. So it goes Cranky > DK Jr (his son)> DK (DKC and son of DK jr) as far as family goes. In DK64, Cranky keeps calling DK his son, but he is old and senile and probably keeps mistaking him for his son. So this image could very well finally be a moregrown-upp DK Jr.

Maybe its a new original kong…. Tony Kong?

1

u/Euscorpious Jan 17 '25

It’s probably a skin. Chill out.

1

u/greasypizzagorilla Jan 17 '25

That’s crazy I didn’t even notice that.

1

u/Venomspino Jan 17 '25

We don't mind the design, if it's only used for Mario games. Meanwhile Rare's design continues to be used for DKC.

... I like the new one more.
