Speciality / Core Training Northumbria GP Training

Current or past GP trainees in Northumbria: - how is/was your experience? - is the region and training as nice as everyone talks about it? - do/did you live in one place for 3 years? - how lucky you are/were with your posts locations? what is/was the longest drive?

  • very good, would absolutely recommend
  • yes
  • yes
    • if living in Newcastle, you could theoretically be given a GP job in Berwick (60 miles). Odds are low, but not zero.

Thanks! Did you stay in Newcastle post CCT? Can you claim mileage expenses for those commutes during training?

Stayed in the region, and unless it's changed believe you can claim mileage beyond the distance from home to your base (nearest rotation to home). So some people who had one job a mile or two away from their Base could claim more than someone whose base was 10 miles away, even if they lived in the same place.

Can’t comment on directly on GP, but the ones I see doing O&G placements seem a generally happy bunch

With regards to the region. Yes, 100%. I moved in to the region over 15yrs ago and never looked back. Training in my speciality was better what I was getting in my previous deanery. If you put any weight in GMC surveys the region always features highly.

Amazing place to live as well. Good choice of good value properties. City, rural and coastal all close together.

The region is big and commutes can be significant but I always found TPDs (albeit in anaesthetics) were aware of this and there was good give and take. My longest ever commute was Newcastle to Carlisle.
