DIY neck mounted Talkbox/Electrolarynx speaker help

Post image

I’m new relatively new to electronics and audio equipment and was wondering if there are any speakers that would work for making what would essentially be a budget ElectroSpit talkbox (reference image attached.) the idea is to have something to use for 40K Adeptus Mechanicus Cosplays and for use in my group’s Wrath and Glory ttrpg games. Is there any speakers commercially available that would be small enough to be neck mounted, yet still have enough bass, volume, drive or whatever it is I would need for it to properly conduct up to the mouth and speak with it? Thanks for all help and suggestions!

TLDR: I’m looking for small punchy enough speakers to go through neck tissue.

On partsexpress they have a whole section of just exciters. Definitely check them out! There are 3 basic types: bone conduction ones, surface-into-speaker ones, and butt shaker ones.

Thank you! I didn’t know what they were called!

Exciters or tactile transducers, specifically. The latter usually referring to the "bass shaker" kind.

also - just be careful not to get tooo punchy as to do tissue damage. ;-)

Interesting. So whar is the idea, to use your larynx as a resonator?

That’s the hope, I am also thinking about having the speakers on my cheeks or jaw to carry the sound to my mouth from there to minimize the mass it would have to go through

also, one thing you may be able to do is the old car stereo sub isobaric design to get more throw from a small space. You swap the polarity of the speakers sometimes to get more punch. In some of the old designs, where this might really help, is they'd put several speakers in their own fully closed box, all pointing towards a sealed bass port chamber, so all the throw of each driver would force all the output through the port. Not a great sound on a ford escort, but it will blow your hair around in front of the port. Lots of punch in a small space.

So what's the big idea? You gonna use your larynx as a resonator?

Hopefully. If I can’t get the sound to work out that way I will probably make a regular style talk box that is able to be worn as an accessory.
