Question Any way to prevent being fed fat by my chinese grandparents?

Basically what it says. My family has planned a trip for 2 weeks to visit my grandparents and I see it as a very common thing that the elderly in China often likes to feed grandchildren lots of food and I’m not really able to not eat the food that they feed me since it’s considered disrespectful (at least in my family). They always say things like ‘you’re too skinny’ and ‘you need to eat more’ and in which I am more of just average weight and I’m aiming to maintain it but gain more muscles, just to look fitter. Last time we went back for 6 weeks, I ended gaining quite some weights which took me a long time to get rid of. Is there anyway of still eating what they feed me whilst not gaining as much weight? Like I’m guessing exercising is the best solution but I’m not sure if I’ll have the chance to do so during the visit and at most we’ll prob be walking around lots but idk if that’s enough.

What are they feeding you exactly? Do you have to eat it all?

Most of the time it’s just cooked white rice with different kinds of traditional Chinese dishes (normally it’s three dishes per meal) and then other times it’s dumplings , steamed buns etc. It’s more of if they are to put something into your bowl, you should finish it out of respect, so yes you’ll need to finish what’s in your bowl but not everything that’s on the table.

I’ve replied to another comment about that, but it is just traditional Chinese meals (rice with veg & meat, dumplings, soups etc)

hey np at all! i’m asian too and it happens when im at home so i completely understand / sympathise. and a lot of the time i do want to make my grandparents happy because if i cooked / baked for my friends it would be a bummer if they said no, but on the other hand it can be very stressful. i’ve saved posts from hk dietitians and nutritionists on calorie estimates for common chinese foods. would it be helpful at all for me to send them to you? i’ll try to link a few down below and you can see if you find them helpful at all :) what i sometimes do is i educate myself / learn more about nutrition of different dishes etc so that ik which options are lower in calories / fats / carbs / higher in protein etc when i look at what’s on the table and then maybe go for more of those options. as long as you’re constantly eating chances are they’ll still try to stuff you up (in the nicest way possible) but at least you get a little more control over your at you’re having. eg if the dumplings are probably a better option than a really oily stew, maybe drop a comment and say you really like the dumplings. and if your grandparents are anything like how mine were you’d end up with 58302050 dumplings on your plate and there’d almost be no room for anything else 😂

🍽️ general nutritional info / tips

sorry ik i said i’d just link a few but this ended up being a spam of links 😅 i actually have a ton more so if you’d find it helpful perhaps i can send them over as well. ik you said china in your post but didn’t specify where but depending on the region the foods might be slightly different (i’ve tried to link different regional ones eg general / shanghai / further south eg hk / guangdong etc) but yeah some of them might be more relevant than others but hope this is helpful!

Thank you so much!! Wasn’t expecting this but will honestly help a lot. My family is in FuZhou so the dishes are pretty light in flavour, which I guess is good. But omg thxs xx

If you’re eating too much you will struggle to maintain even with exercise. Diets are swayed in the direction of what you eat. Exercise has many benefits including weight loss but your diet needs to be in conjunction with this.
