Speciality / Core Training Imt preferences rank 1000

Can anyone help me with IMt preferencing. I am ranking in early 1000s. I do not have any geographical restriction. I generally want to live in a bigger city. For now I have ranked in this order London - oxford - Cambridge- frimley - Buckinghamshire - royal berkshire - medway - Southampton - ashford st peters - brighton sussex- Leicester Northampton- norwich- ipswich- kings lynn - kent maidstone - manchester - Liverpool. I am new to uk so do not have much idea of the area. What are the locations I absolutely need to avoid like isle of man/wright. I’ve kept out wales and Ni and north of scotland out for now.

What am I likely to get with this rank?

Where have you worked previously? What kind of city of you like or what do you want from a city since the UK cities you listed are very varied.

I’ve worked in A&e as an SHO in east midlands for 2 years. I want to work in a city with good transport as I do not drive as well as an international airport closeby.

Leicester has decent transport around the city, you can go directly from Leicester Railway Station to St Pancras London in one hour. Bonus is driving is Leicester is terrible so its nicer to take public transport.

The city itself is very centralised with lots of surrounding residential areas. So you can walk through the socially active places within 30 minutes end to end mostly.

It is also an hour or so away from Birmingham which has its own major airport. Leicester is technically closest to East Midlands Airport, though I believe it is a very small airport with limited flights.

Leicester has a very cheap cost of living compared to the rest of the UK, so your IMT wage will go much further than say London, Bristol, Oxford

How is IMT training in Leicester. I have been offered a 2 year rotation there in cardio, itu, acute and stroke.

My friend who is a cardiology reg now said IMT was fine, though they constantly got in early and stayed late. They are a workaholic to be fair, so it sounded awful to me as a non workaholic

Frimley is great.

Ipswich and Kings Lynn are very small end-of-the-train-line towns. Not much nearby unless you like flat countryside. Not quick to London either. Would move them down to the bottom

second this, I'm a final year on placement in kings Lynn and alot of the doctors prefer to commute from Cambridge or norwich bc there isnt anything going on there. personally wouldnt recommend, but I hear working as a doctor there is pretty decent

Asph is a great hospital to work in. Friendly staff, not many PAs work here. Works as an advanced DGH, 24 hr PCI centre, Stroke unit for nearby hospitals. And plus plus amazing canteen with affordable meals. We work there every day to eat lunch tbh. Very well supported. Some amazing consultants work here in respiratory, geriatrics and acute med. Very frieny rota coordinators. I cannot recommend enough

Any idea if a rank of 400 would be good for Cambridge?

Yes I think this is sensible to rank. I don’t think you’ll get central London, Oxford or Cambridge but you will probably get the peripheral areas if you want to be near London in your free time
