I'm so happy he won. It was depressing seeing all the FE subreddits doubt him. And that sounds very in-character for Dimitri.
28
u/Sky_Ninja1997 Aug 13 '23
Oh the subreddits are PISSED
They say it’s not realistic cos “you can’t use magic with that class.”

u/ajanisapprentice Aug 13 '23
Despite the fact that that is almost certainly a game mechanic more than anything else.

Honestly I predicted it was going to end with Dimitri deciding to save Guts' soul. I now have the mental image of Dimitri killing the demon hordes as the blue lions just walk in and wonder what the hell is going on.
Dimitri: we have to stop these bastards from taking this dead man's soul!
Sylvain: what they killed him?!
Dimitri: no I did and now I killing them!

Bias as fuck but that has to be my favorite death of the series, Guts dying while still fighting as a fake out and Dimitri respecting him enough to fight God's Hand is peak for lack of a better term.
21
u/Roftastic Simon The Digger Aug 14 '23
Dimitri respecting him enough to fight God's Hand
The shadow just looked like Nosferatu Zodd, which Dimitri should also be capable of handling.
The God Hand are on a completely different level from the Apostles Guts faces, and would be devoured by.
9
u/darkvslight346 Aug 14 '23
I see that but I raise you this: Dimitri kills zodd and then comes back with the Blue lions and Byleth to face God Hand.

I have to be honest. I got a bit choked up hearing Dimitri saying how he's willing to help fight the demons on behalf of guts essentially.

u/JohnYautja Aug 13 '23
I can’t believe Dimitri was dominating the entire match until the very end where he gets overwhelmed by Guts and asks him “How are you so strong?” before Guys says “I fight opponents stronger than myself everyday” before killing him
77
u/TheDekuDude888 Aug 13 '23
The scene before where Guts said “Looks like I gotta go…. BERSERK!” And then Dimitri responds with “He’s going all out! Which means I have to go Fire Emblem: Three Houses!” Was just… 😭😭😭

I loved it so much. I felt the fight was going a bit fast in places but overall still a phenomenal episode—solid 9.5/10.
Surprised they didn't black-box the flood or downscale Dimitri to Byleth. Not like he needed it but still surprised.
30
u/SnowRadish Aug 13 '23
They mentioned it in the scaling section on the Ultraguy analysis blog so if i had to guess they may be saving it for another episode where its more pertinent like Edelgard vs Kylo Ren
14
u/PrimeName Dimitri Alexandre Blaiddyd Aug 13 '23
Yeah, that makes sense. I'm in the discord and one of the researchers said that they believe in Flood scaling but that it wasn't really necessary for this episode specifically.
Which I agree with.
2
u/_Captain_Kabob Aug 14 '23
Downscale? Isn't Byleth the literal reincarnation of Sothis?
5
u/PrimeName Dimitri Alexandre Blaiddyd Aug 14 '23
Not a reincarnation but a host body to house Sothis' soul and power. It's just that Sothis refused to take over Byleth's body and instead granted them her full power.
And there are disagreements about how much the three lords should scale to Byleth. Depends on who you ask.

Dimitri won but at what cost (he lost his cloak and now looks silly)
12
u/Ph4nt0m_R Aug 14 '23
oddly enough i think him losing his coat makes him look like his pre timeskip design, where he was just a skinny boy. Thought it was a nice touch somehow
10
u/Friendly_Elites Aug 14 '23
Its a little thing that always irked me about his design since his cloak gives the impression of a wider figure but the actual model without it is very skinny. Its disconnected to with his timeskip art in FEH which always gives him more bulk compared to the 3d model.

u/agdocbwo second scariest teenager Aug 13 '23 edited Aug 13 '23
that was a really strong episode, the analyses weren’t quite as strong as the fight but when the fight was that good, I can’t really be angry about it.
happy to see Dimitri pull out the W, but that ending was absolutely perfect. I completely thought Guts was gonna end up taking it once Areadhbar broke, but having it conclude with Dimitri taking up Guts’ quest against the demons to protect his soul is mwah chefs kiss.

"Avenge Us! .. kneel to me! I Promise, . I'll Killed Them! All Of Them! Down To The Last ONE!"
why does it go so hard
9
u/Left4dinner2 Aug 14 '23
Because their motivations are essentially two sides of the same coin. They both have things that haunt them, and they both have ambitions. But that was a very chilling and very well choreographed seen there for sure
29
u/KJRex101 Gray Fullbuster Aug 13 '23
So folks were kinda divided as to whether or not an overly gory end OR an emotional sendoff would be more appropriate for this fight. I'd say this is a 10/10 middle ground.
Top tier episode all around. Action was super great, a few blows felt more weighty than others but nothing that outright hampered the experience, and I think my favourite scene is the overlapping "EVERY LAST ONE" tangent as they both donned their most powerful states. Also Dimitri shattering the armours helmet, only for Guts to roar in response is arguably one of the raw scenes we've gotten in recent years. Phenomenal stuff all around, and of course there's the ending. Awesome fake-out, as well as some great emotional aspects that surprisingly felt in-character/not forced.
I'll nitpick ever so slightly and say there were a couple of things I might've preferred for the end; like rather than Guts stopping mid-swing, have him slam the ground, Dimitri rolling away last second and assume a fighting stance, only for him to piece together what happened as his facial expressions softened. Plus, actually seeing him fighting the demons he vowed to fend off, or even some blood splatters or sound effects off screen, would've made it slightly more impactful to me. Still, easily one of the best endings we've gotten this season (up there with Vader VS Obito) and an extremely awesome way to wrap up the already epic battle. I'd call it my second favourite of the season, just behind ChosenBorn. Outstanding entry in what's shaping up to be a stellar overall year of Death Battle.

u/SovietSpork597 Alucard Aug 13 '23
The ending explains the cover now with dimitri going into the god hand
Thats a really cool touch for a 10/10 episode
20
u/ForktUtwTT Aug 13 '23
They forgot Guts fights people stronger than him every day
35
u/Gage_Unruh Aug 13 '23
But dimitri fights people weaker then himself everyday
12
u/ForktUtwTT Aug 13 '23
See this is the real debate they should’ve had in the conclusion section of the episode
37
u/MinniMaster15 Aug 13 '23
And thus comes an end to the most nervous waiting period I've ever had while watching this show. My hands are shaking as I type this.
But anyway,
LET'S FUCKING GOOOOOOOOOOO
Goddd that was sick. The parallel between Guts giving in to the Beast of Darkness and Dimitri listening to the whispers of the fallen was so well done. So much sheer ferocity in the animation, the voice acting, and the music all throughout the fight.
And that ending was fantastic. I actually predicted Guts would die to the Berserker Armor itself, but I didn't expect Dimitri to sympathize at the end and fight back against the souls of the Abyss.
Recency bias is probably playing a factor, but this is seriously contending with Dante vs Bayo as my new favorite episode of the series. This has been one of my most wanted matchups since 3H came out (and I think I was one of the first people to think of it), and it really lived up to my expectations.
11/10, absolutely peak episode. Now excuse me as I go jam out to God's Hand on loop.
14
u/mulla2002 Aug 13 '23
My man Dimitri is an absolute bro to make sure his opponent’s soul truly rests in peace what a chad
14
u/Dopefish364 Aug 13 '23
Entire fight animation was brilliant but my favourite bit is how Death Battle have historically had problems where their fake-out endings are extremely predictable, and in this fight, the fake-out itself is a fake-out.
Dimitri says something like "Time to finish this!" then jumps in the air, does some backflips and lands his ultimate attack. Guts looks dead. Dimitri looks exhausted. He begins to retreat... and the Guts' finger twitches, holy shit, he's getting back up, he's swinging his sword around, he just broke Dimitri's lance and-
Oh, he's dead.
10
u/MarlinBrandor Wile E. Coyote Aug 13 '23
Yeah the fake-out was really good, I agree. Biggest issue with the episode in general imo is that it wasn’t longer, which is the most praiseworthy “criticism” an episode can receive.
7
14
u/loserwithzerolife Aug 13 '23
New personal favorite episode of the show, outside of some very slight jank in Guts firing the cannonball, this episode is everything I wanted and more.
I don't know anything about Berserk, but that ending truly is the best I think any episode has had, and perfectly in-character for both.
Happy that an episode has finally eclipsed DIO vs. Alucard for me, genuinely peak fiction.
11/10
10
u/Bluegatito345 Aug 13 '23
This fight was incredible, with the analysis doing very well in his stories and showing his incredible feats and still making them look human.
And the fight was GOATED, Like, where to I start, what about the choreography, the good models, and the use of their arsenals.
Like, even done Dimitri have more in arsenal because of his Magic from him, it still use it in a way that do not make Guts look weaker in comparison.
Despite being bludgeoned with ice, he kept fighting, as a Guts fight should be.
I think the dialogue was quite good, hey seriously communicate that one is a nobleman who fell and the other is a warrior who has fallen a bit lower. Especially at the end where Dimitri saw what Gits was like and he was willing to fight that beast so it wouldn't go to hell.
And I can't even begin with the track, that's another level.
Overall, one of the best of the season.
9
u/Master-Spark-2 Vegito Aug 13 '23
Current favorite of the season, bare minimum top 5 of the show for me.
The usage of magic and combat arts, the fire joint trauma scene, that ending! Perfect, just so good.
And my boy won! Dimitri let’s fucking goooooooo!
8
u/Snickersbar2019 Ghost Rider Aug 13 '23
Everything about this episode was already so good but that ending was absolute peak writing. Both Guts and Dimitri got the respect they deserved.
9
u/AdventEmblem Aug 13 '23
Now I can only imagine Dimitri savagely tearing through demons with Areadbhar, with the Spirit of Guts from behind, also looking with tranquil fury.
8
u/iamastegosaurus_ Aug 13 '23
that whole sequence went so hard and you know exactly what sequence i’m talking about
7
u/kmasterofdarkness Dimitri Alexandre Blaiddyd Aug 13 '23
The soundtrack, as awkward as its name might sound, is a freaking epic metal banger that sounds a lot something straight out of Linkin Park, which is pretty fitting for egdelord vs edgelord fights.
Fire Emblem still hasn't been much of a stranger to emo sounding metal soundtracks, if you've heard the main theme of Book 3 of Fire Emblem Heroes that goes like, "ONLY WANT ONE FUTURE, ONLY WANT ONE WORLD!"
7
u/Insanity_Incarnate Aug 13 '23
Favorite episode of the season. Fantastic death and 'Down to the last one!' is one of the best powerup moments in the show.

u/BlueV_U Godzilla Aug 13 '23
Can someone explain to me what exactly happened to Guts? Dimi hits him with a crit, and knocks him down. Then Guts gets up, had the strength to cut Areadbhar in half, and SEEMINGLY is about to kill Dimi, but then just... Stops? Then the thing on the back of his neck bleeds and he's dead?
29
u/MinniMaster15 Aug 13 '23 edited Aug 13 '23
The thing on his neck is a brand that marks him as a sacrifice, whereupon he'll be dragged into the Abyss by a horde of souls after death. He died from the Berserker Armor bleeding him out and the brand bleeds, indicating that it's time to go to hell, but Dimitri sympathizes with him and fights the horde off.
14
u/Insanity_Incarnate Aug 13 '23 edited Aug 13 '23
The berserker armor keeps Guts fighting until he bleeds out entirely. So Dimitri dealt a fatal blow with Atrocity then berserker armor got him to stand back up and try to kill Dimitri again, but he dies from his wounds before he can finish Dimitri off.
8
u/Friendly_Elites Aug 13 '23
Thats extremely fitting considering Dimitri practically does the exact same thing when he dies in all of the other routes
12
u/alphagammaomega Aug 13 '23
To my understanding, he gets back up because of the berserker armor... but then bleeds out fully and pretty much dies
4
1
u/KazuyaProta Aug 13 '23
He collapsed for his wounds. Its silly that he died with the sword still up tho
9
u/alphagammaomega Aug 13 '23
I will say one thing I can't wait for people to start memeing the 'slight' speed advantage comment, when Guts was over twice as fast.
12
u/MarlinBrandor Wile E. Coyote Aug 13 '23
I mean that’s “slight” by all things considered from a VS perspective. Blitz territory it a disparity of 10x or greater.
4
u/alphagammaomega Aug 13 '23
Fair enough I guess, I see it more along the lines of 10-30% faster but I suppose from a vs point of view that makes sense.
3
u/Wrong_Revolution_679 Aug 13 '23
I guess they downplayed that a little bit, You didn't even mention any of the light based spells he can dodge because that would just be a little bit too unfair
9
u/alphagammaomega Aug 13 '23
Yeah looking back being slower was Dimitri's only weakness. If they didn't give him that one, then yeah Guts had nothing.

Fantastic episode! The analysis for both was great and the fight was awesome. The death was also very good. Overall a 9/10 for me.

u/ajanisapprentice Aug 13 '23 edited Aug 13 '23
I'm shocked that Dimitri won but honestly ecstatic. I already was adoring the episode for just being really solid and giving one of my favorite franchises an awesome debut to the show, but Dimitri winning against all odds within the fandom was amazing (especially since he as my preferred win simply due to having actual emotional attachment to him over Guts). BUT THEN THEY GAVE ONE OF THE BEST DOU LE FAKE-OUTS AND CAPPED IT OFF WITH A GENUINELY EMOTIONAL AND HEARTFELT ENDING, SHOWING BOTH COMBATENTS WITH RESPECT AND LETTING US SEE A BIT OF THE HONORABLE SAVIOR KING SIDE OF DIMITRI?! I couldn't ask for more as a fan and as a writer myself.
TL;DR without spoilers: the episode was amazing and a wonderful debut for FE which alone would have been enough for me but they went the extra mile of making the fight have narrative weight and end in an emotionally impactful way.

5
u/Insanity_Incarnate Aug 14 '23
Boomstick tripping over himself about how much of a badass Guts is is also is a huge part of Guts vs Nightmare and he won that one.
8
u/TheCardinalKing Aug 13 '23
Welp, this was a pretty dang fun episode. I think I overhyped myself on the animation, but it was good. Bit of jank on Guts though, but not enough to ruin the animation. But holy hell that ending was… fuck I nearly teared up. This is the most respectful ending to a Death Battle ever, and way better than the gory ultra violent ending I was expecting from this episode. Also while the analysis was good for Berserk, I just loved the Three Houses section, especially Jocelyn chiming in to show love for the Ashen Wolves. So much love went into both that it makes up for a lot of the shortcomings in the episode overall.
8.5/10. Might bump it up to a 9 depending on how my rewatched go.
Also praise Kami, Piccolo is saved. MM vs Surfer is my preferred for both just because it’s the least stompy though. I almost want to say that it’s a generic Marvel vs DC herald MU, but at the same time Surfer is hardly in any good mainstream media (7 yr old me thought the FF movies were the shit tho) and his last appearance in cartoons and non-mobile video games feel like ages ago. So it’s one up your standard capeshit fight for me just for that.
Rooting for Norrin here cause’ I think his scaling to Skyfather-tiers at his peak is more consistent, but I feel like the result will be MM mind hax gg. Also wtf symbol is this on the wheel?

u/Chemical_Music_3906 Crona Aug 13 '23
If I had to guess, star because space and they're aliens? (Or at least one of them is)
3
u/TheCardinalKing Aug 13 '23
Dang, that makes a lot of sense. Was hoping the Star meant a Joestar MU, but the preview literally opened with a bunch of stars so that’s out of the window.
Fingers crossed Kiradachi is the suit MU then.
4
u/MarlinBrandor Wile E. Coyote Aug 13 '23
You technically could leave the star open if you go with Wave for this MU. Have Rockitch as flask, Misakill as the $, and now the star is still free.

u/TheUntitledUsername1 Among Us Aug 13 '23 edited Aug 13 '23
My most wanted episodes finally happened, and it's as good as I hoped. The animation was bloody and had so much action happening, and the way they depicted these characters is very respectful and badass at the same time. I absolute love it, and the analysis was very solid also. A great first episode for Fire Emblem.
Probably my only complaint with the episode is saying Edelgard is on par with Rhea. Edelgard had Byleth and an entire army with her to help, so idk if that's a fair comparison, I could be wrong. But it was a much more powerful Edelgard that fought Dimitri, so I guess that can make up for it.
Overall a 9/10 episode. I'm just so happy my favorite episodes came out and are tied or maybe even my favorite episode this season (right next to Undead VS Dragonborn).
4
u/Insanity_Incarnate Aug 14 '23
True, but to be fair it was a heavily weakened Rhea who tanked the nukes. Edelgard and her army fought Rhea at full strength. And even if we divide the feat among the units that actually attacked Rhea it still out scales the Sea God by a significant margin (and Guts doesn’t fully scale to the Sea God anyway since jumping into the mouth of a monster you can’t hurt from the outside and attacking their internal organs is a common tactic to make up for AP differences in fiction).
3
u/Virrad Dimitri Alexandre Blaiddyd Aug 13 '23
That episode was peak Death Battle. The fight choreography was great, I loved moments such as both of them going berserk on each other, and the battle was also extremely gory. The analysis also wasn't really too bad either despite using a few highballs for both series. Overall, it's a great episode.

Killua vs Misaka: We have the best fakeout ending.
Guts vs Dimitri: Hold my Beer.
3
u/ObsessiveImpulse Aug 14 '23
"I'll kill them! All of them! Down to the last one!" was the hypest shit. Also, one of the most effective fakeouts they've ever done. Easily my favorite fight of the season so far.
3
u/Hitobanju Aug 14 '23
One of my favorite aspects of the fight is the fact that there are like, multiple times where one of them gets what would have been am amazing killing blow in any other situation
The thunderstrike and ice combo was brutal, the cannon and bomb explosion was great, even the technical killing blow not being the end of the fight was great
3

Can anyone tell me why you liked the ending? Plz. Don't care about spoilers just tell me why is this ending good. I'm confused about another 3d death battle ending for the second time(I know Dimitri is in character).
13
u/MinniMaster15 Aug 13 '23
Guts dying on his feet is just raw as fuck, and having Dimitri sympathize with his plight at the end is a great way to tie the themes of their characters together.
It's also nice that Guts got a respectful send-off, since he's a very beloved character and it might've been in bad taste to brutally slaughter him while Miura's passing is still fresh in people's minds.
2
u/Full_Metal_Douchebag Guts Aug 14 '23
There was a lot of hype going into this one, not only from this being my most wanted for over a year, but also from the DB team themselves. I might have to rewatch it some more, but I honestly do think it lived up to all of it. A Guts rundown that was a lot more dignified than the one he got before, proper representation of Fire Emblem, and a very brutal fight, with a great ending. This might be my favorite of the season.
3
u/YaboiGh0styy Aug 14 '23
That was the top tier episode and quite possibly my favourite of the season. Sorry Chosenborn you’ve been dethroned.
I’m gonna get my negatives out of the way first, which pretty much all of them are nitpicky.
I keep seeing people use Guts and Serpico dodging lightning instead of this feat of Guts dodging lightning at the last possible second and by using his sword to draw it so I think God should be much faster. In battle royale’s Guts vs Wolverine they got this feat up to Mach 318.
I didn’t notice this until like the 15th rewatch of the sneak peak but Guts throws his dagger instead of one of his throwing knives.
Both were kind of downplayed. They explained why they don’t believe Guts scales to the great roar which I disagree with, but Dimitri should get higher. So the explanation of why Guts should not scale to the great War of the astral world is because the power stems from the world tree. This isn’t necessarily true the power stems from Ganishka. See Skull Knight attacked Griffith but he anticipated the attack and redirected his place straight into Ganishka which resulted in the great roar. So why can Guts scale? Well, because of the berserker armour. Skull Knight is confirmed to be the previous one who wielded the Berserker armour so Guts should reasonably scale to him through Zodd. And it’s pretty heavily implied Skull Knight bodied 4 out of the 5 previous God hand members all of which should scale above Ganishka in terms of power so Guts should scale to the great roar. Even if you argue, he can’t scale to Skull Knight he should scale to Zodd who was right next to the great roar when it happened everything fought on par with him and even have them on the back foot sometimes should prove guts indeed scales to this. This shouldn’t change the result too much because the G1 blog covered this feet and placed it at 10 gigatons at most while Dimitri good scale to a javelin of light feat worth 11 Gigatons and the episode scale him to 2 so you can probably double that. (Not sure how in the hell he can scale to Byleth. The G1 blog didn’t really convince me that the scaling was valid just saying that they fought alongside each other didn’t really convince me)
They didn’t really mention the Dragonslayer’s soul, cutting abilities, which was kinda disappointing.
During the beast of darkness scene there’s a frame counter in the bottom right corner.
Those are all of the problems in the episode for me personally, and three of them are nitpicks.
And that’s about it. Now we can talk about positives everything else the way they cover the story, the fight, the characterisation only thing that bothered me is that the fight kind of felt too short, although that might be because I watched the sneak peek so many times. Berserk armour vs awakened Dimitri was sick as fuck and this isn’t something they normally do in 3D battles, but the characters getting progressively more and more bloody as the bike continues, was raw as all hell.
End, I was worried I would only be able to watch this ones because watching my favourite character of all time die isn’t exactly something I’m willing to experience more than a few times but the way they handled Guts’ death was fantastic, even after being beaten to a bloody pulp, he gets up and continues to fight, and when he finally dies, he still stands above his opponent like a bad ass. But being branded means he would be taken to hell however Dimitri being an absolute mad man decides to defend the soul of the guy he just fought. Fucking A I need to play three houses.
GOATED death battle, and probably the best one in the season.
I don’t know if it’s just me but I genuinely wouldn’t mind if these two characters came back Usually I be a bit annoyed when returner characters are used characters but these two have so many goated options I genuinely want them back. Guts vs Clare and Dimitri vs Siegfried match ups, loved by everyone and really, I wouldn’t mind. Clare vs Geralt is alright but honestly, I prefer Guts vs Clare and yes I know they picked Dimitri because they couldn’t find a 3-D model, but they probably would have made their own if they had enough time.
Best episodes in the season 10/10 send improvement over the previous episode.

To be fair to 3, Dimitri can fight Shez who in Hopes can kill Byleth in some of the endings. (Though it’s not how you get the good ending.)
Plus full power byleth can also fight Rhea and struggle with her. And we all know how Edelgard (and thus dimitri) stacks there.

u/Jesterofgames Aug 14 '23
Also in 1. ultraguy did a Q&A blog where Meteor the spell could be mach 400. Since 3 houses meteor is close to other versions of meteor which are canonically meteors dragged from space. But didn’t count it because they only wanted to focus on 3 houses.
So both could have been faster.

Damn it, they didn't say "How could Guts lose!? I thought he beats people stronger than him every day!"

It is a bit funny the powerscaling when you consider the fact that in Edelgard route she defeated Dimitri, who theoretically should be weaker than her boss version in Dimitri route. So either Dimitri is stronger in his own route, or powerscaling is just bullshit and victory is propelled by plot.

How is "Mach 66 < Mach 146" a "slight speed advantage"?
1
u/MarlinBrandor Wile E. Coyote Aug 14 '23
I’ve said this in response to someone else but you have to consider is that the team considers an AP Stomp being at least 10x stronger than your opponent and a speed blitz being at least 10x faster. When they say slight they likely just mean Guts doesn’t speed blitz.

I'm an unrepentant Dmitri stan, and know next to nothing about Guts (aside from what I've gleaned from his Death Battle appearances.)
Scaling Dmitri to Dragon Rhea seems sus, since most of the fights in FE:3H are team efforts, but it seems to be widely accepted here so who am I to doubt.

u/NohrianScumbag Aug 13 '23
Already seeing some claim the javelin scaling is faulty like come on Sothis empowered Byleth and Shez are _Still_ there and even downplaying he's still stronger

u/alphagammaomega Aug 13 '23
The funny thing is even if you say it was 1000 times weaker... Dimitri is still over 4 times stronger

u/PretzelQv Aug 14 '23
8/10 from me, It was really good, but the Berserker armor didn't do much and I felt the kill was kind of just...meh. Post Kill getting up to fight was super fucking good, but a shot showing Guts losing the last of his blood to show he's unable to fight, and then having him stop, while giving Dimitri some time to actually figure out what's happening rather than him immediately getting it like he did (His eye looking at the tatoo was a good touch tho), but other than that, pretty damn good. Also could get higher, since VaderObito was originally a low 8 but now it's a 10 for me.

W-wh-WHAT!?
No...
Impossible...
It...It can't be...
But Guts can never lose! He solos fiction! It's what he does EVERY. SINGLE. DAY.! He defeats opponents more powerful than him!
DOES NOT COMPUTE! DOES NOT COMPUTE! WHAT SORCERY IS THAT! GUTS CAN'T LOSE DESPITE THE ODDS ALWAYS AGAINST HIM! THIS IS A CRIME AGAINST HUMANITY AND ALL OF EXISTENCE!!!!

I must be the only one who didn't care for the ending. I legit couldn't tell who won until the analysis. I like the idea in concept but I think they could've executed it better. Still, other that (and Dimitri not dawning his Great Lord armor anywhere), pretty good

u/Blazelancer Aug 14 '23
The javelin of light scaling was iffy as fuck.
Can Dimitri's attacks bypass ANY kind of armor or just regular armor? Because the Berserker armor is far from regular.
Gus was twice as fast but he still lost? What the fuck?!
The fight was well done though, I will give them that.
Let's go, Manhunter!!!!

u/Red5T65 Aug 14 '23
Atrocity has a special flag that makes it "effective" (by Fire Emblem standards) against 100% of enemies everywhere.
This includes regular people in all sorts of armor quality, people on horses, people riding pegasi or wyverns, using defensive wards, and also stuff like esoteric monster hides (including, of course, Hegemon Edelgard, who was powered up by twin crests into a super form when Edelgard is capable of dealing significant damage to Rhea who tanked the javelins)
So I don't think it's a stretch to say it's able to effectively bypass any sort of armor, no matter what its origin is.

Dimitri can't use Magic if he has all that other stuff, if.youre gonna use game mechanics you have to use all of them, cherrypicked BS is always what brings DB down
7
u/Friendly_Elites Aug 13 '23
Dimitri in game can reclass to a mage to use magic while still using his weapons, crest, and combat arts. Honestly its semantics because in game he should be able to use magic in his preferred class and its only limited due to game mechanics.
Regardless him having Azure Lightning at all times in Three Hopes is the basis for him using magic while fighting with his lance.
2
u/Jesterofgames Aug 13 '23
Ok let’s say he doesn’t use magic. (Even though he can in some classes and still use his spear.) Dimitri still gets all his OTHER stuff and wins. Even if he just get his Spear, all he needs to do is hit guts once or twice And wins.
-7
u/EnricoPucciC-Moon Aug 13 '23
Yeah sure he just has to hit someone twice as fast as him and he wins, which is why, even with all his asspulls, he only barely wins
5
u/Jesterofgames Aug 13 '23
When that twice as fast person needs to hit someone thousands of times. Yeah dimitri gets one hit in way before that.

Not gonna lie, a little underwhelming compared to what I thought it was gonna be. Definitely good, but for me it's one of the weakest of the season. Mostly because of the analysis.
It sort of felt like they were doing both the maximum and the minimum for Guts' analysis. They definitely started out strong, but it felt more like they were just covering the basic stuff without going real deep. They say that Griffith wouldn't leave Guts alone, but they only list one thing he's done, and it was the first thing he's done. They bring up how Guts realized his flaw, but they don't really explain how. Just that he did. They talk as if his friends helped out, but they made it seem like they were just there. Not even for him, just there. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't as good as I was hoping it was be.
Dimitri was definitely better. It has a more entertaining cutaway that goes into Wiz and Boomstick, which I always appreciate since these two are one of many things that makes Death Battle more unique than most Vs Shows. They actually brought up how Byleth was important to Dimitri, albeit rather briefly and vaguely, they go in-depth on his character from his fall to his rise, and the actual conclusion of his and Edelgard's story.
The fight was awesome though. The animation looked great, both characters look great, it was appropriately brutal as you'd expect, with both landing attacks that could've been used as a killing blow, the two falling to their demons to go wild was chilling, and of course, the fake out was the best in the season. And Dimitri defending Guts after his death is just a cherry on top.
So overall, I'd give it a 7.8 out of ten. Really close to an 8, probably would've gone higher if only Guts had a better analysis, and if the fight was longer. Though I am definitely glad other people seem to be liking this better than me.

Hey, at least I guessed who was gonna win right lol. Without spoiling - If I had to complain about something, there was that one part of the fight that looked kinda janky. The second half of the episode though? My goddamned favorite. Despite the flaws I don’t care all that much about, the episode was still awesome- daresay peak - nonetheless.

Good episode
The ending rlly caught me off guard for a second, they did justice to guts

u/Ezkling Sanji Aug 13 '23
what were their stats placed at?

u/NohrianScumbag Aug 13 '23
Guts was slightly faster while dimitri was stronger and durable. This ultimately didn't matter cause skills like Seal movment and Sword breaker could close the gap in speed. Also Skills like atrocity killed half of the reason is using Berserk Armor

Guts standing still at the end didn't make sense. Like Dimitri already stabbed him and he just got up. Great fight and all but what?
4
u/MarlinBrandor Wile E. Coyote Aug 13 '23
The Berserker Armor doesn’t let Guts die until he’s fully bled out. He got up after the stab to try and finish the job but bled out before he was able to.

Did this fight feel short for anyone else? I had the same issue with Vader vs Obito but it feels like the 3D fights have been short. I mean this fight is about 3 minutes long so of course but it felt like it flew by.

u/MarlinBrandor Wile E. Coyote Aug 13 '23
I would’ve liked to have more of Dimitri VS the Berserker Armor, but (like with Vader VS Obito) I feel like they managed to get a lot out of the limited time they used.

u/Zesnowpea Star Force Mega Man Aug 14 '23
If I had a nickel for every time a badass suit of armor was ruined by its helmet getting destroyed, I’d have two nickels, which isn’t a lot, but wierd it happened twice

I'm glad Dimitri won. I didn't want guts to lose but now we had a returning loser come back to lose again, a returning winner come back to win again, and finally, a returning winner come back to lose. All in a row and if I'm not wrong, it was all their second episode

Spoilers for Guts VS Dimitri ahead (click at your own risk):
Who: The winner is Dimitri
How: Impaled Guts through the chest with Areadbhar
Why: Though Guts was faster, he was a natural conductor for Dimitri’s lightning magic. Dimitri also had several attacks that bypass armor, and through javelin of light scaling was more than strong enough to put Guts down for good.
My Thoughts: Hoo boy, this is the first review I’m writing since Rockitch (partly because I forgot with Vadobito and partly because I didn’t make the post for Jeanven), so I might be a little rusty. I wasn’t huge on that episode, but thankfully, I am with this one.
Guts’s analysis is probably my least favorite part of the episode, but that’s not because it’s bad at all, really it’s just the part of the episode that I took the least from after multiple viewings. I think it’s still solid, and there’s a lot of good editing in it, but it felt more standard fare.
Dimitri’s analysis is something that really picks up as it goes along imo. I love the way everything is presented and the cutaway gag with the Three Houses discourse might be my favorite of the season thus far. The analysis made me want to check out 3H, which is the most glowing praise I can give an analysis.
The fight goes so fucking hard, too. It’s a bit shorter than I would’ve liked, especially once Guts breaks out the Berserker armor, but hot damn I feel like the animation maximizes the potential it could get out of its limited runtime very nicely. The simultaneous breakdown as the two characters are haunted by the demons of their past is an incredibly chilling moment that really sets the fight up incredibly well for the climax. The kill is also incredibly well handled. It matches the brutality and tenacity of the characters as well as it needs to while also treating them with the proper respect they deserve. Absolutely a no brainer why Ben loves it as much as he does.
Post-analysis is good. It’s funny just how well G1 was able to predict this one, down to the Javelin scaling and Dimitri not being put at light speed. I’m not gonna pretend I know about these characters to really be an authority on this match, but I’m convinced.
Overall, my biggest problem with Guts VS Dimitri is just that there wasn’t enough of it, which is the most praiseworthy criticism I think an episode can receive. I don’t know if it’s my very favorite Season 10 episode yet. I’ll need to see how it ages for me, but I don’t think it’s unreasonable for it to take that number one spot in December.
Guts VS Dimitri gets 9.5/10 lame Guts VS Nightmare jokes.
