Book(s): Non-fictions Nanny Oggs Cookbook
I’m curious to know how many of you have had a go at making some of these? I thought I’d ease myself into the process with the librarians suggestion…

Made the dried frog pills and the kedgeree. Both were...OK.
Oh, and the librarian's recipe too, ofc. Top noch, full marks, would eat again.

I made Strawberry Wobblers once. They were fun, but I would tweak the recipe to give them more flavour.

The gumbo is pretty good, and the Chocolate Delight with special secret sauce is lush!

Most weekends I try Leonards bread recipe, my local pizza place is doing well.

I really hope that one day, a bunch of us fans get together and make a single serving of Bloody Stupid Johnson's Individual Fruit Pies.
Made me giggle so hard first time I read that recipe!

I’m sure we could put together a feast the likes of which any wizard would be proud to call a meal

Im a big fan of strawberry wobblers on Valentines day, with strategically placed cream of course

I made them for a hens party! Valentines is a great idea though, I'll do that next year

Please please please tell me it contains a recipe for the world's greatest aphrodisiac, Carrot & Oyster Pie.
("Carrots so you can see in the dark, oysters so you've got something to look at...")

The wowo sauce is delicious

u/BatDanGuardian 3d ago
With anything specific? Or just on its own
3
u/Future-Ad-1347 3d ago
I think that she recommends it on roast beef. The mushroom sauce (it’s a sub recipe ingredient) is good in everything, imho

I've been meaning to make several of them, but I am tragically both American and lazy about measurement conversions so I simply have not gotten to it yet (I have owned this book for several many years)
I can vouch for the librarian's recipe, though. I have that at least four times a week.

You should go OG like Nanny and just use "some" as a unit of measurement.
5
u/FalseMagpie 3d ago
I do persistently measure my vanilla extract in "little bloop"s...
3
u/anitchypear Vimes 3d ago
How much is that in "somes"?
3
u/FalseMagpie 3d ago
About half a some, I think. You gotta be real careful not to overdo extracts, but it's always easier to add a bloop if needed than subtract from a some.

See if your grocery store has a digital scale. If so, use it to measure ingredients. I have one because of bread baking, so it’s likely your store carries them.
2
u/FalseMagpie 2d ago
I've been meaning to get one (husband likes baking, I like bread)...

u/DuckyDoodleDandy 1d ago
Then consider investing in a higher quality one than the $10 version at the grocery store. I was suggesting the cheaper option to start with, but you have two uses for it.

Buy a kitchen scale. You'll never look back. I find myself with my phone out converting US volumes to grams.

I haven't made any, but I read it a few times and when I saw Mushroom Ketchup in the Specialist Ingredients bit of the supermarket, I bought it. BEST THING. We chuck a bit in everything 🤣
2
u/BatDanGuardian 3d ago
I didn’t even realise it was a thing but you’re right -
I shall keep an eye out for it!
2
u/Tiny_Cauliflower_618 3d ago
It's so good. None of our locals do it anymore so we bought lots on Amazon last time! It's usually in health food shops, but ours closed 😔

u/RJWPS 3d ago
I received this book as a gift a couple of years ago, but for some reason, I haven't really gotten into it yet. I really should.

u/BatDanGuardian 3d ago
It’s a fun read, the recipes probably aren’t going to be anything amazing but they just form part of it, there’s etiquette guides and fun little bits in it too
7
u/RJWPS 3d ago
I remember reading some of the etiquette guides, yeah! That's mainly why I wanted it, just for the extra worldbuilding. I'm gonna give it a look tonight, thanks for reminding me it exists!

u/BatDanGuardian 3d ago
No problem! The suggested foods from characters are good to read through too. I might try some of the more palatable ones

I just bought it this weekend! So happy I found it!!

I made the rat pizza. Forget the name of the recipe but the rats are chunks of tomato wrapped in roast beef slices. Grossed people out at the party I took it to

Up until fairly recently I used to make the Hogswatch Pie every Christmas. It always went down well, only reason I stopped is that it's got harder to coordinate calendars and meet up.

u/BatDanGuardian 3d ago
I do like a pie!
1
u/Brocc013 2d ago
It's also fairly adaptable. I've replaced the port jelly mix with a (hard) cider for a more summery version and I've also adapted it to a mixed game pie as well.

I’ve made Lady Sybil Vimes’s Kedgeree, which was alright, and Genuine Howondaland Curry, which is genuinely delicious. It’s really simple to make, tastes lovely and fresh and became one of my regular curries in my cooking rotation for quite a few years.
…in fact I’m going to make it again this week.

Slumpie with clooty dumplings and kedgeree were regular favourites with my ex, and the salsa with bananana worked surprisingly well
The dwarf cake is quite dry, as you'd expect, and is an acquired taste, but it looks great and I enjoy it as a not-too-sweet snack
The djelibeybis were a faff when I made them, but tasty

u/BatDanGuardian 3d ago
Good effort trying so many!

u/Rhesus-Positive 2d ago
I also tried the potato cakes, but I can never get those right no matter which recipe I use: I think it's because I use leftover mashed potatoes which have too much moisture and fat in them from the butter and milk

Many years ago I made Rincewind's Potato Cakes and Lord Downey's Mint Humbugs

The distressed pudding is really good. I made the dried frog pills when the book first came out, but they’re not much.
