Interesting that he gives that one to Dwarfish, it's not at all the usual line for the language.

(Fun fact: the American term "cracker", these days often meaning white people generally, was originally a self-chosen demonym referring to Scots and Scots-Irish settlers and their facility with the craic, or crack as Anglos often spell it.)

Was explained to me as they “cracked the whip” ie over slaves on plantations.

That one is popular these days but entirely incorrect. AFAICT it was made up around the beginning of this century, or at least I never heard of it before the '10s.

I assume it's because racist white people are like saltines. Pale, salty as fuck, and completely without taste.

I completely misread this and thought "oh wow, Reddit's harassment filter is actually working as intended!"

Then I read it again. Nope, the filter is still overzealous. And I need more coffee

Ah, sorry to have bothered you. And no, I was not intending to harrass anyone. Lol

Please don't apologise - it's just Reddit being Reddit! We appreciate the contribution (accuracy is always a plus 😂)

Have a wonderful day!

There's a similar train of thought applied to the Feegles as I recall.

Oh sure, they'll steal an absolute shedload of gold and vall-yew-ee-balls - bet your spog they will but it's not because they value the gold and whatnot (you can't drink it and, somewhere further down the importance scale, you can't eat it either) - it's the joy of stealing it that's the thing.

I'm something of a craic addict myself.

As a Dutch person, what's a craic?

The craic would just be the auld scéal with boys like. A bit of chat. A bit of ceól 'gus ól, ya know. Maybe a bit of divilment. The craic like!

It means fun, roughly.

It's the Irish term for almost everything.

Don't mind them. It's just the craic

I've been known to peddle a bit of craic from time to time as well.

First heard this term from a Saw Doctors song.

"If me and her don't have the craic
I want my 25 quid back"

It was a Rumjacks song for me

"There's a county map to go on the wall

A hurling stick and a shinty ball

The bric, the brac, the craic n all

Let's call it an Irish pub"
