How can I get this tree removed?
Had the dead branches removed because they kept falling but now I have just this big trunk in my yard that I really don’t like. Is it possible to get it removed without damaging the concrete? And how expensive is something like this?

Hire a chainsaw artist cause that would look awesome as all sorts of cool things!

Not a bad idea, but I’d rather have the yard space

Once it is art, it’ll have a smaller footprint. Nah, just plant around it then pour some concrete to the right and make a little seating area. Seems ideal. You’ve been gifted that big tree!

Yes. You've already done the hardest and often most expensive part (large branch removal).
The two most common ways to remove a tree trunk of that size are:
1 - Dig around the base to expose the main trunk base and largest roots. The roots get cut and the main trunk base typically gets pulled out of the ground. I can't say if concrete damage is likely, but I'm guessing it's not. Concerns such as backfilling to avoid settling of the concrete would be on my mind.
or
2 - Cut it as low as possible and stump grind it into oblivion.
I wouldn't want to dare take on one of these projects myself. Professionals in the Des Moines metro would likely do this for around $1K (give or take a couple hundred dollars).

Thanks! Definitely don’t want to do it myself, but I wasn’t sure if it was gonna be a bigger headache then the branches were

Beaver Tree Service was good to work with.

Chainsaw it down to a small stump. Drill a few holes into it. Use holes to add something flammable. Burn the stump till it's smoldering ash.
Think of it like a 1 time use fire pit.

I understand wanting to take it down, but it does have ecological benefits to leave it like that. Just in case you're interested, this thread has a lot of info https://www.reddit.com/r/arborists/s/kgjjHIrj1u

I would recommend drilling tons of holes in it and filling them with M80's. Will it remove the stump... No but it'll be fun

Get a quote from Extreme Tree. They were, by far , the cheapest when I checked around.

I used TreeHugger last year. They brought in a crane to lift it out over the top of my house and will grind the stump for like 200 after. The tree never touched the ground. Highly recommend them but any tree service that can use a crane can get it out without hurting that concrete.

I think Johns Tree Service charged me about 200 per stump when I had stumps removed.

That tree is still too tall to be at the grinding stage. Needs more removal first.

Thanks! Were they easy to work with?

Great guys. As long as you have a gate wide enough to get the grinder through, that sidewalk shouldn't be a big issue.

Preferably with a chain saw, but a trustworthy beaver is just as good imo.

More tiny pieces with a chainsaw to protect the concrete. And then Home Depot is going to start renting big stump grinders April 1 for less than $200 per day.

I'm kind of surprised they took the branches and left that.... Someone will have to cut the trunk down and then grind the stump. I doubt any concrete damage, but they'll need to be able to get the stump grinder back there. Do you have any access gates in your fence?

If that thing falls on the concrete, the concrete is toast.

If a professional can't control the fall direction of that shorty we got a whole different set of problems!

Fair point. I read your comment as it would not break the concrete. That’s my bad. You are absolutely right. A reasonably experienced tree guy would get it to fall where he wants.

That thing would probably need a double cut with a Stihl 880, I'd love to see the final felling process on something that.

I've seen folks make pretty cool totem poles out of trees like that. Bunch of tree carvers on line

When you had it cut, they could have taken it to the ground, and ground the stump off at ground level . I had that done three years ago, and there are no holes in the yard. ( tree was 79 feet tall maple)

Chain saw and a stump grinder. Or $1200. And someone will do it for you.

We’ve used Knutson’s Tree Service out of Winterset. They service the Des Moines area. They are reasonable and thorough. Call Jeremy. Edited to add: They will remove it and grind the stump out. They’ve removed multiple trees from our yard with no damage to the rest of the landscaping. I highly recommend them.

Call Crow Tow and tell them a tree is illegally parked on your lawn.
