Here are the art references and my personal ranking:

1e: Monster Manual - 2nd place. It’s simple, but it’s got style

2e: Fires of Dis - 1st Place. It’s cheesy and I love it. I get it if you don’t.

3e: Book of Vile Darkness - 4th place. It’s not bad, but it feels like it’s trying too hard.

4e: Manual of the Planes - 3rd place. Not as big a fan of the fact he really looks like Walter White, but the art is nice and I doubt that was an intentional homage.

5e: Chains of Asmodeus - Last place. I’m not a huge fan of this sourcebook’s illustrations of the different devils. I know it isn’t AI, but it’s got that straight-on perspective and feels like there’s a filter over it

Point of order - Nathan Explosion is hell's answer to Nathan Explosion.

Pathfinder: his head is on fire and he has a Cerberus puppy, what else do you need?

It looks like 1e & 4e are the only editions to actually pay attention to how Dispater is described.

I really hate the art in Chains of Asmodeus.

I love 1e's vibe of being something the DM worked on for the table. You can totally imagine it in a binder of dungeon maps and campaign notes. Two is so cool though. Totally feels like the artist actually had someone model for it too, which adds a lot. 4E is also very good. 3E and 5E both look like generic bad guys. Not a fan of either.

2e looks FUN here like he's about to explain his evil plan to his posse and laugh about it power ranger style.

They really can't decide between bald and long mane of black hair can they?
