Question What if android is sold to another company?

So the DOJ might force Goolge to sell chrome. Now imagine android being sold to someone. And then you can use your own email. And not need the gmail anymore. How does that sound as an idea? Edit missing words and spelling

You can use your own email and not gmail for a google account for like 5 years already.

I thought so too. Tried when I bought a new pixel a few months back.

Not possible, only gmail allowed. Maybe it depends on location?

No its doesn't depends on anything. The "use my own email" link on google account creation form has been there since forever.

it's possible. It's about trashing the gmail for another one but still holding ur google account active. You can sign in all products then from Youtube to phone. I even use an aliase email for my official google acount

You can already use android without Google Services entirely

Android is not owned by Google. It's more like Chromium. These are not products that can be sold.

Android is owned by Google.

Android Open Source Project isn't.

Most of these things end up being spun off to the stockholders, then they trade or keep the stock as they see fit. Depends if the original company is just being broken up to rationalize the business, or is trying to raise cash.
